First of all, i have to confess, i didnt look in the file yet.
I think the great problem of this concept is, it can cover only a snapshot of religions history, which could be a bit unsatisfying in an epic game. Two thousand years ago christianity and islam were not even thought of and the world was mostly populated by polytheistic religions. Should they ALL be represented by ONE flavor?
And to pick up this China-and-Communism-thing: As mentioned before China is communist only "a few turns" and even now there are many followers of different chinese religions and buddism.
And another point: You have Judaism in your list. Of course, it is a important religion - nowadays and in history - but, beside there are only about 15 mio jews, there is only one country which is mainly jewish and this takes no part in civ3 (if i didnt forgot it), so which country in civ is famously know for judaism?
My conclusion: I think, it is a good idea to use flavors for religions. But i fear in an epic game it would be insufficient. When my legions crush carthaginians i dont want any christians around (i think you know what i mean). Which leads to another question: are the romans famous for polytheism, because they were when they build up the empire or are they famous for christianity, for rome beeing the first state to adopt it?
So ill vote "UUUHHHH..." for now (!!), but perhaps do you have some ideas to diversify and change my mind
