J...this 'carve pieces off' idea sounds interesting. Given that pretty much all of the involved factions are basically 'balanced forces' how do you think the Republicans can perform this carving without the whole thing blowing up?
For example, you suggest the mandate as a first thing to go, but without the mandate the vast majority of the package becomes basically meaningless since it is fundamentally a giant 'group rate' scheme based on 300 million participants. Without the mandate to produce the size of the group the medical insurance industry has no incentive to cooperate in any aspect, and probably wouldn't. They would also very rightly feel that they had been screwed out of everything they have thus far put in, and demand compensation.
Seems to me like this 'cut a piece here and a piece there scheme that you say 'may eventually produce a workable plan' is far more likely to produce a complete collapse...and far sooner than 'eventually'.
