I'm finishing another game with the Byzantines, and inspired by those discussions about the Papal States I decided to see what would become of my Byzantines if I took Rome. I went to the WB and put myself and the Pope at war. Everything went right, I took Rome easily and nothing weird happened. There were no crusades because Jerusalem never left my christian hands, so I couldn't see if this mechanic went on after the conquest or not.
But what I want to know has nothing to do with this. I'm a massive Byzantine Empire, some turns before the Ottomans (which I will crush just as they spawn), with the following territories: All of Anatolia, Mid East, North Africa up to Algeria, Italy, Most of France, all provinces from Verona to Thessaly with Budapest, Belgrad and Hadrianopolis making my outer borders (barbs destroyed preslav) and the isles: Crete, Rhodes, Sicily, Cyprus, Corsica and Sardinia.
My question is: Is there an increased penalty in Stability after getting a big number of cities or territory? Or is the Krak de Chevaliers bugged? After I conquered Lutetia Parisiorum (nice to see this name for the first time in this game) I gained the Krak wonder, so all my cities come with walls and castle, but it seems now that my expansion will break, as I lose lots of points and I can't get enough more to keep the balance (getting Pamplona cost me 5 stability points, with a Castle and Militarism). Since it was possible, I changed to Militarism, and kept my civics this way: Feudal Monarchy, Feudal Law, Serfdom, Manorialism, State Religion and Militarism. (Of course I could get the Public Works tech to boost my stability a lot, but that's impossible with a 100 years remaining going 3y/turn or 2y/turn and a massive empire technologically stagnated and wanting to get even bigger)
