wow, it's getting a very long game...

...so, no chance of a German strategy guide? :p
No. But I may play them again, game after next. If I do, I'll make a strat guide.
But really, my strategy is very imperfect... It's basically that I just try and get large and improve my cities as much as possible. And I kinda failed on the latter, only the original German/Austrian core is well-developed, even my earliest conquests - France and the Netherlands - are working hardly-improved terrain... Heck, I even have some railroaded forests around the capital that could easily be more useful if cut down and replaced by mines!

Hey, Rhey, you got my mind turned on about the Celts... :)
Only if they could QUICKLY settle the British Island and be FORCED to go to the mainland (and NOT real Scandinavia, that is!)
... maybe they could have 5-6 good cities...

Hm, 2 settlers at start for them? Is that too much unorthodoxy? :)

You should place them in Ireland. And change completely their city list - removing the Gaulish cities and adding the northern ones.
I would remove zulus then. Block the passage of ethoipians to south africa with jungles and plateaus - and put some barbs in the south.

Celts - Ireland

Problem is that it is of 2 tiles, Ireland. So poor capital city would not have much productivity... But if I give the Celts two settlers at start, with a ship...

(calm me down, I will have no problem to add the Celts in the editor on the Civilization sub-menu, will I?)

Question: how can I "edit" the time scale? Now I think history goes too slow (on emperor level), at AD 500 civs are around 2/3 of ancient age - should I give the game more turns?

Ireland isn't a problem if you add some hidden resource.

The problem is...I just saw that you erased useless civs instead of deactivating them.
This means that if you add a civ, you'll have to manually make EVERY unit available to that civ. Enjoy :)

Uhh, I did not know about deactivating civs...
But I hope it doesn't mean I have to do anything that cannot be done in the editor! I do not want to deal with files and folders...

As long as I have to click a few hundred times to check every unit, well, a can do that... will I have gallic swordsman? Maybe not, since you, Rhye did not have it...

Uhh, that hidden resource - tell me more about it...
For me it means that resource that should appear only when the gicen advance is reached (to me it does not sound as a help for Ireland)

I guess "hidden" does not mean the bottom of the Irish Sea :)

Anyway, I will see - tomorrow morning...
(when I will have the time for this)

I finally finished my game as Germany on the RoX beta!
The United Socialist States of Europe reign victorious, of course.
I'm gonna play until 2050 just to see how far I can get with my war on the superpower Spain. Attached is a screenie of the victory.
If anyone wants, I can attach a save made right before I ended my last turn before victory. I don't know what version of the mod you'd need to open it, since the game is on the RoX beta.

Congratulations, Blas! I just finished my own game. I finally succeeded with a domination victory on emperor-level. The communist empire of Byzant now covers 25% of the world, and holds more than 50% of the world population. I found the religious (monuments) and the commercial (reduced corruption) traits to be just the right combination for such an endeavour - of course, the Temple of Artemis was also very helpful.

This is what 25% of the landmass in RoCX looks like. I played all the way through with the newest version.

Edit: Stupid WLAN causing double post.

->Any chance of a Byzantine stategy guide, TC?

->Soma: I removed the Gallic swordsman: in case you add the celts you should add it back. And you should update all the units' "available to" list where necessary with the 12th civ.

If you are a warmonger, you should consider the Byzantines - and if you consider the Byzantines, you should prepare for war.
You will find yourself surrounded by the Ottomans, the Greeks, the Romans, and the Austrians, and you should not be surprised, nor alarmed, if you only manage to build two (or even one) more cities. Just make sure, that you secure the iron resource to the north-west.
As always, you should begin by making contacts, trading, and acquiring goody huts, but you should also quickly prepare for war. The Greeks are an obvious choice for your first conquest. The Dromon seems perfect for bombarding the Greek (and later the Roman) cities, but remember that you then, first must deal with the barbarian galleys.

After the Greeks, you might be tempted to go south for some easy conquests (The Ottomans, The Babylonians, and the Israelites), but this may not be advisable. Firstly, you would have to fight through mountains, hills, and deserts. Secondly, you would conquer moutains, hills, and deserts, and thirdly, you will easily find your army between the Persians and the Arabs.
Furthermore, your capital is the perfect bottleneck against southern aggresion. Keep it well defended, and invaders will be forced to go through the Caucasus or even east of the Caspian Sea.

The real threat will come from Europe, and you should therefore move your border to the north - Austria. Conquering Vienna will give you a great potential industrial power house. Besides an abundance of food and shields, it will later be able to build the Iron Works. Consider Vienna as a place for your Forbidden Palace.
After Austria, your empire will border with Rome, France, Germany, and Russia - a delicate situation. Make sure to make the right friends, as well as enemies.

If you desire to continue your conquests, the Temple of Artemis will be very useful to you, and depending on your war tactics, so will the Statue of Zeus. The Byzantine traits will also come in handy here: Religious gives you monuments, and Commercial makes it easier to manage a large corrupt empire. Finally, the Cataphract is the better of the Byzantines unique units. The extra defence point is handy on the battlefield and you can count on it for fast attacks. But it is far too valuable to be used defending the conquered cities.

A last note. If you wish to be a colonial power, notice that your core is located deep in the Mediterranian. This means that, because of the long coast line, the new naval system will be against you. In defending your colonies, your troops will be delayed, and an easy prey to the European navies. So try to secure a blue water harbour with good infrastructure to your core.

Strength: 3.5/5 - Byzantium has the potential of becoming a great empire. But failing that will see the Byzantines in constant war with the European powers.

Soma - FWIW, i quite liked your original selection of 11 civs. it didnt have all my favs (and the celts would certainly qualify!), but i thought it was good, objective choices to fit the map.

Hehe... I just finished conquering/destroying all of the Spanish cities in Europe and some of the Middle Eastern and Asian ones...
It's hillarious what a dogpile including all of the pissed-off world powers can do to an empire... Once the English declared and nuked the Spanish in four different places, it was almost too easy to conquer what was left of Izzy's empire. Her capital is now Zimbabwe. Her northernmost city is I think a small ex-Persian city in Iran, and then after that the farthest north she has is central Sudan. :mischief:

EDIT: Oh, I forgot that city in Mongolia... It'll be mine next turn anyway, so it's quite irrelevant. And it turns out I already destroyed that Iranian city. Things can get confusing when you're conquering this fast.

Could either (or both :))of you post saves for your games?

I did ok with the Spanish, conquered all of Europe and north africa by 2050 but didnt actually win except by score. Would be interesting to see how you have your cities producing, how many workers you use etc ?

I can post my saves (right before victory, and current) from the Germany game, but it's on the RoX beta so you may need to have the RoX beta installed to open them...

Here is my save - just before domination victory. I got a city through cultural conversion between this turn and the next. Maybe it is necessary for victory.

V.Soma, I'm going to be away for quite awhile. I'm in a doctoral program. This is crunch time on my dissertation, and my committee wants to meet twice a week to go over my progress, so I can defend my proposal in early March, then finish my research by July. Sorry to jump ship suddenly on the 80x80 map, but graduating will have to come first in this case. I'm attaching a copy of the little progress I made, before demands became too tight.

Rhye, I would be willing to right a guide for Rome. Is there a RoC guide for it I can build off of or should I start fresh?

Wow, good job Three Crowns (not clowns ;)). The best I ever got was 22% in an England game, but I got too bored and just built a spaceship.
