Rhye's of Europe Civ Discussion Thread

Since RFC has reached it's final patch, it may be time to see if there are any changes that are worth to be copied. IIRC, RFCE is based on RFC 1.181, and lots of things have changed. Squatting for example has been removed, some terrain changes, and the new Dutch colours are examples I can think of now, although the last one isn't so important for RFCE because the chance that these civs become neighbours is none.

You are correct that we're based on 1.181. The code has diverged enough that only important/easy changes are likely to make the jump. I guess squatting should be one. What are the "some terrain changes" you speak of?

It's merely textures that have changed: all of them look slightly different. Water tiles are the most noticable. I'll see if I can find the thread where the differences are shown.

EDIT: it appears that there are no clear pictures on that in the 1.182 changelog thread, nor in the preview thread.

Hi, just wondering when we can expect the next beta version? :)

Good question... I haven't played since the Dutch problem... I know that was fixed, but was it published?

Hi, just wondering when we can expect the next beta version?

Ah... good question. Real life has been and will continue to be a bit busy. Many thanks to merijnv1 and micbic for continuing to plug away at things. So far we have:

  1. New Polish UHV/UP
  2. New French UHVs
  3. Improved Dutch spawn
  4. Fixed Germany die-on-spawn
  5. Lots of little improvements to art/text
  6. Random small bug fixes

These are valuable improvements, but a bit meager for a new release IMHO. Apart from the fixes to Germany/Netherlands there isn't much that alters balance -- people can still discuss and test new UHVs on the current version.

I guess I'd like to get around to refining/improving the buildings and implement at least one more set of improved UHVs (Venice, perhaps) before calling it Beta 2. I think a release around the end of June of beginning of July is likely. That will be approximately two months from Beta 1.

What's the new Polish UP?

EDIT: Also, don't you want to update the LHs?
I noticed that the leader art is not the best availeable in many cases...

I planned to change the names of the folder (like art) soon. (I expect from thursdays) It is what I tried earlier, but went wrong. This makes it easier (at least for me) to code. It's also less confusing.

While playing a game as the Cordobans, I couldn't help but noticing that when the Arabs were not Muslim (they hadn't converted yet), they were called the Abbasid Empire of Arabia (or something along those lines), but then when they converted to Islam, their name reverted to being called Arab Caliphate.

I've decided to make a 'chart' to tell you with my ideas on changing this:

Arabs

Not Muslim: Arabian Empire

Muslim (before Cordobans spawn): Ummayad Caliphate

Muslim (after Cordobans spawn): Abbasid Caliphate

Optional:
When they respawn: Fatimid/Mamluk Caliphate
Jeruslam is taken: Ayyubid Caliphate

Hello everyone! I haven't written for long, nice job has been done here. :) About the Polish-Hungarian UHV thing: what about letting Poland have the UHV of the territorial one (also that sea-to-sea idea is great), and in the case of Hungary somehow represent the conquest of Wien and parts of Bohemia by Mathias Corvinus? With like: Conquer Wien by 1490. Or something like that. Or another idea: somehow representing the very long struggles against Venice with conquer Venice by the year of XXXX? It could be the one that were actually couldn't be achived during history. What do you all think?

EDIT: About Hungarian-Poland conflict: In fact there was some colliding about the vassallity of Moldova for example, or in the case of Halicz (I hope it's correct that way), which were both in the interests of Hungary and Poland, too. So what about making this area a place of expanding. (if the main idea is as I learnt that Poland should expand in the direction of somehow Hungary)

Jesus, five pages discussing one civ.

BTW why is Casimir always at war? (he is the polish leader, right?) In my games, he has been at war with Germany, England and Arabia at different times.

Even if you probably know that, I think it could be better to change the English Leader's music, which currently is the french national anthem. As the French and the English were often at war in the medieval age, it may sound strange for french players like me. ^^

Congratulations for your work on this amazing mod ! ;)

If Kievian Rus' lasts, Would there be a name change to the empire if it becomes large enough?

So what's going on? It seems pretty dead around here....

1.You should put the Norse civilization in Norway, Iceland, Sweden and Finland (if you haven't)

2. Remove "Protestant Christianity" as a favored religion, since protestantism came in the 15-16th century, and norse is the name of the scandinavians before Christianity came to the northern scandinavia.

3. Let Sweden, Denmark, Russia and Kievan Rus spawn in viking-occupied scandinavia and Russia (since they founded towns and cities in russia too.

4. Make Denmark a civilization as "Kingdom of Denmark", since Denmark was one of the first scandinavian countries that stopped with the pillaging, and became a monarchy, and let them spawn in the 11-12 century.

5. Make a crusade/jihad project.

6. I can't play it because of administrive rights, but I think you made a good job :)

Re: Poland/lithuania; Jagiellon, etc. This might take a lot of work, but is there any way to make unions? Say, if you are Poland, and you do something, something like titles, maybe spread Catholicism to all Lithuanian Cities? Then you do get to join? Maybe permanent, maybe not? Or like a permanent alliance, but with more power over their policies and not permanent? A higher threshold than alliance, but realistic with some pairs? And a higher percentage change of them breaking away at scripted times?

This could play kind of like the beginning of France's game. In France's (and Norse's) case, you settle in places that will eventually rebel, but get benefit of it while they are part of your empire. Likewise, with Poland-Lithuania, if you do X, Lithuania will become part of your empire (and retain a second capital?) This is a really big part of European history, so I think it should be worked in if possible?

This could work ahistorically, of course, but also Austria/Germany; Austria/Hungary: IFAIK vassalization doesn't really cover it - they were both ruled from Vienna/Prague, and therefore should both be ruled by the player (Absinthe will tell me I'm wrong, surely, but...); France/Burgandy; Spain/Portugal, etc.

Just an idea; no idea how hard it would be to create.

1.You should put the Norse civilization in Norway, Iceland, Sweden and Finland (if you haven't)

Why? It's up to you to colonize those areas. If we put preplaced cities there, the game would be too deterministic.

2. Remove "Protestant Christianity" as a favored religion, since protestantism came in the 15-16th century, and norse is the name of the scandinavians before Christianity came to the northern scandinavia.

This will let the protestant civs less likely to switch back to catholicism after the reformation. And before Protestantism is "spawn", they are very likely to be catholic.

3. Let Sweden, Denmark, Russia and Kievan Rus spawn in viking-occupied scandinavia and Russia (since they founded towns and cities in russia too.

Same answer as point 1.

4. Make Denmark a civilization as "Kingdom of Denmark", since Denmark was one of the first scandinavian countries that stopped with the pillaging, and became a monarchy, and let them spawn in the 11-12 century.

Ever heard of Dynamic names? The Norse will probably be called "Kingdom of Denmark" for a long time.

5. Make a crusade/jihad project.

I start to believe you didn't play a single game. We already have this implented.

6. I can't play it because of administrive rights, but I think you made a good job :)

That's sad.

It would be cool if you would include the Northern Crusades. :mischief: After all, you already have the Teutonic Order. And well, they didn't have much impact on the original Crusades, but they were a mayor force in the Northern Crusades in 12st and 13th century.
A brief history lesson, if I may.
For several centuries the Christians had suffered because of raids by the pagan peoples from Baltic. In the end of 12th century, the Pope called for a crusade against those savages. The crusaders landed at the mouth of Daugava river, establishing a beach-head and a castle in modern Riga. To facilitate the conquering, Livonian Order was founded. By 1210s, the Livonians had been subdued and the Crusaders moved on to conquer Estonia in the north and Latgalia to the south. These areas were conquered by 1220s (though Saaremaa with it's Viking traditions held their freedom until 1261). At the same time, the Danish and Swedes tried to grab their pieces too.
As a result, modern Estonia and Latvia were divided for centuries between Teutonic Order, Livonian Order, the Swedes and the Danish.
At the same time, the Prussians were also conquered.

Now, how to implement that in to the game?
I would suggest adding Estonia, Livonia, Lithuania, Suvalkija, Pomerania to German war-maps. Estonia and Livonia could be added to Swedish and Norse war-maps too. But there isn't anything to conquer? I think it would be cool to create a strong Barbarian/Independent city somewhere in Estonia (Saarema would be historically accurate and would encourage raids on boats to Scandinavia - the Eastern Vikings did burn the royal city of Sigtuna near modern Stockholm in 1187).
Why Germany? The Teutonic Order had it's roots in Germany and the German people formed Estonia's high society and ruling elite from 13th century up to 20th century under all the different rules of Livonian Order, Poland, Sweden and Russia... I consider this fact to be so important that it should be added to German UHV conditions - maybe a separate UHV condition called Northern Crusade. It would encourage building a huge army, as suggested by current UHV conditions.
Actually, I suggest changing the German UHV conditions to following: 1. Northern Crusade (conquer or vassalize Estonia, Livonia, Lithuania, Suvalkija) 2. Unity of Empire (conquer or vassalize all the area controlled by the historically decentralized Holy Roman Empire in 1650; e.g: Lorraine, Swabia, Saxony, Bavaria, Brandenburg, Bohemia, Franconia, Tyrol, Pomerania, Poland, Carinthia, Salzburg, Austria, Moravia, Silesia, Lombardy, Tuscany) 3. The Reformation (be the first to discover Printing Press). Imagine the challenge: a warmonger AND scientifically advanced Germany.
1648 was the Peace of Westphalia ending the Thirty Year's War, being a suitable landmark for HRE. Now the time-frame for Northern Crusades is more difficult: most of the areas was conquered by 1230, but the tribes in modern Latvia (the Semigallians) held against invasions until 1290...

So, what do you guys think?
