RifE 1.20 Bug Thread

Why not just give every civ another two warriors?

The first two builds almost need to be warriors, so it's really just a fast forward to when you can start building something else. Also two warriors will reduce randomness more than a defence boost for palaces and it will have no long term effects.

Mostly because that allows early rushers a larger advantage... Aggressive leaders would have a much earlier shot at taking you out.

Well, though that's true for MP, I don't see that being too big of a problem for SP. The AI needs to be at a certain difficulty level to be any danger at all in the beginning of a game, but at that difficulty level, they spawn with something like 4 warriors and 2 scouts, while the player still only starts with 1 warrior and 1 scout. True, this makes early rushin slightly easier for that one single player, but I've never had too big a problem with giving the player a slighy advantage in some cases. After all - the AI can't have fun, but the human player should.

Yeah, I had a very interesting game go to about turn 400ish then some event or something made it unstable and it would start getting CTD's. I would keep reloading back a few turns and it would allow me to progress a bit farther each time, but eventually would CTD. I would love to figure out what it is....the game was completely stable up until that point.
I was getting CTDs all the time but my current game I selected the custom option "restrict random civs" and turned off both Scions and Jotnar, and it's been CTD-free so far (fingers crossed).

Lizardman Shaper not getting free Hardy 1.

Would they?

The ratio of warriors would remain the same and remember that any target of a rush will have more time to build defenders, they will be fortified and have other defence bonuses. Not to mention that any rusher must first find them and trek through the wilderness.

If you suggest that the rushers should take the time to get some extra experience, that will dramatically increase the odds that they will disobey the standing order not to feed the bears.

If anything it will weaken rushes. I considered suggesting giving Doviello an extra Slave to compensate for the relative weakening of Lucian.

What does the spell Clear Swamp do?

Any word on why Elohim cant make mage guilds or dont have their world spell Sanctuary?

I always restrict Jotnar as well, they crash the game on turn 1. Scions seem to be ok, but it is possible they are introducing something with a UU late in the game....are you saying you have no CTD through the whole game when you block Scion? Over 600 turns? If so, I can give it a try, but I have had Scion in my games that have been completely stable. It is just that some games get quirky around turn 400-600.

Hm, is it odd that the Jotnar have been in about all of my last games (I play with 24 random civs, so the chances that they dont show up are very, very slim) and no crashes on the first turn?

I don't know the Scions are a causal factor, could be the Jotnar alone. I'm just saying that's what I did and it seemed to eliminate all the crashes.

I haven't finished a game yet after doing those settings... I've played up to turn 300 or so and I don't recall a single crash.

ps nobody said what "Clear Swamp" does. I suspect, looking at the XML, that it's supposed to take it back to a marsh. Anyway, if so, then it does not appear to be working at all.

I've followed this advice (removing Jotnar and Scion) from AI play and it works for me too, but only on stopping the CTDs when the map is generating or after the first turn.

I continue to have multiple CTDs during the game even if those two civs are not in the game. My last game I went back about 10 turns (I save after every turn now) and was able to continue. I did this several times. It is annoying, but seems necessary if you want to have a chance to finish a game.

So, I have insane loading times. I use a Windows 7 PC (yeah, it's from my school). A coupla times, after loading, it freezes & then crashes. How can I fix this?

Try what I mentioned a few posts above yours.

If you are using RANDOM to select AI opponents, go down the list of game variable to the bottom and select "Restrict Random Civilizations." I choose Jotnar and Scions. This means neither of them will be in the game as your opponent. A bit annoying, but there are plenty of other civs to go up against.

Also, if you are playing for the first time, I always select PLAY NOW and run that through to start a game. Then, I go back and design my custom game.

Does anyone know how to SAVE the variables you want for your Custom game? It's a pain entering them with each game. Thanks.

Something odd..When starting a game in the "Classical Era," when prompted to build something in the city's quick building que, the options for Fletcher and Archery Range don't show up..but upon entering the city and looking at the build options below, they're there.

Thanks for the hints, but usually this is my standard procedure
One of these was second (random) game after CIV start, so the "Restricted Random Civs" are reset for each new Random Game? Then maybe for the next patch set the default for Jotnar and Scions to "Human Only"?
And is it certain that ALL of the startup crashes are connected to these Civs? Maybe mapscript dependent? (Anyone else using MountainCoast wit RifE?)

One thing I've noticed is that if you run IE (Microsoft Internet Explorer) at the same time as Civ, my CTDs go up dramatically.

Yes, it seems to me the options are reset after each game you start. Sometimes I start an RifE game and don't like the Random civ the computer gives me to play and I will go back to the Main Menu to try again. I have to go through and select all my game variables again. That's why I asked if there was a way to save those. I believe there was at one point when I was playing FFH to go in there and fix it so they are saved, but I don't remember what that was.

There certainly may be other gremlins at work here. For me, taking out the Jotnar and Scions has allowed me to start and play well into my games...before I get other CTDs. :(

I use Firefox with Win 7 and still get mid-game crashes so it isn't related to IE or Vista for me.
