Country Music Star Johnny Cash Is Dead at 71

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Country music icon Johnny Cash (news) died on Friday morning due to complications from diabetes, his manager said.

Cash, 71, died at Baptist Hospital in Nashville, Tennessee, according to a statement from manager Lou Robin.


"Johnny died due to complications from diabetes, which resulted in respiratory failure," Robin said.

He was one of the few country singers I really liked. He made some great songs like Ring of Fire, San Quentin.

A great man, like addiv, I too had him as one of the few country singers I liked. A true original in his genre.

He was a frequent visitor to Canada, and appeared on the Tommy Hunter Show (a CBC music programme) countless times.

Johnny Cash was one of my favorite artists. I'm dreading the next time I hear one of his songs. It will no doubt be an emotional experience for me. RIP, Johnny.

I've not really listened to a lot his stuff because the genre isn't my cup of tea, but there were some distinct things that blew me away about Johnny Cash. For one thing, it was his keeping up with 'new' music in his later years. About a decade ago, he did the vocals for a unique U2 song they put as the last track on Zooropa. He also recently covered Nine Inch Nails' "Hurt". Both songs blew me away...

He also wrote over 1500 songs during his lifetime.

Most artists just don't do stuff like that!!!!

Will he be missed? IMHO, he already is....

My father often listened to the Johnny Cash at St. Quentin LP when I was a small boy. Bought it myself recently. Besides being a great musician, altough not in a genre I use to listen except for him, he certainly was a great man - in black.

I hate to see the man in black go. He was recently voted the number one country artist of all time on CMT special; I'm so glad he got to see that accolade before he died! After his wife passed away in May, I was afraid it wouldn't be long before he died, too.

He was possibly the greatest American songwriter of the 20th Century, and proof that anyone can rise above their beginnings. The man had children before he learned to read. One of the giants.

Didn't like his music, but I liked the man. And I believe he was a bit overdue. If that NIN song he covered is any real represantation of how he felt, I'd say its about time. 71 is a good age and for most people, life beyond that is more painful than good.

He was my second favorite country musician after Hank Williams Sr.. I was singing "Ring of Fire" in my head at work two days ago. The fact that he could cover pop songs and make them great just a few years before his death only add to the legend. But that is not why he is great. It is a loss for the America who's story is rarely told. I think all who have ever had the pretense to call themselves musicians are mourning his death. No ring of fire for you Johnny.

Same here, country isn't exactly my favourite kind of music, but I really enjoy listening to Cash's music. The Zooropa song is "The Wanderer" IIRC. IMHO it's actually the killer track on that album. Haven't heart it for quite a while, but will listen to it this afternoon rembering him.

Much of his original music is even better. Before pop country existed there was an honest form of music called country, he was one of it's greatest practitioners.
