[R&F] Rise and Fall General Discussion Thread

Hmm, does somebody care to make a features thread ? I'd do it, but I don't want the responsibility to regularly edit and upgade it...

It's pinned by Bite.

Ugh... weren't BNW and G&K less initially?

Were they? i only got them long after the game was released on special. I seem to remember the expansions to IV costing a similar amount to the base game on release; so this feels cheap to me.

Has anyone considered this comment

"You will watch others buckle under their own weight"

Big empires perhaps getting a negative

They better freaken not! Though I'm good with culture flipping.

Cool, but no UN?

edit: or did I miss it?

I think it's there just in a different guise... "emergency" UN came too late in V

Nope. No U.N./World Congress.

Probably it will be difficult to maintain loyalty on the fringes.

If only that meant such possible scenarios, where Trajan, for example, overextends and sees his empire to fragment into France and Spain... Or England overcolonizes a bit and sees (well, predictably) America to split off. Or some civil war mechanics, where a country splits and the alternative ruler is put in power in the separatist region (where there are two leaders). Or something similar

I'd like to see something along those lines...

onestly as far as fame goes they are pretty much equal, you of course can maybe be biased as indonesia was a dutch colony, i from europe, see the celts as an important classical civilisation and the dutch as an important modern trading and colonial powerhouse

The Celts were never a unified Civilization.

Cultural loyalty is a good addition and may mean the death of forward settling, as nobody could forward settle easily in civ 4 randomly without losing a city.

It will certainly not be missed,

Yeah, they better completely retool that stupid forward settling imperative that the AI has!

I hope you're right, but I wouldn't put any level of stupidity past this AI.

I don't know if I would choose stupidity, but incompetence, definitely, in many games I have played. Others have surprised me a bit. This, I think, is my main worry. Like others have said today, the additions seem great and address other issues lacking now, but if the AI keep making the mistakes they do make, then it might obscure the potentially phenomenal changes. That would be disastrous I think. No wonder some are voicing that they will wait to see before buying. Others will buy it before or regardless. I don't know what I will do yet. These 10 weeks might sweeten the deal. One good thing about having a Mac is that I am forced to wait, regardless, and this gives me the time to consider what people are experiencing and voicing in this and other forums. But it looks really good on paper, I must say that much.

I wonder if this means full on Civil War or just one or two cities breaking apart and becoming free cities. Also, are free cities just going to become city-states? What are the differences?

According to some of the articles, cities with low loyalty to their owners break-away and become free cities. They can't receive envoys or have suzerains like a city-state. They are influenced by the loyalty pressure of the civs around them, and will probably end up flipping to another civ after a while. They can be conquered militarily.

It's basically a two-step version of city-flipping.

I'm curious which civ will have the first look. The Dutch or Mongolia seems quite likely.

Also, conquering a free city is not an act of war against the former owner.
I wonder how "reasonable" the diplomacy penalties will be for invading somebody's renegade provinces.

maybe Vostok Research Station?

Also Korea, since the woman in the video was in an outfit that heavily resembled Queen Seondoek. Or we might just get a curveball and have a Civ that wasnt really shown in the trailer.
Do we think we're getting a first look this Thursday?

This is from the English Steam store entry:

Civilization VI is a game about building an empire to stand the test of time, and the Rise and Fall expansion brings new choices, strategies, and challenges for players as they guide a civilization through the ages. Can you inspire the Loyalty of people around the world, or will you lose cities to your rivals? Will you establish a Golden Age for your civilization, or be mired in a Dark Age? In Civilization VI: Rise and Fall, you truly become a leader for the ages.

Successful leadership of a civilization can send it into a prosperous Golden Age, but falling behind can usher in a Dark Age. Respond well to the challenges of a Dark Age, and your civilization can rise again into renewal with a Heroic Age.

Encourage the Loyalty of your citizens to keep your borders intact, or inspire Loyalty among other civilizations to expand your empire. World borders continually shift and change as Free Cities emerge from empires, and neighbors compete for the Loyalty of cities across the map.

With the new the Governor system, players are able to further customize and specialize their cities, as well as react to the new challenges of Dark Ages and Loyalty. Each of the seven unique governors has its own promotion tree, and lends itself to different playstyles and strategies.

In addition to these new systems, Civilization VI: Rise and Fall introduces eight new civilizations and nine new leaders. Eight new world wonders can be constructed, as well as a variety of new units, districts, buildings, and improvements. There are more ways than ever before to build, conquer, and inspire.
GREAT AGES
As your civilization ebbs and flows, and you reach milestone Historic Moments, you will move towards Dark Ages or Golden Ages, each providing specific challenges or bonuses based on your actions in game. Rise triumphantly from a Dark Age, and your next Golden Age will be even stronger – a Heroic Age.
LOYALTY
Cities now have individual Loyalty to your leadership – let it fall too low, and face the consequences of low yields, revolts, and the potential to lose your city if it declares its own independence. But one civilization’s loss can be your gain as you inspire Loyalty among cities throughout the map and further expand your borders.
GOVERNORS
Recruit, appoint, and upgrade powerful characters with unique specialization bonuses and promotion trees to customize your cities, and reinforce Loyalty
ENHANCED ALLIANCES
An enhanced alliances system allows players to form different types of alliances and build bonuses over time
EMERGENCIES
When a civilization grows too powerful, other civilizations can join a pact against the threatening civilization, and earn rewards, or penalties, when the Emergency ends.
TIMELINE
Review your civilization’s history at any time with the new Timeline feature, a visual journey through the Historic Moments that you encountered on your path to victory.
NEW LEADERS AND CIVS
Nine
new leaders and eight new civilizations are introduced. Each brings unique bonuses and gameplay, as well as a total of eight unique units, two unique buildings, four unique improvements, and two unique districts.
NEW GLOBAL CONTENT
Eight
new world wonders, seven natural wonders, four new units, two new improvements, two new districts, fourteen new buildings, and three new resources have been added.
IMPROVED GAMEPLAY SYSTEMS
The Government system has been enhanced with new Policies, including Dark Age Policies, new hidden leader Agendas, new Casus Belli, and additional improvements to existing systems.

But why did they remove railroads from this game? I cannot comprehend. Maybe a second expansion will bring it back, but I don't know why they got rid of this?

Overall they pretty much just changed the name of railroads to modern roads. I don't mind seeing railroads returned one way or another; but we haven't lost what they represented out of the game.

On reddit they say Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station is the polar research district and it's a world wonder. If that's true, than we actually know all the world wonders already. They seem cool, but we actually still lack some great wonders like Taj Mahal or Machu Picchu (indicating that we probably have to wait longer for the Mughals what is understandable, but also make them more likely to be included at some point), but more worrying no Machu Picchu what can actually mean they won't include the Inca's or decided to prefer a colonial world wonder instead of Machu Picchu for the colonial theme.

I've been in and out of this thread the last few hours so I haven't had time to comb through everything just yet, but has there been any mention of tweaks/additions/overhauls to the espionage system?

So many pages already, not reading all that :D Is the name actually a reference to a Civ IV mod?

The Civ IV mod Rhye's and Fall, yes. Intentionally or no, it's a nod to the mod. And that rhymes, so it must be true.

if so, i implore all gamers and consumers to reach back in their memory and recall the DDE fiasco. Hype is FUN, but there's no need to shell out money now for it. Be hype, but wait to spend your money until you know exactly what you're getting!

Sorry Bro but I'll be pre-ordering 3 copies....2 to play LAN and one for my daughter and son-in-law.

You're referring to the Digital Deluxe Edition of Civ 6? They went above and beyond to make that right. Nubia DLC rectified the issue and Khmer/Indonesia DLC was more than I thought was necessary. The way they handled that was more than fair to us consumers. So I don't really have reservations about preordering this expansion.

I am concerned that Ed Beach is not leading this expansion, not to be ageist, but I goggled the new guy and he looks about 16...
Given the quality of recent patches, I strongly urge people not to pre-order this expansion. Best to wait on this one for reviews and early feedback I think.

Having said that the new features sound good, especially the loyalty/city flipping mechanic. Hopefully it will rein in ICS a bit and make tall play style more viable.

Financier governor allows a city to buy districts with gold.

This is a huge balance change, cementing gold as the top dog of resources. I think I like it, will make founding new cities late game more viable.
