Rise of the Machines

Yah, I should have promoted the hurt ones, force of habit, I usually leave units unpromoted until i know what I'm going to do with them:smoke:... oops.

I'm pretty much going to assume IamSid is out of this, so you're up Hamtastic.

Well, yeah, the oil thing probably would have been ok for unsophisticated robots. We advanced beings, however, have created spit makers for ourselves. You know - for spitting on things to impress our human underlings.
You guys have obviously been talking too much to Erasmus (ref) about machine culture, art and humanity.

[0] 650AD - I take stock of the nation. Man... These Aztecs sure have settled a bunch! There's one city East of Tenoch, and at least four more to the north and West. Looks like there's still a whole bunch of them more to kill! I move the axe from Tenoch towards Xoch to see what kinds of defenses they have up there, and four catapults from Teot up north to the next city up there.

[1] 660AD - Between turns, axemen from Tlat attack our catapult just outside the city. We win! Tlat is now down to two archers. :)

Also, an archer moves out of Tlaxcala, the city is now down to two defenders, prime for attack by our three units stationed there. :)

And an archer moves out of the northern city to meet our advancing cats.

We get Code of Laws, start on Priesthood so we can get Monarchy and Hereditary rule.

Calcutta finishes theare, starts on catapult.

One catapult attacks Tlat, at 56% odds... We lose. Meh, I decide to save the second cat for now.

We do better at Tlax. Our first catapult damages axeman 50%, and withdraws. Second cat takes out the archer, and the sword finishes off the axe, though he is down to 0.2 health. I decide to keep the city, though we may lose it to the archer that just exited it.

We are having bad luck again with the archer up north. I lose two cats on him, despite having 67% odds of winning. :( The city, however, Calixtlahuaca (Cali from now on :D) is only defended by an archer and a spear.

[2] 670AD - We get Priesthood. On to Monarchy. Between turns, an archer from Tlat attacks our last catapult at the city, and... loses! Wow, we are having all the luck *between* the turns, and none during the turns! :lol: Any way, Tlat is then down an archer, but now they've built another jaguar, and the one that was guarding the ivory to the south moves into the city.

[3] 680AD - GAH!!!! I *cannot* believe this! I lose the Axe attacking Xoch, at the odds of 70%.

[4] 690AD - Caesar demands 200 gold. Sure, dude, whatever, just don't kill us, we are busy with something else for now. Bangalore builds catapult, starts another one. Ditto Calcutta. Teot comes out of resistance. Starts building Theatre.

[5] 700AD - Tlaxcala comes out of resistance, starts building Theatre.

[6] 710AD - Monty wants peace for Meditation and 100 gold. No! Not Now! I am about to take two more of your cities!

Bombay builds catapult. Starts one more.

Cali burns! There appear to be no more cities north of it, but we shall investigate further.

[7] 720AD - We get Monarchy. Next up is Literature. Madras builds catapult. Starts and whips sword. Buddhism spreads to our lands.

We lose two more cats attacking Xoch, both had very good odds of winning! In fact, the one with 75% win odds didn't even scratch the defender. Either I am severely misunderstanding something about combat, or the random number generator *hates* me today.

[8] 730AD - Madras builds sword. Starts on catapult.

A jaguar moves in on Tlaxcala. I kill him off.

[9] 740AD - Tenoch builds Barracks, starts and whips sword, as more Monty's forces are assembling. Xochicalco is taken and burnt to the ground.

[10] 750AD - Tenoch builds sword. Starts on cat. The sword is immediately killed (against favorable odds) by a marauding Jaguar warrior next to Tenoch. I take him out with a local catapult, however.

Looks like throughout this turn, I lost a whole bunch of units, but did take three cities away from the Aztecs. They are now down to two big ones. The one in the east has some troops moving towards it from the south, and also there are a couple of catapults in the West. The city in the West has *no* troops setting up to attack it at the moment, but I don't think they can mount much of an attack themselves, either.

We are now second in military power, outdone by a little bit by JC.

Other than that, we are doing pretty well. I think after the war with Monty, we will need to concentrate on building up the infrastructure for a while, however.

Vovan

Hey there. Here's a quick turnaround time. Hopefully my luck in combat will be better than Vovan's.

IBT: I inform our new Aztecan subjects that we will begin referring to their cities with strings of numbers following the letter A (for Aztec), indicating the order in which we captured them. The citizens of A1, A2, and A3 see the wisdom of our plan and comply.

I instruct our science bots :scan: to use more money so we can gain this "literature" faster.

760: Move some units around, get them repaired.

770: Literature discovered! :king: I start Music. If we get the artist, we can keep him around for a golden age (or do something else with him, but I don't really know what we'd need much culture for right now).

Calcutta: Catapult -> Catapult

780: Mansa offers Monotheism & 270 gold for theology. Nope.

Bombay: Catapult -> Catapult

Our Units spot Tlatelolco, soon to be A4. 3 archers are defending it, and a jaguar is fortified on an elephant outside town

790: Not much.

800: A jaguar attacks our catapults outside Tlateloco & they win. Ha ha!

Bangalore: Cat-> Cat

Madras: Cat-> Axe, who I whip

Taoism FIDAL

begin bombarding Tlatelolco's defenses

810: Colossus finished! :hammer: Yippee! Delhi starts Great Library, which should be done in about 23

Madras: Axe-> Cat

A2: Theatre->forge

Tlatelolco defense down to 0, hold off on attack for more units

820: A1: Cat->Forge

I learn that we now have copper. Oh. That would have helped with that whole "building the Colossus" thing, huh? :( Too bad! We machines have no need for foolish metals. Ummm. Wait. What kind of machines are we, anyway?

hold off on attack

830: More troop shuffling

840: Calcutta: Cat->Forge

A3's borders expand

I move the troops some more

850: Stupid Monty builds another jag and sends it out. It kills a cat

Bombay: Cat->Cat

I launch attack on Tlatelolco, get a sweet withdraw from the 1st catapult, who messes their units up. Destroy remaining archers and the stupid jag that just killed our cat. Capture Tlatelolco (needs to be renamed to A4), install a new Governator. I suicided an unpromoted cat onto the jag fortified out of town so he's weakened and can't kill any of our promoted but injured cats. Here he is now - think he's worried:

Civ4ScreenShot0006.JPG
Maybe we should declare peace with Monty? I know you don't like that idea, but we could get some gold and stuff from him, and he's absolutely no threat any more. Additionally, getting rid of some war wearniness might be good for some cities. Here's the graph o' stats.

IT- Things look really good, Hamtastic and Vovan. Redirect units to begin a the final battle at Texoco, humans have such odd names.

1st 860AD- The human loiterer outside of our great city A4 has been terminated.
IBT- Texoco sends a Spear to attack our Cat, and gives up his pathetic existance to meet this God that our slaves pray to. Humans are so weak.

2nd 870AD- Japan is a threat now, not later. We are -3 with only a +1...
CloseBorders.JPG

Our close borders spark tensions. I seriously think that Toky will likely decalre in your turns, Vovan.

3rd 880AD- Madras builds Cat>Cat, continue moving troops to Texoco and begin bombarding.

4th 890AD- Music completes, start Feudalism
A3 completes Theater>Rax, the GA from music is in Delhi, I left him there as I think we should all consider how to use him; my opinion is to bomb and increase our culture in the N of our Empire. I revolt to Hereditary Rule also.

5th 900AD- Bangalore completes Cat>Sword, whipped, not shaken.
A2 Forge>Courthouse
A4 begins Courthouse

6th 910AD- Mansa comes for OB, messenger shot.
Bangalore completes Sword>Cat

7th 920AD- Bombay completes Cat>Courthouse
Continue to bomb Texoco.

8th 930AD- I take Texoco, not with the Sword that was standing there, but one of our glorious Catapults, behold the power of the Machines. As I celebrate and anticipate the beautiful message infoming me that the Aztecs have been destroyed, I see this...
Roaches.JPG

They say a roach can live 7 days without it's head, will someone PLEASE step on this roach?

9th 940AD- A1 completes Forge>Courthouse, Texoco renamed to A5.

10th 950AD- Alex offers Incense for Rice, yes.

Here's the save and a few other screenies. Vovan, I left you something I think you might find useful on the western side of our empire, hint hint, nudge nudge.

And the save...

Hey Icelion, looks great. Listen, though, we should probably move for steel ASAP. Catapults will be mildly useless when others get to Maces. If others get to rifleman, though, before we get to cannons, we can't do much of anything. I see two routes:

1) Paper > education > Gunpowder > Chemisty > Steel

or

2) Guilds > Gunpowder > Chemisty > Steel

I favor route 2, especially since we went after feudalism, which I hadn't expected. Route 2 could also give us a brief side trip for banking, which would give us mercantilism, which we should probably grab since we don't have any foreign trade routes anyway. Thoughts?

Wow, that is quick turnaround time. :)

I'll try to do my best and finish off the Aztecs on my turns. Hopefully, I won't slaughter half of our army in the process (again). :D

Though that won't be today, as it's getting late. :(

Also getting cannons ASAP strikes me as a good idea. :)

I will ponder attacking the Japanese. It is true that if we want to do more war before cats are too weak, we should probably do it sooner rather than later and then use the period when the cats are too weak, but cannons aren't yet around to do some building up...

Also, IceLion, do you think it'd be good to have a fourth person? We could post a request in the SG registration thread. Someone might join in on the fun. :)

Vovan

My thoughts in going with Civil Service is that we could also pick up Machinery and get Macemen ourselves. We have a pretty decent lead in techs over the other civs. I totally agree that Steel is a must and since that seems to be the majority opinion, who am I to argue?

As far as getting a fourth person, thats fine with me, but I also like the spped that this is moving at with the three of us. I'll post tomorrow to see if we can get another person to join. Gotta keep the hive happy!

Edit: I am a total freaking bonehead! My intention with going Feudalism was because it's a prereq for Civil Service, what I failed to comprehend is that CoL (which we already have) is as well. Feel free to fire at will...

Well shop at ruff-mart where we are happy to point out silly little inconsistancies, ask mundane questions and generally lurk.

More than welcome to join if you want to ruff_hi, since the three of us have burned through our turns already, and if Vovan doesn't mind, you're up. There should be enough troops in the area to take that last Aztec city.

As far as research goes, I'd head down path 2 that Hamtastic posted, which is: Guilds>Gunpowder>Chemistry>Steel. All in favor?

Thanks. Re 'i'm up' - thx but give me a skip this round to get up to speed with the game and where you guys are heading with this. Join and then ask for a skip - now there is something you don't see every day.

Another thought. We are eating into the culture borders on two of Toky's cities, we could culture bomb and probably get them to flip. This will more than likely cause him to declare, but that would be 2 less cities of his that we would have to worry about. Just an idea.

Guess that means you're up Vovan. ruff_hi, make sure you read the variant rules from the first post, if in doubt, ask :). Our goal in this game is very simple, the only victory condition enabled for this is conquest. To win, we must rule them all.:hammer:

Great - I will read up on the rules. One thing that jumps out at me is that you guys cannot declare war so attacking Japan at present is out (unless you are already at war). Did you attack or get attacked in your first war?
