RNES10: Board NES Simplicity

Orders sent.

cool, have orders from 5 of you now. still need Erez's and ThomAnder's

Update 8
well if there's one thing i learned from this update, its that games like this NEED a defencive bonus... UKnemesis was right. one word i would use to describe this turn is... STEAMROLL.

Areas taken without a fight: Camelot, Durham, Stafford, Towchester, Salisbury, Dorchester (after border fight)

BAttles
Dorchester/Salisbury Border 3 Gray vs 1 Red. the red army kills one of the Grays while being killed.
Avalon Two defenders faced off against six of Erez's armies. The first day, the defenders were suprised to find that the attackers didnt shoot back when shot at. One of erez's armies died, none of Emu's did. Second day it was the other way around, as both defending armies were destroyed.
Alcester One defender is attacked by sever attacking armies, and manages to take out one attacker before being destroyed.
Warwick Erez actualy manages an almost possible attack against Warman. A 1 vs 2, but an attack none the less. Warman's defenders kill off the attacker without suffering any major damage.
Newton a three way battle here. 1 of ThomAnder's armies, fights against 3 of Emu's armies and 4 of Disenfrancised's. First day, ThomAnder's army basicaly gives up and is destroyed. a 3vs4 fight for control ensues. Emu's armies score a hit against Disenfrancised's, but are all destroyed in return (3 hits).
Norfolk Emu Attacks this area with 4 armies, one of which dies to kill the lone defender.

Erik Mesoy - 14 gold = 6+12-4
Emu - 31 gold = 3+48-20
Disenfrancised - 8 gold = 0+18-10
Tossi - 5 gold = 5+3-3
Warman - 30 gold = 5+54-29
ThomAnder is eliminated
Erez - -1 gold = 1+3-5 which means i'm taking one of your armies away bringing you to 0 gold=1+3-4

Alive! Another turn of aliveness! Next goal: To outlive Erez!

5 days, including a long weekend for the USans, and still only 1 of you sent orders...
if it wasnt for my never ending pessimism i'd think that maybe something realy bad had happened to all the rest of you, but my negative outlook on life suggests that you just couldnt be bothered.

well, be bothered! send your orders now or i may do something drastic, and you'd regret it... well, i hope you'd regret it.

Orders have been sent! I'm sorry, I needed some time to think about my strategic situation.

Orders coming down the pipe soon.

which now leaves me needing orders from Erez and Disenfrancised.

Edit: well, posting that didnt help much in getting their orders, so i've now sent them both a PM. hope that works.

Disenfrancised, you are now the last person i need orders from...
Update is tomorow afternoon at latest (ie 24 hours from now), with or without your orders, though i would MUCH prefer with.

Update 9
Erez, you were wrong in your orders, if you look at the map, you'll see there are Two areas next to you, not "there is only one" as you said in your orders... but i think i know which one you meant, next time i'll pick the wrong one, thanks for sending orders, but is it realy that hard to take a look at the map.
taken without a fight: Towchester,

Battles:
Exeter - Erez (4) and Emu (1) attack Erik's 5 defenders. The first day is a stand off, both sides of the conflict lose 2 armies. On the next day one more army on each side is killed, leaving two defenders against one of each of attackers. On the third day all 4 armies are destoreyed. nothing survives, but erik retains control of the area.
Salisbury - 5 of Emu's armies attack the 3 defenders. Both sides lose 3 armies, and Emu's remaining 2 armies take control of the area.
Newton - 3 defenders against 9 attackers (from two directions) is a hopeless battle for Disenfrancised's forces, but they do their best, and manage to destroy one of the attacking armies before being routed.
Stoke - Tossi throws everything he's got, 4 armies, here. They are met by two freshly recruited armies. It takes two days, and costs two armies, but the defenders are destroyed.

Emu - 22 gold = 1+51-30
Tossi - 7 gold = 3+6-2
Erik Mesoy - 13 gold = 4+9-0
Warman - 19 gold = 4+57-42
Erez - 3 gold = 0+3-0
Disenfrancised - 3 gold = 0+12-9

Victory! Go blue! Go blue!

If by "games like this" you mean board games, no. What went wrong is that you put in place an exponential battle system, which rewarded army grouping.

1v1, 33% chance each of winning, losing or drawing.
2v1, 19/21 chance of winning.
3v1, something like 313/315 chance of winning.
4v1, 9763/9765 chance of winning.

Exponential systems magnify small advantages into big advantages. One measure to fix this might be "militia" or "fortification" armies, which cost 1 gold, have no upkeep, but must stay in the territory they are created in.

even though that's not what my post that you quote sais, that's actualy what i was thinking about when i said it. UK always liked having militia type defencives for areas, and i never liked them (they can make it a bit confusing when "everything" dies). but from this game i see that he was right.
you're right too, either the battle system has to be a bit more evened out/more complicated, or something akin to a base defence has to be added. but i wont do anything like that in this game... its gone too far in its current state to be altered that drasticaly now. i'll know for next time though. have actualy started slowly thinking about hte next game... have the map already (swiped from one of my favorite old time NESs), just gotta figure out still which of the original mod's game rules to keep, and which to remake on my own.

Uh? I was quoting you from update 8, post 123, linky.

An alternative would be for armies to rout instead of getting destroyed. That way huge super armies don't crush enemies one by one.

that came out wrong. i dont mean you misquoted me, i mean that my post you quoted didnt actualy say what i was thinking at the time that i typed it.

the problem with retreating armies (i assume that's what you mean with routs) is that its hard to decide/determine where they would retreat to. a player with a 12 army stack is unlikely to include a "if this dies retreat to X" in his orders, and if i as the mod have to decide where they're retreating to, i'll eventualy run into a player complaining "well it would have made perfect sense to retreat to Y, and not to X, i want it changed"

i'll eventualy run into a player complaining
You always will. All mods will. What you can do is to ensure that other players who read the rules will be on your side against the complaining player. Put something like the following in the rules:
  • If you do not include a retreat order for your army, it will not retreat.

Other thoughts:

An order including a retreat could look like this:
"Move 5 armies from Foo to Bar. If 8 or more enemies are there, retreat back to Foo."

Retreating could then be based only on whether the enemy has a really huge force, and retreats are only to one province. Not "if so-and-so many move to there, otherwise there, but if this then that", but only "if enemy has X armies retreat to Y". If an army would retreat into a province that an enemy took... well, I'm not sure whether it should retreat anyway and fight the new enemies, or stay and not retreat. Make a rule on that.

Orders - build armies in Devon, Cornwall and Exeter. Move from Devon and Cornwall to Exeter.

It's not like there's much else to do. :(

2 down, 4 to go... also, erik, there's always that one army in exeter that could attack one of your two oppressors. send me a pm if you want to add that to your orders, otherwise i'll use the ones you posted.

you know, if i had been sitting here pressing the refresh button expecting to see a flood of new PMs all of a sudden since the update, i would have pressed it like 200 thousand times, and would still only have orders from a grand total of TWO of you.
i realy do wish to do updates more often then once a week, but that's tough when i dont have orders from you all.
