Role Play Challenge: Gandhi the Pacifist

Shadow Game!

Start to 1395 AD finish:

Spoiler :
I settled in place and went for hindu while building a settler. I got hindu. Settled the marble/fish/wheat city to the SW. I drooled seeing marble for oracle.

As promised, I got hunting and agriculture next. Each city made a fast worker while I teched mono then priesthood. I went writing after priesthood.

Masonry is needed for mono (i'd picked up the wheel somewhere in there) so I quarried the marble and roaded it to the capitol. I made the oracle WITHOUT BRONZE WORKING. Meanwhile I...fogbusted with mass scouts from the marble city. I actually let a barb warrior attack a warrior while leaving my city defenseless at one point - bit of a risk. One other barb warrior died to a scout fortified on a hill with guerrilla. After that the AIs (freddy and darius) expanded and the scouts fogbusted enough that I never had to deal with barbs again!

Actually, that isn't true, but it comes much later and is more comical than a problem ;).

I DID manage to found judaism, and as a result of making a temple was able to get a prophet out even sooner than anticipated, so I bulbed theology. I went for literature after that and built the AP en route. Here I am at 160 AD:

160ADstrongishposition0000.jpg

And the tech trade situation - note that while my teching isn't great winning races to religious techs gives you some good trade opportunities. Prioritizing literature for TGL is nice too because as I've noted, I have marble.

160ADtech0000.jpg

As you can see from above, I actually managed to get EVERYONE IN CONTACT BUDDHIST, INCLUDING ME. I built the AP in Judaism - the religion no AI had. Yeah, at that point I realized I'd managed a very high AP diplo win chance. Peaceful AIs in the same religion - I'm so scared .

So basically the rest of the game was bulbing divine right, building a few wonders, and teching to optics. I met the final AIs - lincoln and Hatty - in confucianism, and they were backwards. Confucianism and buddhism are the only 2 religions I didn't found.

Religious spread path: MM (friendly - would spread a lot on his own probably), Freddy (friendly), Darius (he had an ice city at 1 pop that wasn't spreading anything quickly), then hatsheput/lincoln/liz simultaneously (didn't want to screw around with them - liz had gone FR and the other 2 were still confucian. How did that go? On the first AP win vote:

.

I'll just post the pictures of score and demographics from the end:

Fun, fast game. Scouts fogbust ftw . Founding 5 religions gave me SO MUCH CULTURE pressure. In 3 cases I didn't need a monument - I "just used a holy city".

Ok, back to NC Joao now.

Edit: Oh yeah, I actually saw a barb galley. It was chasing an english work boat. It went clean through my territory, never attacking anything, continuing to chase that work boat in a circle around the continent until someone eventually killed it . For my part, I used a workboat to fogbust the only spot that I wasn't fogbusting with cities already until I settled it later. Screw 3.17's barb galleys in this game! Ha!

Gandhi the Pacifist: Part I

Decided to roll right into this RPC!

First thing is we settled in place. We want to get some religion (s) and the Great wall and do not want to waste anytime.

GandhiA0000.jpg

we see to the west several more floodplains. Looks like a very strong cottage capital!

Tech order went Polytheism/BW/<asonry/AH/Monotheism/Priesthood/wheel/pottery

Our exploring warrior popped

GandhiA0001.jpg

and explored a bit before getting killed.

And soon we get

GabdhiA0000.jpg

We convert immediately.

And then something rather unexpected occurred

GandhiA0002.jpg

Note the red message, Egypt has been destroyed! WOW! I do not recall any barbarian uprising message but we escalated our Great wall efforts!

Here we built our second city

GandhiA0003.jpg

OK, we have met all AIs except Lincoln and the dead Egyptians. Fred is directly south, Darius to the west.

Soon we get

GandhiA0004.jpg

No barbs, but we areally are NOT looking for a GSpy this game.

Soon in Bombay we found

GandhiA0005.jpg

We revolt to Judaism (gotta love Spiritual!) to quickly grow the culture borders before Fred can move in.

Our third citty is right ONTOP of the copper. Sure we do not need it, but the extra hammers and accessability to resources plus a bit of a block against Darius in the east is well worth it.

We go agressively after the oracle mostly for the Prophet points and

GandhiA0007.jpg

A little too fast but that's OK. We adopt Monarchy and revolt to HR (and that ONE happy face from the lone honorary guard.

Even with the oracle and running a priest from a temple we got

GandhiA0009.jpg

One of the few times we did NOT want a GSPY!

A look at the land

GandhiA0010.jpg

I see quite a bit of REXing here, especially on th western ocean and to the east with plenty of land to fillin!

OK, as you can see I am very quickly trying to establish 3 culture centers, hoping to nab a wonder in that third city!

But what to do with the GSPY? I rather not settle or get scotland yard because of the espionage limits. The question is do I save him or spin off a Golden Age now?

He's a completely invisible scout that never gets caught, use him to scout till you have reason to start a GA.

Excellent idea!

The Great Spy won't be vulnerable to barbarians, right (I don't know if he will or not)?

IIRC nothing can attack a great spy, or capture it. FOG BUST :p. Wait, no, you got the great wall. Just scout :p.

I deliberately avoided the GW in my play of this. It's possible to do so and survive within the rules, actually! But if I were to do it again, I might just build the stupid thing and avoid the potential for a heart attack .

Edit: Good job on the religions so far. Are you going cultural?

I am getting prepared to go cultural, but we shall see how we go about this. I have wanted to do a culture slider culture win, those first two cities look pretty good for one!

Madscientist, what difficulty setting is this on? I'm really impressed by how you've gotten two religions, and so many early wonders.

I just quit the game during the in-game upgrade. The download from Civfanatics and install took about 10 minutes. Amazing.
I did the same, only I quit from the in game update after about ten minutes. Life's too short to do it that way; even though it took awhile to figure out where everything went, I think I saved a lot of time doing it the hands on way.

How do you do the install? I downloaded it from here and can't figure out how to install...
Unzip it, then run it. I don't remember doing anything besides that, but if you have more problems let us know.

according to the opening post it's Monarch, impressive on the religions, yep.
Funny thing is that Buddhism is probably in Barbarian hands right now (seems that it hasn't been founded on Mad's continent and, well, Hatty the religious pacifist got pwned)

Spoiler :
I wonder how Lincoln's doing on his continent all by himself? Without Hattie he's probably lonely and even more backwards than when TMIT found him.
Are you playing the current minor gauntlet TMIT?

Looks like you are off to a good start for a cultural win

Difficulty is Monarch, and I will unlikely upgrade difficulty but prefer to play all leaders through.

The 2 religions are not as impressive as it sounds, Gandhi is the only leader here to start with mysticism and masonry is pretty easy to tech once you have mining and Mysticism.

Note to all: thanks, and It's now running.

I'm not familiar with the gauntlets. All things considered, I'm newer to the forums than a lot of players. What does participation in the major/minor gauntlets entail? I'll probably have a look :p.

And oh yes, I'm perfectly willing to get myself flattened on immortal/deity (Deity =), although I do like some games I can win now and then too.

Gandhi the Pacifist: Part II

OK, strolling down the peace-loving road. With one major glitch and another potentially game neding one. But we shall see.

First of all we establish our next city

GandhiB0000.jpg

Which blocks off an additional AI from settling behind us, not that there are any great digs to our north, but we do not need much land for this game.

ALOT of trade shots this game, well that's what you get for no army

GandhiB0001.jpg

As you can see Darius has teched CoL before us and founded Confiscianism, the majot glitch in teh road. As of the save I cannot get him to convert to our faith.

Mansa and Fred also quickly adopted Confiscianism but still were talking and trading

GandhiB0002.jpg

GandhiB0003.jpg

we got a Great Prophet which allowed us to build

GandhiB0004.jpg

So between us spamming Judaist missionaries and the shrine, our favored religion spread to almost all cities, getting Liz/MM/Fred to adopt it.

We made several more trades, getting archer and getting MM to convert. Our shrine income is insane allowing us to be 100% science all game.

Finally, we actually manage to build

GandhiB0006.jpg

OK, three core culture cities setting up!

Speaking of which, techpath: fishing/writing/meditation/math aesthetics/lit/music (first there)drama/philosphy (lost Taoism to Darius)/paper/start education (more on that later).

We then popped a Prophet in the capital and founded Christianity.

GandhiB0007.jpg

We started work on the AP in teh ToA city (Vij something). Since we bulbed it 4 turns before Darius teched it, if I want to get the AP into Judaism instad of Confuscian I need to build it.

We did use theology to backfill techs quite a bit, allowing my Judaist friends the chance to build the AP also.

we got a great random event for spreading Judaism to more cities.

GandhiB0010.jpg

Note, any request made I giv einto. This includes donating Mathematics to essentially the entire world.

we get this wonder in the capital

GandhiB0012.jpg

After the Ragnar game, it's ncie to run a scientist again!

Now we donated wine to darius and made this trade

GandhiB0014.jpg

Heping, but still cannot get him to pleased. The good thing is his favorite civic is FR so I am hoping he builds the Schwan Paya.

The Free Artist we settled in the ToA/AP city to boost culture there.

And after Philosophy we swap civics

GandhiB0016.jpg

Finally we hit

GandhiB0017.jpg

Excellent.

We also got

GandhiB0018.jpg

I was really hoping for a Great Scientist to bulb education. OK I saved here for some more advice on how to use this Great Prophet! And the next tech since we only just started education.

TEchs

GandhiB0019.jpg

Diplomacy

GandhiB0020.jpg

Ap results

GandhiB0021.jpg

Seams like the world like the pretty redhead more than the bald old man. Can't say I blame them.

The religious aspect

GandhiB0022.jpg

And working on the culture aspect

GandhiB0023.jpg

A view of the land

GanhdiB0000.jpg

Looking for one more coastal city to the north which get's us 6 and 2 catherdrals of each faith per city. Good enough.

And last our cities

GanhdiB0001.jpg

OK, some items to discuss

1) How to get Darius to convert, if he will.
2) The AP can be a game loser if Judaism spreads to one American city.
3) What to do with the great Prophet? Hindu shrine? Bulb Divine Right? save (we still have the Great Spy which was a terrific scout!). Settling seams like a waste.
4) Next tech??? education and divine right are bulbable techs depending on which comes next (and we alreayd have a Prophet).
5) Wonders, trying to spread them arround and we are first to paper for the Univ of Sankore.

Lot's to do, amazing how productive we can be without worrying about military.

:scan::scan:suscribed:scan::scan:

2) I'm not sure how you can stop an AP win if one comes up
most likely when the AI starts getting liberalism, darius and Liz will go FR and the others may follow, this makes it less likely.
The delay on this is, I assume, you can't get to Lincoln yet so it won't happen till after optics at least
