Update:
Generally, there's good news and bad news.
The good news is that I've started the irrigation projects, and in 15 turns I turned a great deal of my land into farms. Also, another Great scientist will pop out in the next turn. I might just make an academy in York, since it is the second highest beaker city:
The bad news is that I was not able to pop out a great merchant in 15 turns. I tried everything that I could, including switching to caste from the beginning and switching to caste during the golden age. I just can't pop out a great merchant in time to switch back to slavery during the golden age. The next Great merchant will come out in 4 turns:
Here is the tech tree for those who want to see it:
I did not screenie this, but I have a 15 stack army now from troops in Hastings and troops coming to Hastings. A good deal of it is swords and axes, which I wanted to switch to maces by conducting a trade mission with a GM. I think I will upgrade them next turn. It also consists of crossbowmen, and about 5 catapults. I believe that I could attack next update, as soon as I pop out my GM and conduct trade of course.
Meanwhile, Roosevelt is increasing in score. Don't know what to make of that.
