About when to open christmas gifts: it's a tradition to open the gifts when santa claus brings them to your home - which is on the 24th evening while everyone is still awake.
I'm not sure, but I think that's the protestant way, and to open the gifts on 25th is a catholic way (but this might just be a misinterpretation).
