Scenario Project: Assyrian Empire

I never knew that. Its certainly a possibility, I'll have to think about it (right now, I was thinking about giving them a very late uu for when they were under Chaldean control).

I'm almost done the tech tree. Unfortuantely, in order to finish it completely, I have to go through another phase of CONSTANT CRASHING EVEN THOUGH I THINK I'M DOING EVERYTHING RIGHT!!!

This is related to Civilodpedia icons. It seems I have tripple checked the paths and they are correct, but it doesn't work at all. It is definately the fault of the icons (I can right click on an image in the city window to bring up the civilopedia page and it crashes also).

There is one difference I did compared to how I normally add units, and I wonder if anyone knows if I'm doing something wrong here. Normally, I add civilopedia files to the standard art\civilopedia\icons\units folder. In this case, I created my own civilopedia folder (I followed the same format of art\civilopedia\icons\units, I just stuck it in a main folder called "Assyria1"). I know that the scenario is searching the folder because I can use the units, it just crashes when I try to look at their civilopedia pages.

I realize that this might be hard to understand without checking it yourself, but the scenario is currently 15 MB, so I don't want to upload it until I'm closer to being done.

Does anyone have any ideas? :)

Tech Tree is Done!

OK, my initial plan was to post a preview and ask for suggestions, but this was a bit more difficult than I anticipated, so they better be some damn good suggestions :p

I'm just kidding, advice is good, please give me as many suggestions as possible. You should note that the icons aren't the final ones I'm using, and that a few improvements aren't correct.

If there's no suggestions, I'll work on getting the correct icons.

Oh yeah, you should probably get rid of writing, pottery, the wheel and masonry, or just make most civ's start with those techs.

I will probably give Writing, Pottery, and Masonry to everyone. The Wheel is there because I couldn't think of a better name. I'm not sure yet, but I'm thinking of getting a little creative flexibility for scenario purposes. In reality, a bunch of these techs could probably be owned by various civs.

I'm not sure how the purple lines got there, I'm thinking its just a "..." to show that the name goes past the box.

Instead of "The Wheel," you could have "The Spoke" or something in that vein. Or have "Chariotry" precede "The Spoke," if you want to have those Sumerian solid-wheeled Battle Carts first, followed thereafter by chariots proper (with spoked wheels). Or maybe there's a tech name that could be derived from other important chariot parts, like greased axles or I don't know what. (I really don't know, eh! :))

Remind me of the time-frame again? Some of those techs - like writing - sound awfully early for an Assyrian scenario.

Nah. Assyrians built the first library (ashurbanipal library), which required them to write.

Also, I believe Assyrians were the first to use chariots (might have been Egyptians). Assyrian were, however, the first to use cavalry and boots (Gave soldiers better footwear so they weren't injured there as easily. They were iron-toed/heeled boots btw)

Chariots were Assyrian. We invented a lot of stuff. Most of it is debatable though... beer, advanced math, the spread of christianity across asia. There’s a lot of history still waiting to be dug up beneath Baghdad.
Assyrian's get 1 page in most history books if the writer is feeling generous. I recently was disgusted by an “ancient civilizations” history book that shortened Assyrians to 1 sentence. :|
Louis XXIV,
Any chance you can write a mod so I can simply start a new game with Assyrians being one of the options?
I was drawn to the first Civ games because they had all the “ancient” civs so I could play as myself (sargon) and my nationality (assyrian). Civ 4 let me down.

Four-wheeled battle carts = chariots?

yeah, whoops, my stupidness.

The Sumerians had chariots circa 2500 B.C. long before the Assyrians.

Then I guess the history books have it wrong. It's funny that we argue about something that happened 4500 years ago. Assyrians, Sumerian, and Babylonians were the first 3 real "civilizations". The reason they were called "civs" is because they managed to link more than one city under 1 ruler. Wars obviously followed and whatever one nation invented others quickly copied or stole. The hanging gardens for example were thought to be Babylonian, but many historians think Assyrians were in control of Babylon when the gardens were built. There's no real way to tell for sure who did what anymore without a time machine. All we can do is use the info archeologists dig up and form the best opinions we can. There were a lot of Assyrian inventions that were adopted by other nations and later clamied to be "invented" by them.

The Neo-Hittites should be divided into several states.
Also, the Hurrites from around Urartu should be strong but not too much.

The sumerian chariots were -at first- four-wheeled chariots pulled by donkeys, used as a quick transport, nothing else.
