SGFN-05: India Stomps the World

Good luck Guys.

Keep a Place booked for me in the next SGFN

BEST SG score (atleast in Overseer score list).

And, Thanks for last save, once I get home, I would like to take a look at replay.

Excellent Win, and Great Score :goodjob:.

Any Final thoughts, like what was the turning point of the game?

Turning points?

1. Fall of Germany.
2. Great starting position - rivers, middle of map, lots of room to expand + floodplains.
3. Manage to get into lead just by the time of elephants - those monsters 'freed' many cities to us.

Way to go!!!!

Excellent game.

So what is the theme for the next one? :mischief:

[party]:banana::band::banana:[party]

A decisive last turnset, Anaxagoras.

The turning point in my opinion happened when we had to declare on Germany when we were at our weakest:
*Germany never showed up.
* A touch later we got our Scientific Great Leader.
That, together with a loaded start position, set us up nicely.

Considering this game was over pretty soon, the next game should be a longer one.

I would Consider an OCC or a Space Race at Demigod

Hey, Optional, nice to see you back under your original screen name.

I think the two biggest factors in the win were:
1. The starting position, near a whole raft of cows, floodplains, ivory, and two other luxes.
2. The scientific GL. The impact of the Pyramids on this game would be hard to overstate. If you look at the event movie, we did not fall significantly behind any of the AI - not even the Agri civs - in number of cities at any point in the game. That's very unusual at Emperor level. It also meant that we could get the SoZ very early without delaying our expansion. We still had 13 Ancient Cavalry at the end of the game, and I was using them effectively right up to the last turn.

I don't think our DoW against Germany was all that precarious, really. It was handy that Germany stayed away, but not all that surprising that early in the game, and I think we could have handled at least a few attackers. The DoW was so early that even the AI didn't have much of a military yet.

Feudalism was a big factor, too. Thanks for the suggestion, Optional. That was a very good call, and certainly helped give me a fresh perspective on a government I very seldom use. The government was perfect for our situation, and we never again came close to our unit support limits. War weariness was only a minor problem, and most of even that could have been avoided if we had made the decision just a few turns earlier than we did.

Honestly, I didn't think I'd be able to take 21 cities in the last 9 turns, but the hitting power of War Elephants and the speed of cavalry make for quite the juggernaut. It helped that we didn't have to face muskets. Pikes were just no match for us, and on the couple occasions we faced cities on hills, we had large stacks of cannons right there at the ready. The last set took approximately forever, but it was definitely a lot of fun.

I would Consider an OCC or a Space Race at Demigod

I was thinking of some kind of XCC game, as well. It would be fun to try the other extreme from hundreds of combats every set. Besides, I've never actually done a XCC. I was thinking of starting with 5CC, but I'd be willing to give OCC a shot.

Way to go Anax, you brought it home in style! Also, way to go team! We really kicked some butt. I am reassessing my disdain for Feudalism, in the right situation, it is the perfect government. I've started thinking of our next game also, and I agree that we need something different this time. We've done Space, Diplo, Domination and Conquest. 100K is just too much work and 20k is very much a finesse type thing, and hard to do above Monarch level. So a second run at space seems appealing. I've never done a 1CC game either, so I'd be willing to give that a try. Another idea I've tossed around for awhile would be called "Forgotten Governments", where Republic and Monarchy are off the table. When Feudalism is researched, we switch to it. When we get to the Industrial age, we must research Fascism (or Communism) and switch to it. Meanwhile, trying to win a chosen victory condition in a decent time. Maybe in the game after the next one. Any other team members, if there's a variant you'd like to try or a victory type, now is the time to comment. I'm officially opening the thread to brainstorming for our next game, and hopefully in a week or 2 we'll have something set up and ready to go. I will put Rodent low on the roster so hopefully he doesn't miss a round.

Just out of curiosity... why is there never a 10CC game? or a 7CC game. 7 being a number of completion would seem like a good choice.

it's just one of those things that make you go :hmm:

:mischief:

Whatever you choose I will be there as chief lurker and bottle washer.

I agree that we need something different this time. We've done Space, Diplo, Domination and Conquest. 100K is just too much work and 20k is very much a finesse type thing, and hard to do above Monarch level. So a second run at space seems appealing.
I understand your thinking. A note on 100K: you could make it less laborious by checking the box 'retain culture on capture' in the editor, and let the AI do most of the hard work for you.

I would like to thank you all for this SG. I believe I was the only real 'newbie' in the team, in the sense that it was my first SG. In this game I learnt about setting up a settler factory (thanks Thinktank) and I know more about war weariness now than I did before.
It was fun as well, so it tastes like more. If this team stays together, maybe the word 'newbie' in SGFN is not so applicable anymore. Of course we are hoping that a few new players will join, but it would be good if the next game was more challenging.
If you're opening up a brainstorming thread, Overseer, then I'm looking out for that!

Optional, I am more newbie than you. This has been my second SG while first is myth01 (still in late-medi. age). Most of you play so well, compared to me that.... ah whatever you know it urself !

If I get out of the hospital, and you guys can stand my blabbering then I'd like to be part of the team in next game too.

This series is open to anyone that has ever participated, so of course we'd be glad to have you back for round 6, Northen. I think the reason I'll keep the name is that I want it open to new members, I'd like to find another player or 2 interested in taking part. Anyway, I will get a brainstorming thread up soon to discuss what the next one.
