SGFN-08: Random AWM Succession Game

I wouldnt mind joining if you have a spot

Edit - let goodspell or Daeron take the spot not me, if people drop out I am happy to fill in later

But isn't it true that with an early UU you won't have much choice over when a GA is triggered anyway, since they are all replacements for something else?

Yes it is often the case. I would expect the Iroq could avoid it by using swords and archers at AWM. All I was saying is, the Germans have no option to get one very early. It was only an observation.

and Yeah as overseer already said, it would be nice and handy if any PRO dude will join this game to not let us/you sink in this game, since there are lot of players that haven't even played aw variant before . Me myself only played once Aw variant, and it's solo not SG . . i really like this variant and would like to join ya guys if there is a room for me and +1 PRO ;]

Waiting for your answer overSeer . . .

EDIT :
What about to delete all posts that aren't related to the SG itself ? I mean, all those suggestion talk before the SG starts, to make the thread a bit cleaner, and let it start from the first pages, and not 1-4 pages of discussion before even getting started .
just a suggestion, I'm an order psycho ^_^ .

Btw, CommandBob would you like to join us dude ?

My weekdays are packed, but any weekend day is fine. Mostly, I spend Fridays, Mondays, and sometimes Saturdays playing Civ 3.

I can play most evenings. However, I have school in the until 3:20. (but I do log on and post sometimes during school)

Oh, wow, Germany in an AW attempt.

:trouble:

:goodjob:

MIL (better chance of MGLs) and SCI (cheap libraries and a free tech at each age change); nice. The UU is late (Panzer) and probably won't be built, but that is a good thing. You'll win without having to depend on it.

I envy you guys!

Waiting for your answer overSeer .

You are in, which is why I left an open spot in my proposed roster. Oh, and del, I think you could definitely be a fill-in/replacement, I've had experience where an 8 person roster ends up 4. Heck, if things go well, I might just step back and watch the fun.

del62, be ready to replace me, because I'm a kinda unstable .
I serve in IDF, and there might be suprises that won't leave me any time for Civ, kind of stuff that isn't in my control . I hope nothing will happen and I'll keep being active as I am now, but I'll let you know few days before I'll "dissapear" .

Well, who's on deck ? OverSeer let teh fun begin, start your 10/20 turns . I prefer NOT to be first, and to play 10 turns instead of 20 to avoid some foolish mistakes .

By IDF I assume you mean Israeli Defense Forces.

If so then good job. :goodjob: :goodjob:

Especially in AW, playing only 10 turns form the start is pretty handy as a learning experience, since the AA play is so important.

Yeah I mean Israeli Defense Forces . and thanks .

Daeron, absolutely right, the most important progress period is AA .

So what are the basic tenets of an always war game? I imagine close city spacing and a more military focus is required (obviously), but what about things like tech trading? Does the Great Library become a necessity?

And when can we get this show on the road :) ?

Can I join?

Passover starts tonight, so I'd be a poor lead off, but I'd like to try my first SG

Edit: Oops, missed the second page. If there's a need, I'd be happy to be a sub/alternate or else wait for the next one.

lurker's comment: I'm far from being an AW expert, but I play enough of them to put chime in a little here. I would guess that our resident AW experts could win AW without the GLib, but I don't think I've ever done it, at least not at AWM or above. The GLib is huge in staying technologically competitive up to Education, particularly if you've drawn a pan map. You'll almost certainly go Monarchy, because any government with WW is really not an option. No Republic, so no commerce bonus. The GLib will let you build up a stockpile of gold for cash-rushing & upgrades. Other good early wonders (which may be obvious to all) are: Pyramids, GrWall, Sun Tzu's, and SoZ. If SGLs are off, & I assume they are, be very selective in which Wonders you build in the early game. Taking one good production city off-line when you've only got 10 cities is a big chunk of the empire.

Tech trading -- That depends on which variety of AW y'all have chosen. I've seen games where trading on initial contact is allowed & I've seen others where trading was prohibited altogether. I've also played both ways, and the former makes for an easier AA, particularly if I have the cash to build embassies. Knowing where someone's capital is can be very handy. At AW, you'll likely be at war with everyone on your landmass by the Middle Ages, so there won't be any trading after that, until you move on to the next landmass. While on this topic, I would also say this: be careful about exploring too much. In a standard epic game, it's a good idea to get some warriors or boats out scouting to make contacts. In AW, that just means finding new enemies. You'll have to DOW them on the first turn, but you don't have to go looking for trouble.

Tight city placement with a higher-than-usual emphasis on defense is also a good idea. You may have to give up a few shields here and there by settling on hills, but unit & city survival is more important. I have to play AW much more cautiously than a standard epic game. You'll need to try to keep every unit alive. That means: (1) walls; (2) raxes; (3) rock-throwers; and (4) no leaving units exposed. You'll have to resist the urge to kill off that redlined archer with your elite sword if it means that the eSword will be left undefended in the open.

Finally, armies, armies, armies. The short story: you can never have too many armies. Between AW and the Mil trait, you should get a decent number of MGLs. I would expect that you can get your first MGL, and first army, during the AA. At some point, you may want to use MGLs for the Heroic Epic, Forbidden Palace, Pentagon and, later, Mil Academy, but I'd certainly plan on using the first 2-3 for armies.

Hello Overseer,
what's the difficulty level? If it's higher than Monarch (and you still have a spot to fill) I might be interested to join. I've never played AW, but I have SG experience (played in SGOTM 14, same team as DWetzel )

Problem is: my schedule is pretty full for the next 1-2 weeks. I could play a very early turn-set, then pause a while and then play more or less regularly by mid of April.

And: I assume at the start of each turn-set there is a short discussion of the current situation and the next steps?

Lurker:

I would add that much of the cash will go for deficit research after the GLB dies, if you get it. The AA will go easier, if you build cats. Armies are the main way to take down towns, once you get past those newly planted towns. At least until cavs.

It is really important to keep that kill ratio high. This tends to mean not attacking with units that can be attacked on the IBT. Armies pretty much always will not be attacked, but that red lined sword you attacked with your archer better be out of reach for enemies.

To that point, workers need to be keep out of reach. This tends to be a bigger problem, once the AI has cavs. I would rather have them capture some cannons, than workers as I can probably get the cannons back. They will probably kill my native workers.

Lurker's comment: You could consider starting up 2 SG's, because with so many players you're gonna have some people dropping out simply because they're not getting involved enough, I mean, when will your turn be if you're number 8 on the list?
I was a newbie myself once, and I think especially a newbie is looking out to get a turn in, while a veteran will be more at ease with sitting back.

I am delighted at all the interest in this SG! I wouldn't mind doing a second one at the same time if I can find the time. If I had help from some of the other experienced lurkers here, we could have SG school this spring. Commandobob has chimed in above and was mentioned as a player. He has also ran some training SGs, and might be willing to run another. Buce, VMXA, Optional, Daeron, Aabraxan and Lanzelot are an awesome group to have around to help. So maybe do two at a time, the second could be Emperor for a higher challenge. As for the above discussion, the GLib is nearly a make-or-break proposition at higher levels of AW, so a pre-build is critical. Hopefully we never meet VMXAs Cavalry, as we will remember that using armies to pillage enemy resources is also critical.

Optional, You're kinda right . I'll consider starting a new SG of AW too . or 5CC what do you say fellas ? I kinda liked the idea of 5CChallenge .
