For the benefit of anyone lurking we met Biz in post #209. The palace was still in Kyoto and we started trading with him. We lost those trades when the palace was moved to new Japan.
Sweetacshon - you are right about not knowing the map shape but given we should have put a few scouts on the ring we would have put ourselves in a postion to meet all the AI sooner and realise the main wars would be on the ring. I always explore by land and sea in my own games and sure most of us do we just missed it in this one due to preoccupation with the other continent.
The world view screenie in post #227 shows our 2 ships boldy mapping the coast encircling Kyoto and no scouts on the ring looking for AI/open land
