SGOTM 02 - Fifth Element

We met Biz at about 300AD. I agree this idea might have worked, but we had no idea what the map was like. At the very least, we shouldve put a few scouts on the ring. You are right about New Japan tho, we went far too hard there... we should've gained a foothold on the ring far sooner.

For the benefit of anyone lurking we met Biz in post #209. The palace was still in Kyoto and we started trading with him. We lost those trades when the palace was moved to new Japan.

Sweetacshon - you are right about not knowing the map shape but given we should have put a few scouts on the ring we would have put ourselves in a postion to meet all the AI sooner and realise the main wars would be on the ring. I always explore by land and sea in my own games and sure most of us do we just missed it in this one due to preoccupation with the other continent.

The world view screenie in post #227 shows our 2 ships boldy mapping the coast encircling Kyoto and no scouts on the ring looking for AI/open land

You're right about scouts, but it's all hindsight.

I doubt there was some land to settle, and anyway it should be no more than a foothold.
Our production was good in New Japan, and i doubt we could find 3 or 4 sites with good production in the ring.

Probably we could avoid to move the Palace, waiting for the 6 courthouses, then the FP in New Japan.
Don't forget that former spanish cities were in good sites, for production, resources or gold, and that deal with barb macemen is not so easy.

I think we played a good game, don't forget the winning teams are composed by top players and staff members... as you said the team was at noble/prince level, i can consider myself monarch/emperor, but this game was completely different from an "usual" game.

Anyway ... we got fun, and we can try to do better next time ... we are on the top 5 teams, i suppose, and with 2 dream-teams it's not bad.

Thanks, Alan not only for your post, but for your work and your patience.

Thanks to Gyathaar and Alan.. always great work and most appreciated.

So, if anyone is still looking in here, it seems as tho Perugia doesn't want to go 'round again, so who is keen for #3, what version to use, and do we need any extra players?

At least 1 out of 4 post an answer ... i suppose this is your answer, Sweetacshon ... very pragmatic.

I'll edit this if and when the remaining members will post something.

1st edit (after Sweetacshon's #508)

it's exactly what i asked ... thanks
let's wait for the rest ...

2nd edit (after Merum's #509)

- agreed for the captain, what we need is a "spokesman" to talk with the Staff, nothing else.
- about the new member (or not), we can vote ... i abstain, but only if we are supposed to keep a good pace, otherwise we'll need another member.
- about warlords/vanilla: in addiction to my PM, (and against warlords), the russian UU is weakened in warlords (18 to 15 strenght) ... but i continue to abstain.
- no, i did not received PMs from you
- no, AFAIK we're not writing any spoiler ... volunteers?

Yeah, I got your pm Muz, but I thought I'd reply publicly, just to bump the thread.

I sent a response via the PM system, guess it didn't take. :???:

Anyway, too bad about Perugia, but I guess he's got other things to do.

We can either pick up another member, or let it go with the folks we have.

As far as "captaincy", frankly, I'm more in favor of the anarchist approach. We're all big boys here, and we know what to do.

By the way, are we going to submit any spoilers for SGOTM2?

I'm headed back to America tomorrow for the thanksgiving holiday, so will be incommunicado for a couple days.

Well that's 3.. Brian and DT to go. 5 is fine with me, but more would be ok too at this time of year with people having holidays and the like.

Too bad that Perugia will not be with us in SGOTM 3. But i think we have enough experience to finish this one too.

As i already said in sign up topic Vanilla or Warlords it doesnt matter for me.

I'm up for SGOTM3. I'm also okay with Merum's suggestion for anarchy, ahem consensus.

I like playing warlords better than vanilla, it's all i play now for solo games, but could live with either for the SGOTM. I agree that warlords is harder in 2.08. I've jumped back to prince for now in warlords as I got my a** handed to me at monarch.

great, all the team is here :)

then:
1) Warlords or vanilla?
2) Another member or not?

my votes:
1) vanilla (easiest, and better knew by all), but warlords is funniest
2) as told, 5 is good if we can keep a good pace, eventually swapping (as we already did)

as in a good democracy, i'll accept what the majority will decide (5 is perfect, parity is not possible).

no abstained, please.

can i put a deadline in 48 hours, to inform the Staff about our decision?

OK, if you agree i propose myself as the team spokesman, since i got time in these days ;)

my votes:

1) warlords (we'll be competing against the other warlord teams, right? so all will be disadvantaged similarly)

2) 5 is good

1. I haven't even tried 2.08 yet (or warlords much at all really - I just haven't had enough time for it since release), but that doesn't mean I'm not willing to try... I just wouldn't be much help strategically... possibly. Anyway, since I can't abstain, I'll jump in the deep end and say warlords.
2. 5 is fine, but I don't mind if we take in a stray - like I was last game ;)

Yep, Blubmuz, feel free to handle the official duties.

This is what i wrote to AlanH in SGotM3 sign-up thread:

@ AlanH

Fifth Element, after a poll in our SGotM2 thread, decided:

- we'll play Warlords (we think it's hardest than vanilla, but it's hardest for all)

- team formation:
Blubmuz
BrianS
Doom Train
Merum
Sweetacshon

- We are fine in 5, but if Perugia decides to join, we'll welcome him, or if you have some stray guy, feel free to ask, we can probably find room.
- We'll have no captain, i'll be the "spokesman"

from now on, we can start some pre-game discussion.

edit: no news in last 4 days ...
SGotM3 is now open, no more posts here.
