SGOTM 06 - Trash Team

No reaction from Stuge.... moving along.... cabert's up

Roster
- Remconius

- stuge (awol?)
- cabert (UP)
- patagonia (on deck)
- pigswill
- Cam_H

Are we in a hurry?
I can probably play tomorrow (:mischief: if I had seen this post earlier, I wouldn't have finished a marathon cultural this evening), but won't be sad if Stuge posts a got it before that.

Not in a hurry, but if people are not reacting you can spend days waiting. The game drags on, people lose interest, and we have trouble finishing on time.

Stuge always reacts quite fast, so I reckon he's probably busy or out. No problem, but lets move on.

Sorry for going awol. We changed our internet operator and it became a complete mess as per Murphy. I got just back online.

I won't be able to play until sunday so cabert should take it.

Good to have you back, Stuge!

You can play after cabert.

Let's review our position.

We are running mercantilism + representation + caste system.
We certainly aren't going to win by conquest in the next 100 turns.
(not a single boat available!)

I guess it's time to think about building settlers...

Its time to think about settling the island. It looks like Mali is down to one city in the north. Alex is around somewhere, probably offshore. We've had one amphib landing already, we're probably going to have a lot more so settling the interior seems to make sense. It might also be worth thinking about moving the palace to a more central location in the not too distant future.

Wow it's 1750AD already!
we're certainly not winning an award here.

this is a got it.
I may play later tonight or tomorrow, the game will be available to stuge before sunday in any case ;).

I checked the game and I'm really in doubt we can win by any means.
I mean :
1) we are at 22% land, have at best 20 other % available without intercontinental invasion but it would require a huge pile of boats we don't have, because cyrus has frigates running around our borders. So domination doesn't look good.
2) to go for conquest it's even worse, since we're fighting rifles with maces.
3) diplo? seems a bit hard. I can't see our enemies voting for us, but we could let them build the UN and just grow. Not totally undoable, but a bit far stretched.
4) Space? we don't even have gunpowder in 1750 AD. Not going to happen.
5) Time? Our enemies will fly away.

Well, maybe there is one award we can still win. :(

At least we're not dying yet.
Which is more than you can say about Mansa Musa.

Short report : Mansa Musa died, we didn't lose anything (except a few units) to cyrus.

turn by turn report :
1750AD :
IHT I move our mash unit up to the front.
I MM our cities to get gunpowder in 2 (at the price of some starvation in unhappy cities)
I pray all the gods I've heard of that cyrus' stack doesn't take athens.
1752 (turn 391) : Athens is still ours.
It was not really at stake, with 5 units in it and only for attacking, but I was worried we'd lose all the LBs.
We did lose 1, but the other killed a grenadier.
I move troops towards the north. Mansa has sent a settler party. I don't have the troops to take it out.
1754 : I finish cyrus' stack next to athens. Mace vs rifle at 99% odds + knights vs grenadier at 36% odds .
I let mansa's settler move and focus on the real city north.
Tech towards chemistry. (due in 17). Djenne is now happy at size 5.
1756 not much
1758 : still not much
1760 : I must have forgotten to play
1762 : I start bombing mansa's northern city.
I see his new city. It's on a hill, with 2 rifles in it, one has CG1.
I move an archer in the deep south looking for new orleans or some other city the greeks could have settled.
I start a settler.
IBT Mansa attacks my scouting stack with his CG1 rifle.
1764 : I won't let the rifle go home! I suicide a treb then kill the rifle with a spear. talk about behind in tech fighting :(.
bombing, moving
1766 : I finish the bombing of awdaghost. Next turn, you will see Mansa !
1768 adwaghost gets burned. I wanted to keep it, but there was a malian rifle next door,
and it would be stupid to give mansa an occasion to get his city back.
1770 : bad luck. I lose 3 units (not counting the catapult and the trebuchet that withdrew)
to the lone malian rifle defending the only malian city in sight...
1772 : no more mali.
This is where I stop.

a few things to know : we're down to 30% science. And anticipating more cities. That's why you'll see loads of markets started.

Good job eliminating Mansa.

From here on this game looks pretty straightforward. We simply have to pull off an economic miracle and tech to nukes, while relying on our "Grand stragedy" (did I spell that right? :mischief: ).

sounds about right.

Your builds should be :
- settlers
- markets
- courthouses
- Forbidden palace somewhere
and the teching should aim for boats after chemistry IMHO.
Do we want to go straight to combustion?

Straight to combustion sounds like a plan - the sooner we can protect our borders the better, although we'll need to unearth oil before that tech's any use to us, which means picking up paper to unlock printing press. Do we need astronomy to be able to build destroyers?

Cottage-spamming the centre of the continent makes sense to me; we're going to have to venture up the democracy path before long otherwise emancipation unhappiness will start to kill us.

The alternative (albeit cheap) way to win would be to tech biology, medicine and beeline mass media. Running up the culture slider and going into environmentalism means we only really need a granary and theatre in each new city to rapidly bump our pop up.

Good stuff!

If we do some exploration, we might be able to find weak spots in Cyrus' empire. If we all remember SGOTM2 when we took on a highly advanced Hatty (Infantry) by landing units (rifles/cannons) on forests/hills next to 5 major cities simultaneously and took them out in the next turn...

Stuge please rearrange Athens for extra growth... It can hold 1 extra pop and 2 with market.

For additional happiness lets get silver and beavers (makes all men happy ;)) on line. Then markets give 2 extra happiness (fur/ivory), forge also gives 2 (gold/silver) and Theatre gives 1 (dye).

We then mass farms and specialists and rush for biology.

Let's also convert to Christianity, switch to Organized Religion and build missionaries while in growth mode. This will help happiness, increase building speed, give easy culture and we have the church of nativity (income)!

Building mode ON! Stuge go ahead play 15-20 turns and grow the empire!

We're slowly crawling out of the economical hole. I suggest that, from now on, everyone notes our beaker output at the start and end of their turns. That'll be a simple measurement of our ecomnomy. The more the beakers increase, the better.

I took a three-turn anarchy by revolting to slavery, OR and christianity. Caste system is useful, but slavery is the cornerstone of getting an empire up to speed. Whip frequently in our new cities, aiming for two-pop whips while emphasizing growth and commerce.

I settled two cities just east of Corinth. Both are wonderful small cost-big returns deals. A third settler is sleeping in Carthage, having completed on the last turn. Send him to ex-Mali.

Some city signs were shifted around. We have a couple of sites with great potential, unfortunately they are buried in jungle. However, we souldn't shy away from them once we have used up the more accesible sites.

Chemistry and paper were discovered. ETA for PP is currently 15 turns. It should give our economy a big jolt.

Although the focus of the round was on infrastructure, York and Argos boosted our military by building knights and have now started grenadiers. There hasn't been a single landing, but most of our army is garrisoned in London, just in case. Some units have been scattered around for fogbusting.

Some notes:

-Nottingham makes a great missionary center. Keep pumping them; we still have many cities without christianity.

-I built two workboats for Carthage on the basis that all the AI ships are hanging on our west coast. Then a Greek trireme appeared from the north and pillaged both fishing nets. Build some triremes of our own, sink that sucker and restore those nets. Carthage is a great city but it needs those nets to fuel growth.

-Don't lose heart. The AI can be incredibly incompetent at winning the game and we still have 240 turns to win. Besides, the Grand stradegy is working so far. Just keep scanning the west coast for galleons and feeling neurotic.

-And remember, gentlemen. Micromanagement or death.

SAVE

Good work team.

I'm afraid I'm going to have to politely request a skip. I've had to send a faulty router off to the manufacturer and won't be able to pick this up again until the replacement one arrives.

I'll post an update here when that happens.

In terms of the economy, we probably want a handful of farms around all of our cities ready to fuel a growth boom. We'll then want an army of workers to replace them with cottages/workshops/watermills as we hit decent city sizes and state property. With the amount of land at our disposal (especially the relatively pillage-proof chunk in the centre of the continent), an emancipation-fuelled cottage boom will have a dramatic effect. It's probably best to rely on farms and specialists to get us there so that we've got the growth potential and population to make the most of the transition.

Roster
- Remconius
- chopster
- cabert
- stuge
- patagonia (skipped)
- pigswill (UP)
- Cam_H (on deck for Friday, let's see how many turnsets we can fit in...)

What we need is:
-Forbidden Palace (Djenne?)
-A horde of workers (another 20-25 total)
-Settlers

Power supply has died on my home pc, so I MAY need a skip for the next set if it comes around soon.

Sounds like we're improving on the economic front.

We may still be in with a chance for a victory.

Got it.

Had a quick look.

Changed Carthage to library because I see absolutely no point on wasting hammers on triremes or workboats.

Lots of settlers, workers, infrastructure and military and we need cities to grow a bit as well as whipping them. Its always war. We're a couple of eras behind the AIs techwise. Apart from that it's pretty straightforward.

Nil carborundum.

The point of the trireme in Carthage was that if we get rid of Alex's trireme, we could net the clams and fishes again, because the AIs seem to send most of their ships to our west coast, thus allowing Carthage to reach its full potential with the seafood.

But it's your call.
