FP argument seems to be a good one - will definitely take a closer look once it's done.

I may not bulb the GE - there's 18 turns to steel, and you say he'll bulb a quarter, so we can continue to discuss the GE option during and after my turnset and not lose anything if we still decide to use him in that manner.

I'll also spread Christianity to our last two cities without it.

EDIT: When I click on the GE, he says he'll bulb 1812 towards Replaceable Parts - so do we still want to use him that way? It would save 5-6 turns at our current tech rate.
Or is 3 HPT and 6 BPT in a city, say London, more profitable for the rest of the game?
 
Not really the start I was looking for - on my first turn, Saladin landed 5 Cavalry, a CR2 Cannon and a Rifle on the gold near York.

At the moment I don't think we can take the stack with what we have close by. I'm going to try and defend for one turn and see where we end up. There's no sense throwing all our units at the stack and not killing it and potentially losing London and York.

As gutted as I am, I'll play some more turns in the morning. (inside 12 hours)

I just wanted to let everyone know where we were at, and I thought it was a pretty critical point in the game so I stopped to see if anyone wanted to fire me!
 
I was in a similar situation last set (4 rifles, 3 grens, 2 cannon) and somehow survived it.

Its a matter of picking them off (and does come down to RNG).

Might be wise to move GE out of London just in case you're really unlucky.

So, despite the loss of York, with the FP and some stock exchanges coming on line we haven't taken much of a hit financially.

I think we need to continue concentrating on building a bit more military in order to not cut it so close with future invasions - we lost one city this time and I fear the landing may become more frequent and stronger.

I decided to start to build a few pikes in London - two pikes is 180 hammers vs a gren at 150 and two pikes vs one cavalry is superior in terms of results. Maintenance might not be as nice, but I wasn't invisaging having 30 of them or anything.

Obviously the economic side of things can always improve too.

Good stuff, chopster! Great to see we still have London! Any chance of getting York back?

My civ install is giving me trouble. I reinstalled warlords, but now I cant open the save anymore. Maybe I have to reinstall civ, warlords and BtS before it works... (good thing I was skipped)

I'm in the same boat as Remco - I ended up reinstalling and finding the game locked me out, but that was the previous (Pigswill's) turnset, so when I get back to my Civ computer next weekend, things could be different with a new game.

But my personal issues aside ... on the basis of the reports it sure seems that we just have to keep pumping out units and focus our commercial haul on a few inland cities. I'm not sure where we're at with that big jungle river between ourselves and Mali, but a couple of cottage spammed cities could be great seeing that the landings appear to be on the west coast. I must say that I'm wondering what Ragnar's been doing all this time!

Finally - chopster - this is just bad luck! I doubt that a carpenter's son from Bethlehem could have done much better with that invasion force! :jesus:

Unfortunately Saladin burned York, so no chance of getting it back without rebuilding.

Speaking of new cottage-spammed cities, I'd like to draw the team's attention to this thread.

There's an awful lot of maths in there that I've made no attempt to try and understand, but it basically boils down to the following:

New cities should work farms for the first 10 pop or so, adding cottages thereafter to ensure they're set up as quickly as possible for maximum commerce return. Transitioning to cottages can then take place as they reach the health/happy cap.
