SGOTM 06 - Trash Team

I'm up for some sort of re-try. In order to get better results, the focus must be on clearing the continent mucho faster.

I think we should have stayed in slavery the whole time. A captured high pop city can be whipped for more units when the resistance ends. This was used in the last SGOTM for good effect.

Good going guys!

Going down that is, but hey... what can you do...

We tried and failed, but let's do better next time...

Any word on a new game?

:thanx: for the game guys ... I'm sorry I hit the technical glitch and couldn't contribute.

I'm off to see The Pyramids this weekend ... yep ... literally ... check out the Valley of the Kings later next week and wave to Ramesses II!
:egypt:
Mrs. Cam and I are in desperate need of holidays, so Egypt and Prague it is for 17 days!

Cam: hope that you and your good (and long suffering (like all civfanatics')) wife have a great holiday :goodjob:.

Everyone, go sign up for the new SGOTM. It looks like horrible, masochistic fun. :D

Also, reaad the Murky Waters thread for this game. Such an awesome display of skill.

I've signed up, and I'm at page 11 of the Murky thread already - they sure know their stuff, and have already given me a few ideas I'd never even thought of before.

It took a long time, but... wow.

The next SGOTM looks interesting. My gut instinct in a game like that would be to go obsolete-wonderspam SSE, tech to mechs and destroy the world, but that's clearly not going to be a fast win.

Then again, hammer for hammer a stack of choks is probably the most powerful weapon in the game; the problem's going to be devising a way to start rolling up AIs without the others expanding into the space we create. As it is, everyone else is going to be limited to 2-3 cities before going to war.

In a deity game my instinct would be to try not to die in 30 seconds!
It's actually really fun starting up a game like this. Using a custom game, put 18 civs on a tiny continents map. Enter WB on turn 5/6 and giggle. I might play a practice game or 3 just to see how the AI handles the situation.

And check out the new avatar - Trash Team FTW!

Spoiler :

...not.

Once more into the breach... with wooden cutlery.

Got to play a few test games and try things out. I've got a couple of ideas...
Sucky ideas they may be but ideas nevertheless.

The Murkies played such a fine game. Astronomy before 100 AD and all enemies dead five hundred years after that. Although I'd say that there was quite some luck involved in taking Timbuktu with two warriors and one axe.

But hey, it's double or nothing like it should be.

If anyone builds a test map with a starting position like the one listed, I'd love to have a few hundred very short cracks at it. I also have a couple of ideas, although I have NO IDEA how they'll play out.

One thing that I am concerned about is that having never played a deity game, I'd be more focussed on trying NOT to LOSE, that I may put myself in a position where I would preclude myself from having any chance at victory. Of course I don't EXPECT to win a deity game, but I guess one must have a strategy for TRYING to win.

Love the avatar patagonia - I'd wear it with pride.

Well, the deity AI is still the CIV AI. It's not like we're facing Deep Blue in a game of chess. It's still that nerdy 12-year old from Yahoo! chess but this time he's using two queens.

I'll WB a test map once the new team threads are up, with copper on that plains tile 1N of the settler. Seriously, if there isn't copper there, our life expectancy will be very short since the AIs usually boast axes around 3000 BC.

I'd expect to see iron/oil somewhere within Beijing's radius, otherwise we'll be unable to build Choks and intercontinental warfare ain't going to be pretty.

I've been playing some OCC deity 18-civ tiny continents maps to see what sort of build dates we can expect for wonders and have yet to see a war break out super-early. Oracle's definitely out though - even if we went straight for it we wouldn't have researched priesthood in time (probably wouldn't have researched meditation/poly in time to be honest).

Just noticed that PA are on in this, which opens up a whole new direction.

Indeed, with PA on, winning seems to be easy.

Spoiler :
I'm currently fighting an infantry/artillery v longbow war on deity and I'm the one with the infantry...something's very odd about this.

What's going to be a challenge is working out a way of winning early, rather than simply winning.

I played a random crowded deity OCC yesterday, with nowhere near as good a start as that.

I had Izzy and Monty and Alex all around, so I wasn't working improved tiles for very much of the game.

However, my promoted LBs on the plains hill city were besting riflemen without much of a scratch - that combined with a super medic scout kept me alive for a LOT longer that I thought I'd last.

Can someone please explain the mechanics of permanent alliances to me?
I'll see what I can find.

EDIT: Here's a couple of good posts.

I also played a crowded tiny OCC.Some things I noticed:

You can more or less keep up with tech if you focus on non-preferred techs (MC, Machinery, drama, music, etc) and trade them around.
With so many AI there are always trading opportunities, however sometimes they would not trade because "I was getting too advanced" !?!

When I changed to Buddhism it helped and people started offering me free techs.

Happiness is a problem, but when I got the HR I could really grow and globe theater allowed infinte whipping which is great with a high food city. An all out farming strategy might be the way to go.

I teched upto Grenadiers, whipped a uni and oxford, etc and did alright until Julies started sending frigates with cats and grens, I survived but did have the coastal and land forces to get rid of him.

Personally I think it will be nearly impossible to win a conquest victory because every city we raze will be filled in fast by the other 16 AI.

Diplomatic should be possible, but is not easy managing relations with so many. Cultural maybe? never tried that with one city.
