SGOTM 06 - Trash Team

If stuge plays tonight/tomorrow am, I should be able to pick this up Sunday/Monday evening.

If the save's around and any of our "weekend warriors" want to jump in and play a set in between, that's fine with me. Just post here that you've grabbed the save and I'll wait until you've finished.

I'll aim to take Stuge's game for an Aussie Sunday morning turn set - I'll let you know if I can't play from Stuge's game.

I played nearly twenty turns of builder game.

Then Curys dropped off a present:

A turn later two grenadiers and two cannons landed one tile west.

I rallied the troops in London, whipped a couple of grenadiers, smacked the big stack with two cannons.

But there's only so much you can do against a cannon horde, as the AI very well knows.

Something like three-fourths of our army was just wiped out. We lost our capital, have no hope of reclaiming it and Curys has a foothold on our continent.

FUBAR

Bad luck stuge - I know just how you feel.
You mounted the best defence you could with the resources at your disposal, and that's all any of us could expect.

SO, what's the plan from here?

Do we build all out defence and try to delay the foregone conclusion for as long as possible, or do we "give up" and empty all our cities , throwing every unit we have at London and just allow the game to end with a little less pain?

 Sorry for being so utterly useless - I'm going to have to skip again. Internet connection problems (server side) ... I've just been able to get on and now don't have time to play this weekend.

good question
I'm not playing for a while, so this is just a "not too involved" opinion.
Let's call it a loss and stop here.
I don't see any fun in the next turns.

I'd be inclined to agree having just looked at the save.

We're 43 turns from being able to draft Redcoats at our current tech rate, by which point the AI will have comfortably reached industrialism for tanks based on Saladin having already built Broadway.

There's a chance we could retake London in the next set, but that's dependent on the Arabian ships by New York not dumping any more units on our shores, and would require heavily whipping and emptying nearby cities, which is probably only going to delay the inevitable.

Nice start for a trash game ;-)

Anyway, my pride is somewhat bruised... It seems we got our behinds kicked at Prince level.... Curious to see what the other teams did.

Do we give up or is there anyone that thinks we still have a shot?

Having just played out a few sets in ROTQM5 and seen that game go from almost hopeless to hopeless I'd reckon to cut our losses and collect that wooden spoon with due humility and humiliation.

AW is a very different beast to other games. I think we needed to secure our continent a fair bit earlier than we did to make this one winnable. It took us too long to reach the tipping point at which we could start rolling through the AI cities, but which time the other AIs who had been peacefully teching away in the fog were too advanced.

In a standard game, we would have been able to peacefully catch up before launching an overseas invasion, but there wasn't that breathing space here.

Looking on the bright side, at least we're in with a shot of winning something :D

I'd also suggest we may have considered our "super longbows" a little stronger than they may have been for city taking. Isn't hindsight grand?

I for one know that once we're done here, I'm going to have a shot at this game on my own, as I reckon with a slightly different approach we may have been able to start faster, and therefore be in a different situation.

I sure hope no-one sees the above as any kind of "shot" at them or the team as a whole, as I'm far from being in a position to take any of those!

I've certainly enjoyed this SG experience - even if it does end in a loss - and would certainly be happy to call you all my team mates for any future endeavours should you want me.

I also might have a go at a reload from start once we're officially done (being disqualified isn't a huge problem in the circumstances but it's still not really the done thing).

@chopster. Sorry the game didn't end in happier circumstances!

Captain, announce our resignment. There's a certain difference between perseverance and idiot stubborness.

Assuming it's allowed, would the team play out the early game again to see where we could have gotten with a simple axe rush?

I think we see some fair points.

Longbows are good, but not uber... especially in city taking.
There was more haste needed in securing our continent.
Also until the end we did not have enough info to decide on victory condition.

I'll pm AlanH and announce our demise... I'll let you know his response to whether we can see other threads and replay the game.

All in all it was once again a fun experience. I really like this format and look forward to the next one (and a little more success...)

Sorry to hear that you are retiring. In case it affects your decision, please note that the Wooden Spoons only go to teams who finish - win or lose. I'll wait for a final word before closing your database record.

If you still want to declare a resignation, feel free to visit the other threads, but only post in the ones that have finished. There's no problem replaying the game once you have finished or resigned.

Thanks for the comment, Alan.

I didnt realize we had to finish the game to "win" the wooden spoon.

I propose we continue playing, doing what we can, large turnsets (25+ turns), until it's over.

Who's with me?

Roster
- Remconius
- chopster
- cabert
- stuge (emerged from pile of dung, go take a shower...)
- patagonia (ready for some serious sh*t?)
- pigswill (get your shovel ready)
- Cam_H

We could go kamikazi, delete all our defenders, whip everywhere so our cities reduce even further and aim for a fast defeat. We could see if we could at least lose properly.

Or instead....

We could forfeit the wooden spoon (do we really want to win it?), retire and play a parallel game a la trash mode from the starting save.
