SGOTM 16 - U'nu'sual S'us'pec'ts

I can't see us conquering an AI on the other continent, purely for financial reasons, but you never know.

Had a quick look at the save.
- Clams should not build a temple, but a courthouse first. I misread LH as CH on the PPP.
- whip the trireme? gets decent overflow into Harbor

Also, production should run an engineer rather than the forested grassland. We should start planning how we are going to get our great people for corps from this point because later on, it gets harder to get our specific great people due to the increased pollution cost of people. Sushi obviously requires a merchant which we can get via Caste (or economics) and Pacifism. But mining inc will be a great asset to us via building wealth and that requires the harder to attain great engineer. We also want the Culture cities to have the culture corps which require a GA if I remember correctly.

Agree on whip trireme :)

I was looking at the save, and I have to say, I think we may not need monarchy at all this game (Fingers crossed!)! Our happy cap is amazing so far and will only increase! :)

Yeah, I do think conquering Brennus and Ramesses first makes complete sense. :) However, with this game, you never know.

Also, now that we know a bit more about the +4 fair trade bonus, once we meet all the other AI, we could probably just gift them everything that doesn't lead to Lib to get them up to date. As a result, the fair trade bonus will not decay for a very long time because of us giving so many techs. (Gifting SB 20 gold right now would actually get him to +4 for FT this turn  )

The fact that he has construction is good, as the more AI that have a tech, the more likely they are to trade it, unless they are SB that is.
I think this only applies to tech knowledge that they know about. i.e. SB won't care that Brennus knows it and likewise Brennus wont give us a better deal becasue SB knows it. However, SB knowledge implies most of his neighbors will know it. (which is probably what neil meant).
I share the general disdain for The Chief. He's usually backwards, so can't read much into his lack of techs.

A Great Merchant for Sushi is relatively easy to get, apart from that we only want a GE for Mining Inc.

We are running an engineer in GP Farm, and will have another in Production, apart from that there isn't too much we can do for now. Once we get into the Industrial techs we can add more Engineers.

Once in Caste, GP Farm can run a lot of Merchants/Scientists to get the great people we need. Once we have Sushi, GP Farm will probably be running 15-20 specialists.

As you say, gifting the AI on the other continent almost any tech will get us to +4 fair trading.

I want to choose an AI to be friendly with, and we don't care about the rest. As long as they open borders to give us the +4 trade routes. Ideally we will choose an AI that is not always demanding that we stop trading with the others.

@ Construction, yes that is what I meant. If SB has it, the others almost certainly will as well, and someone will trade it (or we have Brennus).

Plan Updates:

Clams: CH

GPFarm: Whip Trireme and bring Tri3 over to help. The Barb galley is now C1. Argh.

Prod: Thinking it is better to grow into a Eng Spec in 2 turns rather than switch tiles now, but i am open.

Spy - Land in SB land and begin to scout.

No trading or OB with SB until we meet more AI.

I will not play in the next 12 hours so any other input is appreciated.

Yes, make sure to check every turn in all cities with a courthouse we're not running any spy specialists. I hate those guys.

GPFarm: Whip Trireme and bring Tri3 over to help. The Barb galley is now C1. Argh.

Sounds like a plan. The barb galley will get sunk, no worries. "RAMMING SPEED". Also, assuming both of the triremes make it out okay, go explore the icy islands to the northeast of Paris. I'm curious.

Prod: Thinking it is better to grow into a Eng Spec in 2 turns rather than switch tiles now, but i am open.

This is always a tough decision for me and I usually end up favoring growth. So I slightly favor grow first then run the spec. But I've never verified for which situations this is best.

Spy - Land in SB land and begin to scout.
yep

No trading or OB with SB until we meet more AI.
agree

OK, this is all fine with me, agree with benginal regarding spies. Try to have a galley attack the trireme, and then run back to gp farm to heal

Between one and two do not have Mining or the Wheel: American - Lincoln, American - Roosevelt, American - Washington, Aztec - Montezuma, Celtic - Boudica, Celtic - Brennus, Dutch - Willem van Oranje, Greek - Alexander, Greek - Pericles, Holy Roman - Charlemagne, Incan - Huayna Capac, Native American - Sitting Bull, Persian - Cyrus, Persian - Darius, Spanish - Isabella, Viking - Ragnar, Zulu - Shaka

So, we have Brennus and Sitting Bull. This means that all the rest of the above are eliminated from possible AI list.

I think this is a nice summary of Sitting Bull rather than having to go to the XML code

Luckily, he cares very little for religion.

Anion's BTS manual has a great, easy-to-read synopsis of each leader (and lots more good information) to save you from digging in XML files.

Here's the section for Sitting Bull, for example:

If we open borders with Sitting Bull before we meet any other AI, are we still "on the hook" for "you traded with our worst enemy?" I seem to remember if they don't see you make the trade, you don't get the malus.

Spy - Land in SB land and begin to scout.
Is our spy in any more danger of getting caught in SB land then some other civ?

TMIT complained mightily about AIs objecting to trades that they couldn't have known about. I don't recall the specifics.

Will need to hand off at this point. Down to a smart phone until at least Sunday.

Alrighty. I might be up next? I'm available to post a PPP in about 18 hours and then play on Sunday/Monday, which should line us up nicely for Revent's takeover on the 7th. Sound good?

Sounds good to me too. I will update the roster after work. Thanks SH and Benginal.

Thanks for playing at all! With the storm and all that.

@ trading with enemies
If SB is anyones worst enemy, then we will get the malus, even if we haven't met the others yet.

No point getting OB before Astro anyway, which is still 5 or 6 turns away IIRC.
Both Caravel and spy don't need OB to go inside territory.

Question.
Our caravel has a missionary inside it. We want to spread the religion to another AI on the other continent. We have no open borders with this AI and do not plan to open them. Can we land this caravel inside their coastal city and gift the missionary to them whilst it is still inside the ship?

Yes, takeover on the 7th would be ideal! :)

No, the AI would simply go exploring with the Caravel.

The exception to this is if the Caravel is injured, in that case the AI will put it inside a city to heal, and the missionary would get off.

I'd also like to suggest turning tile yields on whilst exploring the ocean :) It'll point us to land!
