SGOTM 16 - U'nu'sual S'us'pec'ts

Shall we pause a while to let you catch up ;)

I will attempt a long term city plan sometime today.

Firstly, some assumptions:
- the game will only go for another ~60-80 turns
- we probably aren't going into Emancipation
- if it isn't already a hamlet, or about to be, its not worth working
- workers should workshop everything and windmill hills, especially in our core area
- Most population growth should go into specialists, mainly scientists or merchants

Sushi spread order: Production, Heliopolis, Commerce, Thebes, Barb City, GP Farm, Zhou, Paris, everywhere else.

I have re-uploaded the save with a whole bunch of little micro changes.
Summary is: FP being built in Pi-Ramesses, another sushi exec in bibracte.....

Paris
Ahhhh, Paris. This is a Science and possible Legendary city.

Build order:
- christian temple
- theatre
- confused cathedral
- christian cathedral
- grocer

Specialists: scientists, to leverage the Academy

Spoiler :
Civ4ScreenShot0114.jpg

GP Farm
This is obviously our GP Farm and possible Legendary city. It needs to work its mines to finish the important culture multipliers and have a few workshops built (as they are better than mines). As soon as the last cathedral is built, it should only work the 3 food tiles, and every other pop should be an artist

Build order:
- theatre
- christian temple
- edit: buddhist stupa..... can't believe I missed this :hammer2:
- confused temple (needs the missionary currently in West Fish)
- confused cathedral
- christian cathedral
- grocer/market (slow built)

Specialists: artists, to produce culture bombing artists

Spoiler :
Civ4ScreenShot0115.jpg

Production
This is a hammer city.

Build order:
- work boat (for Clams)
- theatre
- Sushi execs...... for the next ~20-30 turns.
- factory
- coal plant

Specialists: engineers/merchants

Spoiler :
Civ4ScreenShot0117.jpg

Commerce
This is THE science city.
It must build a levee as fast as possible, as nearly every tile it has is a river tile. Once it has the levee, we do not want to work the hills ever again

Build order:
- research (for 1 turn)
- levee (work both mines)
- sushi execs, about 2-3
- grocer
- colosseum
- hospital
- laboratory

Specialists: scientists

Spoiler :
Civ4ScreenShot0118.jpg

Clams
This is a generic city. Decent hammers, decent commerce.

Build order:
- edit: settler, for the 3 seafood spot in the south islands
- edit: 3 workboats for the southern islands
- theatre
- custom house
- factory
- coal plant
- grocer

Specialists: scientists

Spoiler :
Civ4ScreenShot0119.jpg

Barb City
This is a hammer/food city. It requires a watermill and a few workshops to be built

Build order:
- research (1 turn)
- levee
- factory
- Sushi execs...... for the next ~20-30 turns.
- coal plant

Specialists: engineers/scientists

Spoiler :
Civ4ScreenShot0084.jpg

Zhou
This is a hammer monster city.

Build order:
- finish grocer
- custom house
- factory
- Sushi execs, for all of the island cities.
- coal plant

Specialists: engineers/merchants

Spoiler :
Civ4ScreenShot0085.jpg

Bibracte
This is a generic monster city.

Build order:
- sushi exec (for Heliopolis)
- levee
- wall st
- more sushi execs, as required
- factory

Specialists: merchants, to leverage Wall St

Spoiler :
Civ4ScreenShot0120.jpg

Heliopolis
This is another generic monster city, and Legendary candidate

Build order:
- library
- levee
- sushi exec, for Thebes
- confused temple
- sushi execs, about 4-5 more
- theatre
- factory
- coal plant
- cathedrals/wonders

Specialists: merchants

Spoiler :
Civ4ScreenShot0101.jpg

Thebes
This is yet another generic monster city, and Legendary candidate

Build order:
- bank
- levee
- confused temple
- christian temple
- sushi execs, about 4-5
- factory
- theatre
- salon
- cathedrals/wonders

Specialists: merchants

Spoiler :
Civ4ScreenShot0102.jpg

At most, if we want a Laurel - correct!
- we probably aren't going into Emancipation
- if it isn't already a hamlet, or about to be, its not worth working

Yes!

ASAP

First off - awesome work:goodjob:

Second, I think either Thebe or Helios but not both should focus on culture the other on Sci or Cash. Also want the Buddhist cathedral (Stupa) in our culture cities. Paris has one, but should be GPFarm and one of the others (Thebes/Helios).

Third, I have a question regarding GPFarm. If we think culture is now the limiting factor, I agree we should be running artist specialist. If we think beakers is the limiting factor, we should be producing GMs and sending on trade missions. The artist are valuable at the end, the GMs are relatively more valuable now.

Ideally we would send GMs on trade missions until the latest point, until we need nothing but artists to coincide with completion of FT1. Obviously easier said than done because we don't know what trades will occur.

Fourth, if you go as far as to put turn estimates on the city builds in the culture cities. I have started a spreadsheet that I would be happy to share to estimate turn/total culture.

Separately, should we have a discussion on defensive pacts for diplo with Qin and Hammy?

And do we like the idea of keeping Al-Razi for a golden age?

Great analysis, neil. I haven't looked at the save (no accidentally moving warriors), but Paris is not on the Sushi list, and Sid's has not been spread there yet. Shouldn't it?

Edit: x-post with SH.

And do we like the idea of keeping Al-Razi for a golden age?

I would rather use him to help bulb Physics, and then use the GS from Physics for a Golden Age.

@ GP Farm
D'oh, I have added the Stupa to GP Farm, plain stupidity missed this.
I like running purely artists now, for culture bombs, we don't want to take any chances on the 2 Legendary city requirement, and we would rather do it without using the slider. If we do have spare GA's, then they can go into golden ages.

@ heliopolis & thebes
It is a great point, as one can just build all of the sushi execs we need, the other can focus on Culture. Heliopolois for hammers/execs and Thebes for Culture?
Both need some workshops built on plains tiles.

@ defensive pacts
I don't think we really want defensive pacts, they hurt diplo with the others, and I don't think we need them at all. We now have all of the permanent positive diplo bonuses we need to keep both Qin & Hammy at Friendly. Only Qin can DoW at pleased, none of the others can.
We also don't know what craziness could start on the other hemisphere, we don't want to be dragged into any wars.

@ Great People
Golden Ages or Corps. We still need 2 corps, and it would be nice to keep the GS in our pocket. If we found 2 more corps, then we can use him on a golden age.

edit: Little cities should concentrate on getting us the temples required to build the cathedrals

edit2: and I don't know if anyone noticed, Orleans in the middle of our empire is jewish. So once CR is finished, first change will be to Slavery/OR to whip all of the cities and several Jewish missionaries.

Good luck Deckhand with those 26 workers. I've chopped most of the forests.
No problem. I'm not very good at chopping all my forests anyway. :(

OK, I have downloaded and opened this save.

I hope to post a PPP tomorrow. I can play Friday or Saturday. Hopefully Friday with chance to pause and continue Saturday.

I got an unexpected work assignment today - I will be traveling (without Civ) again - from 12/9-20.

Bummer, at least you should have time to get a reasonably full set in before you go. :)

I also discovered that I am going to Paris on Saturday for 2 weeks, but at least I will have my work laptop, with Civ installed of course.

^ LOL, I too will have my work laptop
Spoiler :
with no games allowed or installed

I'm only traveling cross country, you are traveling around the world!

PPP preview: attack barbarian galley with galleon#3.

Luckily I am a software engineer, so I need full admin rights to my laptop. I'm not sure if installing Civ is allowed or not. :mischief:

I leave my home town and arrive in Paris 30 hours later  at least it's business class. :)
Its 95F here, and it will be 40 when I get off. Yay! Somewhere in between would be nice.

Last week I was in Arizona. Now I will be going from California to Pennsylvania.
I flew business class to Australia once, I wouldn't want to travel that far any other way.

I've only been to the US once, and by coincidence I visited both California & Pennsylvania, among a few other states.

California seemed fairly normal, but Pennsylvania was quite odd.
Driving 30 miles feels like going to a different planet.

Flying Quantas? Used to be a pretty good business class service years ago.

One of my cousin's kids (well, hardly a kid anymore. She is an MD) is working in Brisbane. She is having trouble getting used to Christmas in the middle of summer.

Flying with etihad, and their business class is awesome.

Christmas should be hot, cold christmases are weird. :)
It works very well, as christmas is in the first week of the summer break. You get all your presents and 6 weeks to play with them.
My kids have just posted letters to Santa asking for a trampoline, the postal service here will respond to them with a letter from santa.
