Shacknews Civ 5 review: No save games in multiplayer?

No animations in multiplayer was an intentional design choice, to help speed up multiplayer. It's possible that there will be an option to have them in a future patch; I'll check this.

Thanks for checking. Please ask them to bring it back as an option, many of us play with friends primarily and we like the shiny animations. :)

i am seeing them adding it on a later date just not sure on how long it will take them.

if they are going to launch expansions they will definitely add that.

time will tell.

Combat animations are terrible; I mean really, they can ruin a game in the hands of the right noob.

I guess it wouldn't be impossible to have it as a host option so that once the game launches it cannot be changed, but that's just 1 extra thing to check for in staging which I think is mostly unnecessary.

How it is implemented in civ 4 though is completely unacceptable.

Not having simultaneous turns is also lame :p But again, I can see that it's not completely impossible to have it as an option in staging.

Thanks for these info, auto-save is not a big problem... But I'd realy like to know if you have changed your mind about sequential turn in multiplayer. Is it realy only simultaneous turn now?

Preview had said differently and this is a very big deal for me...

You have got to be mistaken, they wouldn't be stupid enough to make it simultaneous turns only, simultaneous turns suck.

See Page 2, but I guess you just mixed that up :)

Right now, only simultaneous multiplayer is supported. Turn-based play may come in the future, as we plan on expanding the multiplayer options with patches.

Having no Animations in online MP games makes sense.

Not giving the player the options to turn them on for LAN games with friends etc. , where time isn't much of an issue, not.

So while i wont cancel my preorder, I'm hoping this will be adressed quickly in the next patch, else see no reason to buy additional copys.

That guy was clearly making that up, no way firaxis would destroy multiplayer like that.

Well, the author of the review at http://www.shacknews.com/onearticle.x/65623 corrected it already regarding the save option. But he keeps saying
Multiplayer is currently limited to simultaneous turns,

So even if the mail-quote is fake, looking back on the confusion which was already here before (and due to which I created the thread http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?p=9613692) I'd assume that it's indeed the case, that turn based MP is out of the game for now.

This doesn't bother me much. What really bothers me is that I don't have any friends. :(

See Page 2, but I guess you just mixed that up :)

I was responding to the person(s) complaining about simultaneous being the only available mode. I meant that to be a hypothetical; so, not having simultaneous turns WOULD be lame.

Again, sorry for my ambiguous language. :(

This is from the manual PDF that 2k Greg posted:

A multiplayer game is a “simultaneous turns game.” In this style of game, you and your opponents
take their turns simultaneously. Everybody moves units, conducts diplomacy, maintains
their cities all at the same time. When everybody’s done everything they want to do, the turn
ends and another begins. You can use a Turn Timer when playing in this format as well.
Simultaneous Turns games can be a whole lot of fun, but they’re not for everybody.

So I don't think there's any doubt now.

Animations only add a couple extra seconds so removing them completely from multiplayer is just stupid.

Well, it's not "stupid". But it should be done globally by the hoster's settings.

What they are doing is basically "protecting" "non-professional" players who might have this feature on and will get a huge disadvantage by having that while playing against someone who disabled them.

In addition it might be because of synch issues. Meaning that you bascially play an RTS game. A game in which for everyone everything needs to be in the same place. Talking about SC2: If the enemy could destroy a unit or building and it would not display for you this would be huge and the game out of synch (not happening). Everything happens "right now" when it is done. If one PC has graphical issues he slows down the whole game. And this would probably be needed in Civ5 when someone has animations while the other player hasnt.

Very disappointed in this but will (hopefully) still enjoy a vast amount of hours using simultaneous moves like we did in Civ 4!

*facepalm*

I hope animations are added back soon :( (as an option atleast)

What is it with designers and enforcing streamlined multiplayer these days. :(

We arent all super competitive SC2 players, some of us just like to play with friends.

It's not really an issue of protecting. Noobs aren't at a greater disadvantage when they have combat animations because it freezes other players that don't have combat animations. So, at least in Civ 4 it was more an issue for the non-noobs than the noobs.

Enforcing? How about listening to the majority of multiplayers...
