“Thank you for the warm welcome. I stand before you as the new Prime Minister of Canada”

Another hearty round of applause cuts him off.

Mister Layton Smiles as he continues, “Today I have been given the noble and humble task of leading the people of Canada so far as they let me. I asked for your votes on a platform of peace and social prosperity. I will do my best to fulfill these promises and will work to pass legislation that benefits the people of Canada.”

“Afghanistan and the Middle East have been in the forefront of our minds. My heart and prayers go out to our brave soldiers abroad. And to thank them for the sacrifice they have given to their country I will immediately begin to slowly return troops to Canada.” Amid clapping “This will take time! Our allies need us at this time and this is why I will pledge a portion of our spending to the U.K. led rebuilding project. And as I promised I will help increase the education system of Canada so every child has a chance to succeed.” More cheers.

The Prime Minister continues on with a few other social reforms as well as thanking his family and constituents. He finally bids the country good night and leaves the podium.

"A New Scientific Revolution": An Interview with Michael Laine, Founder of the LiftPort Group

LUXEMBOURG CITY: We caught up with Michael Laine in the Luxembourg City headquarters of the LiftPort Group for a brief conversation. The LiftPort Group, a private corporation devoted to the construction of a "space elevator," has been the talk of the city since the surprise announcement last October that it was relocating here from the USA.

What, exactly, is a space elevator, and why is it useful?

A space elevator is a ribbon stretched from the surface of the earth to a counterweight in space. It is in what we call geosynchronous orbit, meaning that the cable will not move relative to the earth's surface. Objects and people will be able to be lifted up and down the cable into orbit and back again.

Quite simply, the space elevator has the potential to launch a new scientific revolution. It would reduce the cost of sending payloads into space by a factor of 50, from around 34,000 Euros per kilogram to less than 700 Euros per kilogram. This would make it much cheaper to send satellites into space, greatly increasing the quality of telecommunications service. A nearly limitless source of clean energy would become available, as large solar arrays could collect power in orbit and beam it back to earth. And pharmaceuticals would improve, since centrifuges would not be limited by gravity. Finally, the space elevator would serve as a gateway to the solar system. Instead of having to launch probes and rockets with most of their bulk taken up by fuel, we could assemble spacecraft in space and propel them with a fraction of the energy.

How is it possible to build a cable strong enough for a space elevator?

For a long time, no one thought it was possible. But then, in 1991, carbon nanotubes, a substance over 100 times stronger than steel, were discovered. They are easily strong enough for the cable--in fact, the cable would only have to be a few centimeters wide. This particular aspect of the space elevator is extremely exciting, since it mixes nanotechnology with astrophysics. We're very close to being able to mass produce nanotubes on a large scale.

If a space elevator is built, won't it be a target for a terrorist attack?

It's important to know that we plan to build more than one space elevator. Once the first one is built, it will be much cheaper to build a second, and then even more. Also, space elevators will be isolated--we plan to build the first one in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. As a result, relatively few casualties will result from an attack. Finally, it's nearly impossible for the terrorists to break a cable more than 15 kilometers above the Earth's surface. And the cable itself will continue to orbit, in the same position as before, since it is anchored from space. It will not break up or crash to the ground. It would be extremely easy to reconnect the cable by slightly lowering the counterweight in orbit. So a terrorist attack is both unlikely and ineffective.

Why did you move LiftPort to Luxembourg?

We were made an offer by the government that we couldn't refuse. NASA had just drastically slashed our funding, forcing us to push back our goal date for the completion of a space elevator. On the other hand, the ESA has greatly increased funding, and they're more open to the idea of a space elevator. We were attracted to Luxembourg in particular because they have some of the best materials scientists in the world. We've been partnering with the steel companies to develop our nanotube furnace, which we hope to complete soon. Finally, (laughs), the free high-speed internet didn't hurt!

Thank you for your time.

Thank you.

OOC: You're making it very hard not to blast you factually.

OOC: You're making it very hard not to blast you factually.
I'm fairly sure this actually happened. And even if it didn't, it's certainly possible, even probable.

It's definitely not that big a stretch compared to any of the things other players, including you, have been doing.

OOC: Well, it's more your repeated flaunting of bribing an American company, and a contractor to a federal agency, no less, into departing with all its research and data, without leaving a damn thing. That'd be the equivilent of China managing to "persuade" General Dynamics to come to China with free internet and Ferraris and suddenly gaining the ability to build Abrams tanks and F-16s.

I am not happy, IC or OOC at this, however plausible or even likely it might be, simply because it was all done behind my back, and I will make my displeasure known. Luxembourg should definitely not anticipate any Shuttle or ISS slots anytime soon.

Press Release: May 25, 2008

John Agyekum Kufuor has named Togan politican Harry Olympio as his Vice-Presidential candidate for the elections, which will take place on December 7. Kufuor is temporarily unavailable for comment (OOC: more coming tomorrow when I can think straight)

Symph, who is looking to be in the Presidential Elections?

I second the question I've been meaning to ask for a while- just who have you picked?

OFFICAL ANNOUNCEMENT

Due to Gelions inactivity and the fact I simply not seen him one bit, Stormbringer has agreed to take his place as the new Russian Federation.

TO: The United States of America
FROM: The Republic of France
SUBJECT: Expansion of International Forces in Afghanistan

The Republic of France wishes to inform the United States that it will expand its contingent currently operating in Afghanistan with an additional 20,000 troops. These forces will be placed under the control of International commanders and are to be used at the discretion of the commander in the field. We believe the struggle against Islamic fundamentalism to be an essential one, and we continue to support our American allies in their endeavors.

(OOC: Yes that means this is before the last Press Statement)

Earlier today my talks with President Hu Jintao concluded, I am happy to say, well. These Olympics have offered a time for talks and discussion on the world we face today. Germany faces many problems, as does China in fact the world shares this fact. From Terror, to the Environment, to our next steps as a race mankind as a whole faces these problems together. And so I am proud to announce several agreements that have been made with the Chinese Government. Firstly we are to address the ever present issue of climate change, with the research done by the EU and ourselves in the coming future we will assist China in stepping towards cleaner energy and ourselves through this. To further our peoples relations we will be opening trade with the Chinese to a greater extent. China’s economy is swiftly growing and coupled with Germany both our nations will prosper. The threat of terror grows daily and as such German scientists and engineers will work alongside Chinese to update and upgrade each others military forces, the world as we know it is evolving and we will evolve to face it, together. To better help our nations face threats both inside and out our intelligence sharing will also be stepped up. Finally the German government is pleased to announce to its friends at the ESA and Europe in general that China has agreed to assist our Space program. With their knowledge and expertise together we will step into the future well before our critics have estimated.

Germany looks forward to strengthening our relationship further with China in the years to come. As together our nations will be strong.

It's a private company. I'm doing nothing of the sort. I can drop the reference to NASA, if it makes you happy, but I don't really understand why you're so annoyed at this rather than say, a completely inplausable Canadian president?

OOC: Maybe he wanted secretly to build that elevator...

OOC: I'm fairly certain it would have quite a high degree of difficulty, building a lift into orbit in secret. I think it's more that he doesn't want anyone else to do it, haha.
