Shiro's Unit work thread

There's a theory, no evidences like all the others, that says that the Ark was taken from Jerusalem to Elefantina (spell?) at the time of the Babylonian conquest to avoid the Babs take it, and later on from there to Axum when came troubles between the Jews and Egyptians. There was an important Jewish community in Ethiopia, that's why some thougth that Saba was there.

Angola has been engaged in a civil war for most of the last fifty years between three major factions only one of which is/was Communist. None of the three major factions: Movimento Popular de Libertação de Angola (MPLA), Frente Nacional de Libertação de Angola (FNLA), or the União Nacional para a Independência Total de Angola (UNITA), has ever had the support of all the people or occupied the entire country. Also entering into the mix at various times were the armies of Cuba and South Africa, Western mercenaries, and intelligence agents/provocateurs from the major powers. Fighting still continues.

How about Angolan Mercenary as a UU? Give him a bush hat, short sleeve shirt and sub-machine gun.

With regard to the Hawaiian unit, I would make his gourd helmet a little larger.

A good book to read about the whole Ethiopian/Ark thing that also mentions the monolithic churches is The Sign & The Seal by Graham Hancock. Prior to the Nag Hamadi discoveries the most complete early gnostic texts were found in Ethiopia.

Ah SOG, you need to play my scenario a bit more if you want to know about Ethiopian monuments!

The rock churches of Lalibela are often called the eighth wonder of the world. Although, admittedly, so are a lot of things.

I LOVE the 'Ethiopian' musketman! :) It's perfect, although I think it fits Kanem-Bornu at least as well as Ethiopia.

As for the 4 most important civs, I think you can group them a little to get...

For sure:

ETHIOPIA, it was both a great power and a center of culture

MALI, given that it was preceded by Ghana and followed by Songhai in the same region and with similar traditions in the western Sudan

Probably:

NUBIA, with its immensely long history and culture (and a great rival for Ethiopia - I'd be tempted to group them with Ethiopia in a way, but they looked toward Egypt and Ethiopia looked toward Arabia in cultural and political matters so they actually make a great contrast)

and then your pick of:

KANEM-BORNU, which was a regional power and one of the first states to adopt Islam. It had a continuous political history of close to a thousand years and around 1600 was the greatest power in Africa (which makes this musketman a beautiful unit for them:devil: ) Not well known to the west because of its location dead center in Africa but traded and exchanged embassies with the Ottoman Turks. OR...

The SWAHILI cities, a rich trading community with an Islamic culture but predominantly African in population and character (and a great SEAFARING candidate in CIV3 by the way)

I also considered

KONGO* for its fascinating history (adoption of Christianity and western culture) and several western African civs, but settled on those above due to their duration and political, economic, and cultural influence.

*P.S. 'Kongo' in this instance is most closely associated with the area and peoples of modern Angola

The Zulu have one of the best unique units in the Impi, but were a regional power for only a short time with little economic or cultural influence - hence I dropped them to put in other civs. BUT the 4th spot is pretty open, and a Bantu culture would be good to include, and none of the first three are - so I'd say include them as BANTU rather than just the Zulus and you have a really legit civ!

Well, the Kanem-Bornu unit would preferably be a musketman with higher attack (although this sounds very familiar - I usually change the musketeer though anyway).

As for an African musketman, I can't find an ideal pic - you're covering a lot of cultures there, but the most representative would be without headgear, in loose shorts to the knee with a plain shirt either with long, loose sleeves (the best look I think) or sleeveless entirely.

OR add a sleeveless tunic to about mid thigh over the shirt and with a belt(this would be best with short sleeves I think)...

OR add a sash or blanket over one shoulder rather than the Tunic.

Just an idea here, but I think the best progression from musketeer to rifleman would be to have the tunic with belt for the musketman and shirt with long sleeves with blanket or ammo pouch slung across the body for the rifleman.

Musketmen went threw several stages, Wheelock(like the civ3 guy), Matchlock(Then Minutemen and Redcoats) and finally Napolianic Era Flintlocks, which in turn evolved into Rifles. I always had a desire to partially simulate this with a unit in between the two, Musket and Rifleman.

Matchlock preceded Wheel-lock, if I'm not mistaken.

My generic early firearm line would go:

Hand Cannoneer (AoK), Arquebusier (Vanilla Musketman), Musketeer (use the French UU graphic), Line Infantry (two C3C Napoleonic units to choose from), Fusilier (that "advanced" C3C Napoleonic guy), then the Rifleman (Vanilla unit) and further into the 20th century... (roughly follows a Medieval--Renaissance--17th Century--Napoleonic--19th century--WWI sort of historical order)

As you can see we included the Line Infantry between Musketmen and Riflemen.

 Yeah, I should have mentioned that I scavenged my gunpowder of of yours, Kal-El! I don't recall the date of this pic you posted, but I did save it to my files and used it for inspiration:
