I read everyone's comments. I like Larkin's science plans, but I feel we are under so much cultural pressure already, that I don't want to do anything to slow builds. I see a lot of MM in my future

Work forest in Cattaraugus for one turn to gain a shield at the expense of a beaker. Change Mauch Chunk as suggested. Salamanca hires a scientist, only at the expense of growth; ETA on lit goes from 11 turns to 10. Oil Springs hires scientist, but I'll get an MP there soon. Niagara Falls also hires a scientist. Science up to 90% and literature is due in 8 turns now.
Take the loan suggested by I. Larkin: Spain gives us 28g for 2gpt. France has no money for now. We have 90g and are running -23gpt.
IT
Lots of Japanese troops mill about.
Salamanca: Mounted Warrior > Mounted Warrior
1) 975BC
France has 16g; get it for 1gpt.
IT
The Japanese move a worker into our territory. They keep moving troops in a pretty aggressive pattern. France asks our dingy to leave their waters.
Allegheny: Mounted Warrior > Mounted Warrior
Cattaraugus, Niagara Falls and Grand River grow.
2) 950BC
Niagara Falls gets another scientist. Scientist in Oil Springs fired. Get another 16g from France for 1gpt.
IT
The Japanese worker starts roading in our territory. A spear moves in, probably just on its way through. The archers that were coming towards us before, have stopped.
Niagara Falls: Mounted Warrior > Mounted Warrior
Cattaraugus: Barracks > Spearman
Oil Springs grows.
3) 925BC
Start a chop at St. Regis. We're about to go over our unit support, so I decide to use the settler we have now to found a filler town. Literature will be in in 5 turns, we can build an extra settler out of Niagara Falls after that without losing production.
IT
The Japanese seem to be moving their attackers towards Spain.
Tonawanda grows.
4) 900BC
Take another loan from the French. We have 40g and are running -27gpt. Japan has contact with Persia.
IT
A Japanese spear moves into our territory again. Their worker finishes a road for us.
Salamanca: Mounted Warrior > Spearman
The Japanese acquire Mathematics.
5) 875BC
Take another loan from the French; this could be the last one. We have 29g and are running -29gpt. Literature is due in 2 turns. The Japanese don't know the Russians. I cut a Japanese supply road in neutral territory.
IT
Still some Japanese spears in our territory, among them 3 on our furs. There are a lot of troops around.
Grand River: Settler > Settler
Oil Springs: Barracks > Spearman
Mauch Chunk: Worker > Worker
6) 850BC

Persia and France have literature now. Trade value to Japan will be smaller now. Joan has gone medieval.
Found Centralia on the blue dot between Cattaraugus and Oil Springs, start barracks.
Science down to 0%. Literature due next turn.
Move 9 MWs into place near Satsuma. We have 3 MWs at Niagara falls. There is one near Grand River waiting in place to cut another supply road segment in neutral territory to slow reinforcements.
IT
Literature comes in. Spain also gets it, but Japan still doesn't have it.
Salamanca: Spearman > Spearman
Niagara Falls: Mounted Warrior > Spearman
7) 825BC
First thing I do is to cut the supply road and move our MW back into our territory.
Here's an overview of the trade situation:
When I offer literature, Japan is doubtful to offer math, close to offer philo, and insulted to offer map making.
I sweeten the deal a bit and get this:
If I had thrown in horses and some more gpt, I could also have gotten Philosophy, but we simply aren't ready for war just yet. I wanted to take what we could get before the Japanese got Literature from someone else.
I set research to currency at 10%. We'll get back a lot of gpt from the French in a couple of turns.
Mauch Chunk and Centralia switch to catapults.
IT
Allegheny: Mounted Warrior > Spearman
Cattaraugus: Spearman > Spearman
8) 800BC
A little reconnaissance:
IT
A Spanish horseman appears.
Salamanca: Spearman > Mounted Warrior
Niagara Falls: Spearman > Spearman
9) 775BC
Just moving around a bit. Turn up research.
IT
Nothing...
10) 750BC
Turn down research.
I don't think we could have gotten Literature any faster without seriously hampering growth and/or production. We were just 2 turns late to discover it. We'll just have to fight our way up.
Handoff notes
- The Japanese worker north of Satsuma will finish roading next turn.
- I think we need a few more spears, then we're ready to go.
- There are a lot of Japanese troops in the west, I saw them parading past our borders. Keep some troops of ours over there.
- Cattaraugus river gets in the way, hence the worker in place to build an additional road. I have a bad feeling about our ability to defend Mauch Chunk.
- At size 7 and during GA, Salamanca will be able to do 2 turn MWs, so let it grow.
- I put an MW in Allegheny to deter the Spanish from sneak attacking us.
