SKNES: Architecture of Aggression

Following the assassination of Emperor Heraclius II by agents of Aquitaine, there were two claimants to the throne. The Emperor's son, Josephus, was only six years old, and unready to assume the throne. As he was unable to effectively govern, a military regency was declared, and Rome was now ruled by General Titus Belisarius. This general came from a peasant background, rising to his rank through the Tagmata. General Belisarius was fiercely loyal to the Emperor's, and vowed revenge for the murder of the Empire. This war was now personal.

Not all were content with the rule of the Empire coming under a man of common ancestry, and thus a second claimant rose, Constantine, the head of a cadet branch of the Hellenic Dynasty. Though this house had long converted to Orthodoxy, it still challenged the right of the Angoran Dynasty to rule over all Rome, and it's leaders were the Angoran Dynasties main political rivals through all it's existence.

Constantine only angered General Belisarius when he claimed that he should be crowned Emperor, and he fled to Angora for his life. Though it is unknown how he managed to win the support of the Angoran nobility, they supported Constantine's claims and most of Anatolia succeeded from Constantinople. In an odd twist of fate, the Emperor's of Angora now ruled from Constantinople and the Emperor's of Constantinople now ruled from Angora. After this split, other portions of the Empire took advantage of the split and succeeded from the Empire.

However, this did not change the situation in Constantinople, and as Josephus grew, his thoughts grew identical to General Belisarius, and he too grew to hate the Catholic faith and vowed to destroy the Great Satanist in Rome and his false church. This way of thinking spread through the entire nobility, and it became obvious that there could never be peace again until the Rome was Roman again, free from the Satanists and murderers.

Now, as the regency has ended and Emperor Josephus has gained complete control of the nation, he stands ready to lead Rome out of darkness and destroy those who have come against it. The Empire will not rest until it is victorious.

OOC: Rome is a confusing topic, I refer to the pope as the "Great Satanist in Rome" yet I refer to my realms as Rome. Deal with it.

EDIT: As this goes, I could do whatever I want. I can convert to Orthodoxy or Islam or Forn Sithr with no *real* consequences. I could declare war on the HRE. I could go and massacre people I don't like.

But I don't do that.

Why? First off, because Aquitaine is NOT the kind of nation to do that. Second off, I tend to roleplay my nations at least semi-realistically.

Your Emperor was killed by a conspiracy that was started by Aquitaine money-and supported with native hands. He was ended by the hand of your second highest-ranked general. There are at least dozens who are in the plan-family, food tasters, guardsmen, cooks, ect. What are the implications for IRL? What are the implications in the real life world of SKNES?

Then again, being crazy I suppose is the correct interpretation of all things not Catholic, then. Although Forn Sithr, Barcelona/Badajoz/Magreb(I understand their reasons, that's why) and Eastern Europians are doing rather well. :p I merely RESPECT the game world and all the things that it entails.

Now, back to sitting on my high throne on the top of the world.

EDITEDIT: I know that the point of NESing is to have fun. I guess I get my fun from role playing semi-accurately after the first few turns, while everyone else just wants to kill Catholics for their fun. In that case, I hope you choke on your fun. :p

EDITEDITEDIT: What I find REALLY suspicious is that the Muslims did not take advantage of Savag moving most of his troops in the First Crusade away from anatolia. In real life, moving just 3 "Legions" to fight the Bulgars led to a mass invasion and the establishment of the Seljuk Sultanate of Rum.

EDITEDITEDITEDIT: Even more suspicious is how the Muslims are working together. In real life the Shiites and Sunnis even avoided working together during the Crusades- more often they enlisted Catholics against each other than joined together to fight Catholics.

EDITEDITEDITEDITEDIT: Of course, I guess real life has no say here. It has be slaughtered, butchered, and resewn together in a new form which makes us happy. :) I guess I am just ranting because I'm "losing". Not sure you can really lose when you are having fun.
 
For the record, SK, Carthage is missing its sections about religion and religious minorities.

Also there is exactly one case of Shias and Sunnis working together in this NES, and that is Fatamids working with the Sunnis in both teh war against Axum and the resulting Crusade. In both cases it was against the Christians, so it makes some sense that they'd put their differences aside for the time being.

OOC: Haven't gotten the PM yet, but at any rate I think I know why and am fine with the order being redacted since they were sent before I learnt that Barcelona is cushy with the Basque Catholics. Just too bad I didn't finish the project instead, but at least my upkeep didn't go up. Time to work on our civil projects then and start violating our faith with massive nation to nation usury!

I'd like to say that was the result of the early stages of the NES, when I was still struggling to figure out the best way to mod this. I'm not trying to cover up my mistakes, but I will use this as an example of what I think I can do better, and I will ensure that things like this will happen in the final stages of this NES and in part 2.
 
Emperor Josephus and King Tigranes V of Armenia emerged on the balcony of the Imperial Palace in Constantinople, to face a huge crowd that had gathered to hear some news. Silence swept over the masses as the Emperor began to speak.

"Today I bring you glorious news for the future of the Roman Empire. Even today, as the False Emperor claims our nation from safety in Angora, as the Hellenists attempt to threaten our way of life, and the western heretics continues to defile the name of Christ, the Empire will not back down. We will prosper, because we are right in the eyes of God. It is with great pleasure that I announce that the our ally, the Kingdom of Armenia, has agreed to join our glorious Empire. We stand united with our brethren in Armenia, and the armies of Satan will be destroyed."

Armenia is now our vassal, and any attack on them is an attack on the Roman Empire as a whole.

OOC: I think the primary reason for a lack of attacks in Anatolia is the fact that the Roman Empire turned to Hellenism on the first update, and the Roman Empire and Zengid Emirate have been friends for practically the entire NES. Perhaps this puts things in a better perspective. Basically, Amon and TLK struck a deal so that it wouldn't happen in the first place. At this time I think all the Muslim nations were PC that bordered Anatolia.

OOC: Planned to write a story after the invasion so I could write in the level of success, turns out I should have written it first for it to make sense.

"Why have you not obeyed my orders!" Idris the II's voice thundered and echoed through the warroom, the two guards present stiffened.
"Emir... you ordered us to attack an ally!" the Marshal of the Emirate of Barcelona attempted to look his father in the eye, he had never yelled at him like this before, but the Prince knew what he had done was right.
"Tahir, do you not remember the refusal of their King to wed his daughters to our dynasty? How his daughters spurned you and your brothers at the feast?"
"That is hardly reason for... war!"
"I grow old Tahir, yet even my eldest son is made of milk. These hardy women may yet lead to a proper brood of grandchildren, and the fairest one shall now be mine rather than yours. Guards! Arrest this child and place him under house arrest!"
Tahir struggled more bravely than the King had expected, yet in the end he was brought to the ground by the heavy-set guards with a sickening snap of some bone and was dragged out whimpering, indistinct curses under his breath. The Emir let out a dry laugh in the desolate chamber.

It was a few months later that Idris II rode out the gates of Barcelona, a grand army at his back and his newly appointed Marshal, the Grand Imam, at his side.
"I pray that our neighbors will not know of this in time. And that if they do they will understand our plight to unify the north..." the Emir said, now that events had come to pass a doubt had crept into his voice and chilled his heart. They shall have all the trade they want if they will only let me fulfill my dreams, he thought with desperation.
"Allah's will be done" Imam Walid replied thoughtfully after the silence. "If we fall by the hands of the faithful his voice will speak to the Caliph once Barcelona is under his control."
Idris gazed at the Marshal darkly. "Pray for our success Marshal. Pray that we live to see this new dawn. Have you not told me of the glory of fulfilling his will!?"
"Whether as the Marshal, Grand Imam, or the smallest, most pitiful of his flock as but a living sacrifice... I will cherish the fate that he bestows upon his servant" the Imam replied, gazing up at the morning sun, his left hand filtering in the light.
"His will be done." Idris intoned from behind gritted teeth.

OOC: The whole point of the Holy Roman Empire is to recreate the Western Roman Empire, so even if we're at war, it makes no sense to not recognize the Eastern Empire is legitimate. Unless you're recognizing the dude in Angora.
