SKNES: Architecture of Aggression

Well maybe if you fought the Byzantines when they went pagan and denied them their only source of Pitch, thus preventing them from using greek fire!

Besides, it wasn't that we're good at defending Rome. It's that your attempt to take it SUCKED.

Actually, I have to agree with Charles, here. That was NOT the best designed plan. you were too obviously waffling... and then trying WAY too hard to get into rome.

The best part. If you never warned us at all, we would have been busy building monuments for the glory of Catholicism and the Holy Roman Empire instead of recruiting troops and sending them to Italy.

Do I get brownie points for managing to actually take land of Amon, who I gather is some kind of NESing ultimate evil? :p

I'll send orders tomorrow, if you'll still have them. I'll have only a small amount of time for orders and stuff this coming week though. I'm being trained at my job to be an important guy, and that takes up alot of time.

Being important is hard.

Let Rome fall ^^ and the pagan storm will win the day... Sad.

I sent orders, since the update hasn't been done I am expecting they'll be accepted.

Hopefully I'll be able to keep up with this, during the next week.

Good luck! Or else we will face the wrath of Catnarok!

Update 6: Imperium and Dominion (900 AD/282 AH)

The North

In a similar vein to the Catholic Holy Roman Empire, the nations following the faith of Forn Siðr united under one banner – that of the Dominion of Midgard. While the union has been somewhat successful and is serving its purpose, many royal advisors in Britain are decrying it as simply a fluke for Jutland to gain control of Britain. The administrative stress of managing the Dominion has taken its toll as well.

(Jutland: -Stability)

Nevertheless, Jutland consolidated its newfound power. It retreated from its holdings on the Frankish side of the Rhine, and began working on colonizing more and more of Iceland and Scandinavia. The Iceland colony has begun to thrive, despite the utter lack of a good resource for trading. In Scandinavia, the Dominion began further establishing roots. In the east, Novgorod’s control expanded. The tribal days of most of Scandinavia were nearing an end. Novgorod itself completed a grand port to the west of the capital, and established itself firmly as a center of trade for the Baltic, and the port of choice for trade with the tribes of the east and south.
(Jutland, Novgorod: +Economy)

Jutland completed its temple library, and was elevated to one of the highest levels of scholarship in the western world. Although the Kammerat system continued, most Catholics had fled for Holy Rome or Thuringia, and there were few other minorities to enforce it on. Word of one other achievement emanated from Jutland – a jar of Greek fire had been replicated. This was received with shock when the news arrived in Constantinople – the Byzantines’ secret weapon was no longer secret.

One of the Dominion’s constituent states, the former Celtic nation of Brythonia, finally finished the Forn Siðr conquest of southern Britain. Although fighting in the area was hard and bloody, the Catavellauni were crushed by the superior and larger Brythonian armies.

Casualties
Brythonia: 3 Swordsman Companies, 3 Irregular Companies, 2 Crossbow Companies, +Economy
Catavalu: Existence

Although the Dominion was strong, its influence did not extend to the uncivilized lands of Scotland. That changed when one king united Scotland under his sword in Edinburgh. Brythonian and Jorvikian efforts to expand influence into Scotland all failed, and now the Scots are preparing to march to war.

War in western France kicked off with a renewed holy war – the beleaguered Castilian forces along the coast under attack from the French forces in the north and Aquitainian in the south. Raids followed by a direct attack from French forces that drove the Castilians out of Brittany. In the south, the reconquest of Bordeaux was even quicker, as a massive siege was all it took. A lesser lord was placed in charge of the city after the siege was over, and Aquitaine had begun the process of becoming feudal.

Casualties
Aquitaine: 1 Crossbowman, 1 Swordsman, -> Feudal Monarchy
Castile: 5 Crossbowmen, 1 Royal Swordsman
Franks: 2 Swordsmen, 1 Visigothic Legionary

The Mediterranean

Castile, already facing defeat in France, faced a new challenge at home – the Basques. They were forced to call troops home to defend the homeland as Catholic Basques, having secretly been trained by Aquitaine, rose up. The Basques received great support, even from Muslims feeling neglected by a warmongering Castilian king. Supported by Aquitaine, the Basques were able to overthrow Castile in a bloody civil war. However, Badajoz, aided by the bulk of the Castilian Royal Swordsmen, invaded to restore the rightful king. War has reached the center of al-Andalus, too.

Casualties
Aquitaine: 1 Visigothic Legionary, 1 Catholic Knight, 2 Irregulars, 1 Swordsman, 1 Siege
Badajoz: 5 Irregulars, 4 Swordsmen, 1 Horseman
Castile -> Basqueland

In Provence, the stalemated struggle between Aquitaine and the Caliphate continued. Despite a Maghreb attempt with cavalry to feint the Aquitainians and take the Rhone Valley, due to greater numbers Aquitaine prevailed. It appears that the Maghrebs will now have a very long-term presence in Provence, and permanent defenses are already being planned out.
Casualties
Aquitaine: 1 Swordsman, 1 Crossbow, 1 Horseman
Maghrebs: 2 Horsemen

The Vandals invaded Corsica with a massive army. The small Venetian garrison on the island, although it fought gallantly and inflicted heavy casualties. Near-constant fighting had devastated the island however, and the few people that did live on Corsica anymore were worth little to the invaders.

But that was not the Vandals’ final plan. They attempted to invade the Electorate of Pisa. However, their troops so used to raiding were near-useless in attacking well-protected fortresses – and when the Vandals attempted to take the heavily fortified lands in Italy, they ran straight into a wall of crossbow fire. Although they did succeed in a number of places, the arrival of Venetian reinforcements finished the Vandal invaders off and drove them back to the sea. The defeat was not helped by the fact that the Vandal fleet was decimated by attacks from the fledgling Pisan navy supplemented with a number of Venetian cypri-dromons. The Vandals retreated to Corsica, albeit with some wealth “taken” from coastal settlements, and the victory only served to even more firmly plant the Holy Roman Empire’s presence in Italy.

Casualties
Vandals: 5 Swordsman Companies, 2 Horseman Companies, 1 Vandal Raider, 3 Galley Groups, +Economy, +2 Plunder
Pisa: 3 Crossbow Companies, 3 Swordsman Companies, 2 Galley Groups, -Economy
Venice: 2 Crossbow Companies, 1 Marinas, -Economy

The new Avar regime in Naples was quickly threatened as a French-Venetian force with the aim of restoring the Elector of Naples to the throne. The Avars hastily built fortifications but it was too late, and with the Byzantines and Angorans invading Sicily there was little that could be done. The Avar crossbowmen defended gallantly, but in the end, they were crushed.
Casualties
Avar Naples: Existence
France: 2 Galley Groups, 5 Levies, 1 Swordsman
Venice: 2 Marinas

The Byzantine army invading Sicily was quite possibly the largest force ever assembled in centuries. Sicily’s already-grim situation looked even worse once it was revealed that the Byzantines would allow local lords greater power – and many jumped ship and rebelled. While there was fewer uprisings than the Byzantines would have hoped, it was still enough to distract the Sicilians. A massive naval battle, followed by intense land fighting, inflicted heavy casualties on both sides, but in the end the Byzantines won. Feudal lords took power under fealty to the Emperor, although most remained Orthodox. Little changed in Sicily.
Casualties
Sicily: Existence
Byzantium: 3 Dromons, 2 Fire Triremes, 2 Swordsmen, 4 Irregulars, 2 Avars
Angora: 1 Dromon, 2 Irregulars, 2 Swordsmen

The province of Southern Apulia came under the direct demesne of the Duke of Taman, and therefore part of the realm of the King of Armenia. Taman tried to spread Orthodoxy from its enclave on Skye, but attempts to do so were opposed by the new King of Scotland.
(Taman: +Stability)

Despite the fact that the Fatimids retained control over their caliphate, Axum was rising again, and they seemed to want nothing less than the reconquest of Egypt for Christianity. Axum sent soldiers to reconquer the Nile and Red Sea coast. A number of Zengid soldiers who were overseeing rebuilding efforts from the rebellion were caught in the crossfire. The Axumites, using greater numbers, were able to advance up the Nile. The Fatimids have been forced to move their court from Cairo to Alexandria under threat of increased raids. In Axum, although a tax was placed on those who were not Coptic Christian, the overabundance of Muslims in the new lands has placed a burden on the country.
Casualties
Axum: 1 Galley Group, 6 Irregular Companies, 1 Swordsman Company, +Economy, -Stability
Fatimids: 2 Galley Groups, 5 Irregular Companies, 4 Swordsman Companies, 2 Horseman Companies, -Economy, -Stability
Zengids: 1 Swordsman Company

The East

The Uyghur Khaganate, facing massive internal pressure and nonexistent leadership, collapsed into a thousand shards. Hormuz capitalized on the collapse, and established control over a number of the remnant chiefdoms. However, further military expansion was stopped by a palace coup. Afraid that the nation was not doing enough to protect against the Gupta “threat,” a powerful clan of Turkish sheiks seized control of the emirate, declaring it a Sultanate.

(Hormuz: +Economy, -Stability, -> Ghaznavid Sultanate)

The Guptas continued their campaign into Oman. Despite the fact that Yemen attacked in defense of the Omani imam, the fast-moving Indian armies tore through both armies. In the end, the Imam of Yemen, unwilling to fight a losing war, did nothing but accept Hindu supremacy over the Imamate of Oman – something which did not go well among the temporal sheiks of Yemen. The sheiks, much as they did in Hormuz, took power, and established the Qasimid Sultanate, dividing the land amongst them in a feudal manner. The Sharif of Hijaz protested, but few others – Yemen was irrelevant as it was anyway.

Casualties
Guptas: 4 Swordsman Companies, 1 Galley Group, +Economy, -Stability
Oman: Existence
Yemen: 4 Swordsman Companies, 2 Horseman Companies, 1 Galley Group, -Stability, -> Feudal Monarchy

The Zengid Emirate brutally expanded into the Arabian interior, disregarding protests from the Sharif of Hijaz. Although there has been little boon so far from what appears to be mere desert, with the exception of a new, if dangerous, route to Baghdad, the race between the two countries is on. Hijazi soldiers have begun to seize and raid Zengid-funded caravans, and have used knowledge gained from captured caravaneers to blaze their own route to Baghdad. War appears imminent, only stopped by the fact that the Zengids have a far larger army than Hijaz, and Hijaz wishes to preserve independence. At home, the Zengid kings funded the development of a small mining industry, mostly producing copper and iron, and continued to fund the growth of universities and learning institutions.
(Abbasids: +Economy)
(Hijaz: +Economy, +1 Plunder)
(Zengids: +Economy)

The Abbasid Caliph completed its grandest fruit yet – a great library, known as the House of Wisdom. At the heart of Baghdad it stood, eclipsing the madaressahs of Aleppo, Barcelona, and Cordoba. Learning blossomed in Baghdad. Although the collections found in places such as Aleppo were larger, the Caliphs mean to change that. The Caliph has promised to show the newer Caliphate in the west who the true Caliph of Dar al-Islam is.

OOC:
Everyone: just to clarify, Upkeep is not taken out of your economy, you must pay separately. Also note that this is only a recommended number, you can pay more or less, it will impact your strength in combat. Paying less can cause some soldiers to desert, but it can be done.

Also, I am reworking the literacy system – literacy will now be a lot more difficult to increase in larger amounts, and there will be far fewer random increases.

I have removed the pointless “Early” from Novgorod’s “Early Feudal Monarchy,” nobody has to go through that stage to reach feudal status.

If you weren’t included in the writeup, stuff still happened, just it was pointless to write about it. Consider what you tried to do successful.

Julius Gandi I believe was the only non-sender.

TheLizardKing: I wasn’t sure which Caliphate to send your soldiers to, I sent them to the Fatimids as they were in more urgent need of them. Also, some quick research (I may be wrong here) showed me that your part of the world isn’t particularly rich in raw materials for mining. I did what I could though.

Lokki242: I can’t recall if I approved Armenia’s UU or not, but if I didn’t do so already, I do approve it. Also, Azerbaijan is already under your control, so I’m not quite sure what you meant there.

Bair_The_Normal: Apologies, which wall were you referring to? Tell me, then I’ll make the necessary changes to your stats.

<nuke>: Name change confirmed.

Mickzter97: Feel free to rejoin. I do enjoy having both of you in this NES.

mythmonster2: You can either switch countries, or keep Sicily (its mostly intact)

Amon Savag: You got a few extra Avar Companies from those fleeing Naples.
