SKNES: Architecture of Aggression

Hopefully they don't involve needing other nation's permission to invade me.

Jutland and the Dominion of Midgard declare neutrality in this war. We will not let any army, Christian or Muslim, through our lands and seas.
(Not that anyone was actually going to go up that far north, but ah well)

While the deadline was today, I'm not starting work on the update until tomorrow, so you still have plenty of time to send orders. But get them in!

OOC: I've studied the rules set and found and read all the Iberia-portions of the updates and skimmed through the rest of the news. I've sent in a set of orders for the Emirate of Barcelona in case it isn't too late in the day to do so. :)

Orders sent; hopefully I'll be three-prong attacked again.

I'm going away until perhaps Monday, so for the sake of making diplomacy easier

From: The Zengid Sultanate
To: The Cowering Christian Tribals

No, we do not accept your surrender. Your crimes against Islam and your own Orthodox Christians is far too much for us to even contemplate forgiving.

Etc. etc.

Welcome my brother!!

OOC: I hope you roleplay it well. Barcelona has long grown wealthy by staying nuetral in Muslim-Catholic conflicts, and there is a special Basqueland/Barcelona/Aquitaine/Maghreb trade alliance/cartel/agreement going on right now.
However, if you want them to go crazy/to war go ahead. :). Just write a story about it like Amon or MusicLord.
Welcome to NESing!

Welcome to NESing!

Welcome my brother!!

Thanks guys!

I've already sent in orders though, and I knew Barcelona was supposed to be tolerant, commercial and on good terms with its muslim neighbors, but I didn't know I had a cartel agreement with the Basque Kingdom...

I'll write a story conforming to the result. ;)

OOC: It was update 8 I believe, when peace was declared. Basqueland handed over some land, and the Pyrenees became an open trading zone-> +++economy for everyone.

I've been traveling for work this week, so I am a little behind on all my games here. I'll get orders to you today!

OOC: @SK I will be gone for the next 3 weeks, so can you NPC me 'till I return?

Yeah. I got your outline for the next few turns so it'll be reserved for you when you get back.

EDIT: A few notes:
I'll be on AIM the entire time I'm updating, if anyone has questions or something. Actually, me being on AIM is a sign that I'm probably working on the update.
I'm not doing the whole list/VM thing due to the nature of this turn's war orders, and also because I can't think of anyone that didn't send orders.

Update 10: Entropy (970 AD/358 AH)

All across the known world, the story everywhere was one of chaos, of collapse, of warfare, as nations collapsed, and the usual business of people dying painful deaths went on…well, as usual. Nothing really new there. Probably somebody was watching from somewhere else laughing evilly. The world may never know…

Back on Earth, the entry of the Orthodox alliance, led by the Roman Empire, into the war quashed some Catholics’ hopes – they could hope to beat one enemy, but the thought of facing two, especially if one was a number of fellow Christians, was sickening. Adding to the Empire’s internal woes was the death of the last of the Imperial royal line of France. The debate over who would succeed quickly became a deadlock, and an attempt at voting failed to produce a viable result.

The Second Great Crusade, Stage II

The Muslim armies invaded the ill-defended Catholic holdings in North Africa. A few Frenchmen tried to stand behind and defend. It was a noble effort, but alas it was to no avail as the human wave of Muslim soldiers crossed the border from Egypt andcrushed any Catholic resistance south of Carthage. The Maghrebs quickly invaded from the west, aided by Berber tribes in the area, and Carthage was soon surrounded. Within the ruins of Carthage itself, there was intense combat and hand-to-hand fighting. Despite differences in religion, it was the Fatimid armies who truly impressed with their determined fighting, taking fewer casualties than anyone else. The successor to the Vandal line of sultans returned from Egypt with his army, re-establishing the Vandalic Sultanate and swearing to rebuild the once-great nation.

The Western Mediterranean quickly turned into a quagmire for sailors as ships from all sides clashed. Naval battles ensued of a size not seen since Salamis. Some of the largest were seen off the south coast of Aquitaine, as a Muslim armada came dangerously close to Christian shores, so close that villagers and townsfolk on the coast could see the battles unfold before their very eyes. Nevertheless, the Christians were able to hold the Muslim fleet off, albeit at great cost.

The Pope received a scare as the Maghrebs attempted to land within a stone’s throw of Rome itself. The Maghrebs were able to make headway several miles inland before a joint Papal-Aquitainian force met them at the gates of Rome itself. The battle was fierce and bloody for both sides, but in the end the Catholics were able to fight the Maghrebs back to the sea. Much of the Maghreb navy was lost. The cost to the Catholics was no better.

The brief fighting in central Italy was followed by operations against existing Orthodox holdings in the peninsula, notably Sicily and the Tamanic holdings in Apulia. The small garrison defending Apulia was not nearly enough to hold off the Catholics and they knew it. There was little fighting, followed by a full Orthodox retreat from the peninsula. The invasion of Sicily, however, went wrong. The Sicilians had holed themselves up in forts all along the coast, making a landing difficult – any attempt to get forces onto the island were easily deflected. To the east, the Croatians launched sporadic raids into Orthodox countries, namely Bulgaria and what is now Serbia, but they did little. Naval fighting in the Adriatic and Eastern Mediterranean, albeit not as large as the battles to the west, was still critical to the fate of the war. The proud Venetian navy came up fighting against the Sicilians, with large battles but indecisive results. With the Catholic navies occupied elsewhere, the Romans were able to seize Crete and the Ionian Islands with little fighting.

Europe

The Maghreb Caliphate, power of the west, suddenly entered the war with an invasion of Christian Carthage, just months after conducting a purchase of the Venetian holdings in the Balearic Islands. The shock of war after having been at a pleasant peace for so long was detrimental to some nobles, who were less than pleased about it. Other concerns regard the Maghreb holdings in Provence – while the Catholics have not attacked yet, Maghreb naval defeats and the failed invasion of Rome have caused growing security concerns.
Maghrebs: -Stability

At the same time, the Maghrebs began to charge a toll on ships passing through what they call the Bab el-Zakat, or the Straits of Gibraltar to a Christian. While this was projected to bring in some extra revenue, it did extremely little, as the Mediterranean was little more than a war zone that traders were wise to avoid if they wished not to get sunk.

After its troops had died, trapped in Carthage during the fighting, Badajoz elected to stay completely out of the war, instead opting to focus on its own defenses, notably a line of coastal forts. The forts were impressive and gave many of the country’s nobles a greater feeling of security.

Badajoz: +Stability

Despite years of peace, Barcelona was growing weary fast from the fighting all around it. With this, Barcelona began a major military buildup. Some of the more influential traders worry that this might spell an end to the long peace and the fruits it has given it, although most simply respect the additional security.

Even though it had support from the greater Catholic world, Scotland was isolated – and the Catholic regime was doomed. A three-pronged attack involving Brythonia, Jorvik, and Jutland was more than enough to smash what little defense Scotland put up. Jorvik and Dublin both made progress against the Catholic missionaries, aided by the fact that the Pope’s head was turned south, not north. Even as Dominion control was restored, all illusions of its invincibility in matters of faith were shattered.

The Poles marched on Kyiv, and destroyed it in one fell swoop, burning the city down to the ground as they had done when it was first captured. But the tribal country’s troubles were far from over. In the name of converting the locals to the faith of the Pope and in retaliation for Poland’s attempted invasion, both Bohemia and Brandenburg attacked. Only local tribes stood in their way. Eventually, the Polish armies showed up, and held them back, but many local tribes now swear allegiance to the more powerful – and Catholic – rulers of the German states to the west.

What was once the Avar Khaganate, having been under Roman influence for decades, finally submitted and converted to Orthodoxy, being renamed the Kingdom of Bulgaria in the process. Any traitorous notions that the old pagans might have had were soon forgotten as a great celebration was thrown nationwide in honor of the khagan’s conversion.

The Suomi of Finland, isolated from the warfare and blood plaguing the shores of the Mediterranean, quietly finished their capital city, Keskitähti, the shimmering city of the far north. The Suomi continued expanding to the west and east, bringing more and more tribes under their helm. Many of these tribes, impressed at what the united federation could accomplish at Keskitähti, quietly realized that joining the Suomi’s grand federation would be the quickest path to power.

The East

Who can say no to the Emperor? How can you say no to the Emperor?

General George Basil bowed as the Emperor gave his commands. No matter how he personally felt about things, Who can say no to The Emperor? How can you say no to the Emperor?

Everyone remembered the Mad Emperor of 750, when the entire Roman Empire returned to Paganism through the will of one man.

Everyone remembered the Holy Roman Emperor, when the absolution of a single man united Catholic Europe.

Bloodshed, those are his orders. He knows that if he follows them, many Christians, Orthodox and Catholic, will both die. Sure, the others may be heretics as decreed by the Bull of 735, when the Franks declared themselves Emperors, but they are God Loving heretics-much more than what the Heathens or the Infidels can offer.

Who can say no to the Emperor? How can you say no to the Emperor? Basil walked to the Barracks and begun calling up the troops. They will be marching to Southern Italy soon.

Clearing his office, he found something he didn't remember putting there. Something which made him think again about his choices thus far.

A cross, carefully carved with a the figure of the suffering Christ, while on the back, in the language of the enemy, it spoke.

"There is one way you can say no to the Emperor."

Looking over the cross, he pulled it open to reveal something he didn't notice the first time.

Who can say no to the Emperor? How can you say no to the Emperor?

In his hands he held the answer, something which speaks quietly, but heard by all.

Not long after he oversaw the departure of troops to Sicily, the Roman Emperor suddenly began choking on his food. He doubled over to vomit. It was a lucky break – at that very moment, a crossbow bolt flew past his head. The Emperor thought he had survived – until the next day, he was found, in bed, with a knife in his back.

The succession collapsed, and two clear factions emerged. When it was clear that neither would concede, one claimant to the throne fled to Angora, and the Empire collapsed into civil war. It was almost an afterthought when under torture, one of the perpetrators confessed that he had met with a man from Aquitaine days before the assassination. While it took too long for news of the event to reach Italy and affect the defending forces, at home the Roman Empire was collapsing.

Three other provinces seceded in the mess – a Hellenic-majority Greek state with its capital in the ruins of Sparta; the Pontus, a fledgling state in northeast Anatolia; and a Serb state in the northwest. The Empire’s other subordinates have yet to take sides, but there is one thing for sure – the golden age of Rome is at an end.

The completion of Taman’s Heavenly Cathedral brought the flame of Orthodoxy even farther to the northeast. Pilgrims began flooding in. Amazed at the sight, many returned to their homes and began converting others into Orthodoxy. Travelers returned to Samarkand, founding an Orthodox community there. Even the King of Transoxiana, much to everyone’s surprise, showed up to view the cathedral.
Taman: +Economy

But Taman’s grip over the eastern trade routes into Transoxiana was dealt a harsh blow when the Ghaznavid Sultan of the Persians himself funded an expedition to establish a Persian presence in Samarkand. One thing led to another, and now roads and other routes between Hormuz and Samarkand are being built and refurbished to enable quick and easy trade.
Ghaznavids: +Economy

The collapse of the Gupta Empire, foreseen for so long, finally played out. The death of the last Gupta emperor without an heir brought civil war. In the west, the majority Islamic province of Baluchistan seceded, and the Indians were in no position to attempt to bring it back under their control. Much of the west coast was brought under the control of another breakaway province, Gujarat. The Tamil Chola Empire is now the strongest power in India, capitalizing on the Gupta collapse to seize many of the former empire’s southern provinces.

From far to the east, even beyond India, in a strange land that the Romans once brought back silkworms from hidden in a cane, came tales of a new dynasty rising from the ashes of some civil war or another, involving five dynasties and ten kindgoms. The terms ‘Cathay’ and ‘Song’ could be heard in Taman – whatever that actually meant. Supposedly Taman and parts of Islam know, but the secret of what actually lies to the east remains unknown to the great majority of Europe.

Novgorod is NPC again as I have not heard from Popcornlord.

Just about everyone had their literacy automatically boosted 1-2 points due to general improvements in that field and the fact that despite all the warfare, there are more people bringing back and exchanging ideas.
I know literacy did less than I would have hoped in this NES. At least I know one stat that’s not making a comeback in part 2.

Nice seeing some real bloodshed, although that update took longer than I would have liked, Any clerical erros let me known.
