Small Observations General Thread (things not worth separate threads)

Units' variation and details are on another level (as are the graphics). Even inside the same unit!

Resting units setting up their own little camps just might be the most exciting and adorable detail I could have hoped for, the charm and detail in some areas of this game is astounding

Yeah what's with all these general small observations in the small observations general thread?? :mischief:
Not all of small observations, I'm talking about the paranoid posts like "The outfit of this unit is wrong, the selection of unique is wrong, this is wrong, that is wrong..."

I agree with GDR, tbh. Being a bit nitpicky is fine, but the straight-up pedantry I've seen on this forum the past few weeks has been exhausting, and I'm a huge know-it-all myself.

An on-topic comment for this thread as well, as it's definitely a small observation not deserving its own thread. :hammer:

It looks like the localisations were done by AI right? This may just be a placeholder for the press version while proper translations are done. Otherwise this would absolutely not be acceptable to sell for the price they are asking (especially the price in Brazil!)

Combat preview shows about 95 damage will be dealt to the archers, but in reality they took 66 damage.
Huge RNG in combat damage? UI bug? Or unknown mechanics?

Edit: Their strength difference is 29, if the damage calculation is same with civ 6 the expected damage is 95.7 to archers and 9.4 to legions. There's ±20% RNG to this number, so the minimum damage to archers should be 76.6.

So much for combat prognosis accuracy :P

Each of us has his/her own expectations from the game. Some want accurate bonuses for civilizations, leaders, buildings and units, or they care more about gameplay mechanics, some are bothered about the look of leaders (I didn't like the old look of Pericles in Civilization VI, and I disliked even more the design of his Corinthian helmet), and others want accurate looking buildings and units for civilizations. This is fine. Personally, I have to say that I want them all. :yumyum:

Simple machine translation would have also done this trick even before the advance of AI. For instance, back in Civ 6, the official Chinese localization of "civic" is "municipal management" 市政, since machine translation at the time understood "civic" as in "civic center." Either way, it is a translation done in a hurry.

AI and machine translations always remind me of Sam Clemens' comment:

"The difference between the right word and the almost-right word is like the difference between lightning and a lightning bug."

And the difference between "Sam Clemens" and "Mark Twain" is the difference between a man who was a writer and a writer.

raptor playing as Napoleon rn on youtube. Think it’s an advanced start. I think units that are fortified or sleeping get a tent graphic? This was likely known already but still.

Edit: okay yeah I scrubbed through back to the start and looks like it’s an advanced start and he hovers over a bunch of mementos. Watching on console so I can’t snag screenshots, but there you go.

Edit: and looks like the wooden palisades we’ve seen aren’t actually walls, but Exploration age fortification graphics

In Russian translation of Civ5, Shoshone ability was translated as if it's "Great Expenses" instead of "Great Expanse" and it always was really painful to see. Unfortunately, translation quality is not always great...

So this feels like a fever dream a little, but someone on Reddit found remnants of a different (old?) UI, with all the elements being drastically different. For some reason the devs may have abandoned a n arguably prettier design? I have no clue what is happening. One of the screenshots is from the first gameplay showcase! Why would the devs, instead of tweaking this version, throw it out of the window entirely?????????

Spoiler :

We could have had PRETTY CITY BANNERS? I'm going crazy.

This may explain why the UI looks unfinished, that's because someone made a (stupid, in my humble opinion) call to abandon the former project half a year ago, which is not a lot of time to procure something new? I don't understand.

I saw that, and I have to believe that that version of the UI is still available somewhere because it is so much better imo

I don't recognize that UI; I don't think it's from the currently available trailers.
These are the sources:

A preview in Singapore with different UI sounds like something out of a YT video of an ICEBERG EXPLAINED trying to be mysterious.
