Good points. I'll admit I'm just thinking of what would make for a cool UU and I'm a bit of a sucker for cool and unique armor so knights/soldiers wearing black armor would be pretty high up on a list of cool UU. The Black Army could very well be the LUA and the UU could be something else or a specific unit from the Black Army like the above mentioned Black Army Hussar.

I'd be shocked if Hnugary didn't get Hussars as a unique unit. Whether they're stand alone or a replacement for a new Light Cavalry unit that falls between Horsemen and Cavalry is the bigger question to me.

Lancers new light cavalry unit with Hussars as Hungarys UU?

Edit: And Sipahi for Ottomans.

If this is Corvin Castle I wonder if they will go with Hungry or Magyar

I might be wrong, but don't those mean the same thing, with the first being the exonym and the latter the endonym?

Hungary is the best unseen-before European civ they could add (apart from Italy maybe).

Now Italy made similarly to "Greek civ model" (one major city state and its ruler as capital and leader) is my next European dream. Especially Florence + Lorenzo di Medici. Italy is probably the most important civ to the world's history never-seen-before.

YES! And Milan with Matilda and Venice again!

Next in a line are: Bohemia, Romania, Bulgaria, Lithuania, Switzerland, Ireland, Kievan Rus...

Now this I disagree, I'd much rather see like at least a dozen different civs from Africa and the Americas, not to mention older European civs like the Gauls, instead of any of those. Also "Kievan Rus" is Russia, just like Germany goes all the way back to Freddie Barbarossa.

Isn't Hungary on a plain ie. the Great Hungarian Plain? So why all the hills?
If modern Hungary is concerned, yes, it does not have much of Hills or Mountains. If you look at the kingdom of that time - perhaps the plains are in minority. I am glad FXS is not making them based on the old Hungarians, who were roving barbarians, but took rather a renaissance approach.
Someone mentioned that the Mongolian invasion stopped in Hungary ... but not because they were defeated. Temujin died and the leaders rushed to confirm their own power. Building of stone castles (or rebuilding the wooden ones) followed across the country.
Also a Matthias Corvinus leader is politically acceptable for surrounding folks (and me). We also have stories about the good king Matthias. Citing the wikipedia entry:
"...stories about "Matthias the Just", who wandered in disguise throughout his realm to deliver justice to his subjects, seem to have spread during Matthias's reign. The saying "Dead is Matthias, lost is justice" became popular soon after his death, reflecting that commoners were more likely to have received a fair trial in Matthias's reign than under his successors. Matthias is also the subject of popular folk tales in Croatia, Hungary, Serbia, and Slovenia."
I also read he was positive to a european alliance... a diplomacy hint?
Looking forward to the reveal!

Anyway, I am very happy because of Hungarian presence. Next in a line are: Bohemia, Romania, Bulgaria, Lithuania, Switzerland, Ireland, Kievan Rus...
As much as I'd love to see Kingdom of Bohemia as a Czech, I'd rather have it appear in Civ VII. Now, we have Germany, Poland and possibly Hungary occupying places near Bohemia, it would make the area very overpopulated. Though... I'd like to see some Balkan nation other than Greeks. Serbian Empire or something like that.

The 4 people who voted for Hungary can step up and claim their prize.

Hooray, I win!

I thought Hungary would be first because:

  • They seemed like one of the less likely civs to lean heavily on new mechanics; Rise and Fall's First Looks started with civs that lightly touched on new mechanics (Korea with governors, Netherlands with loyalty) and announced civs with a bigger emphasis on them (Georgia, Mapuche) later on once the systems had been explained.
  • They've been relatively highly-requested among the never-before-seen civs, which helps grab attention - much like Poland did in Civ 5 Brave New World.

Some kind of horseman replacement would make sense for Hungary, especially since there's no replacement for the horseman currently.

However, if some central/western Asian civ is added, they oughta get the UU horseman instead. Tartar light cavalry was in super high demand back in the days. Hell, European kings actually paid tartars to immigrate to their lands so that they could immediately conscript them if needed. That is, when they weren't away doing mercenary work.

If they do go with Hussars, then they'd be later than a horseman. The big Q is if Hungary gets Hussars, how do they differentiate them than the Winged Hussars that are already in the game?

Austria had Hussars with double flanking bonus in Civ V, while Poland's Winged Hussars were pretty much the same as they are now.

I'm excited for Hungary, which is a civ I've wanted in game, but I was really hoping for a civ that would disprove the leak. :p

The Black Army included Knights, armored infantry, and artillery (the one illustration I've seen was of a Bombard). The infantry were noted at the time for having about 1/4 their number armed with arquebus, so IF it were to be a UU, a Pike and Shot replacement would be a good candidate. However, since the defining characteristic was that it was a full-time, professional army, some overall characteristic would seem to be a better choice: perhaps, reflecting the professionalism, either faster Promotions or an automatic Promotion on formation like Poundmaker's scouts get, or the ability to Buy units cheaper with Gold.

The armor would be black and there would be no wings. :p
Side note: What if they gave all Hungarian units black clothes/armor?

I think that even the content that we are more skeptical of/dislike will be pleasantly outweighed by how much they're doing here. Can't all have it our way perfectly. I, too, am very excited for Hungary! I've always wanted to see them represented. So much potential, used to be one of the largest states in Europe and an influential regional player. It should've been in a couple games ago over some evil blob civs like the unmentionable Civ IV BTS monstrosity (and I'm not talking about the HRE :p)

After the early time /1430-1711/ the hungarian hussars served in regular army /regiment?/ and weared a very colorful clothes, the colors depended from the founder noble family's coat of arms. The typical colors were red for pants and green for jacket with hard cord ornament as armor against sword cut. There was one strict rule: no green for pants due to it was the saint color for Mohamed prophet and it provoked their turkish /Ottoman/ enemies: green on your ass... :).

If Hungary's achievement isn't called "But You're Still Hungary..." then screw this entire expansion

What the reference for that one?

Hungary produces a new great person type. "Great Pornstars" double Culture but halve Production.

I am suddenly reminded of how Hungary was depicted in The Onion's parody atlas "Our Dumb World", subtitled as "Must Be 18 Years or Older to Enter".

Wait... isn't that St. Wenceslas... of Bohemia as well? Haha

... or the Bulgarian Empire. I remember reading someone's (no, I am NOT trying to start a meme here) post on a thread about new civs they wish to add to the roster, and saying that the Bulgarian Empire is vastly underrated.
