So I guess I don't understand something about trade routes

I rarely play water maps so I'm playing arch to learn them. Anyway I have 3 cities, they are on the same landmass but not connected by culture or roads. I have GLH. 2 of my cities have no trade routes. One does but it is connected to another civ and has routes only with that civ. So I thought since I have sailing and all of my cities are coastal they would be able to trade with one another. Why am I wrong.

You need to explore all the coast tiles between the cities.

And make sure there are no barbarian galleys.

This is actually one of those tiny things that experienced players have learned to do, but take for granted and never mention them.

When exploring, its important to expose ALL of the coast. This isnt just to see about possible food tiles, its also to ensure a trade connection if you do drop a city in the area.

Or the ai must have explored all of that coast. In this case you'll get the routes too with that ai.
