So...is it worth trying to watch the Game of Thrones series?

I haven't watched a full episode of that series, ever. I don't intend to read the books either. I did see a number of videos from it, and some were brutal enough to make an impression (juxtaposed to the somewhat anodyne LOTR film-making, anyway).

So i felt like asking if those who have seen the game of thrones (4rth season now running) deem it as interesting, or just as a gore-fest.

Got to say that the one scene which made me consider watching the series was the one where poor Jaime loses half of his touch :jesus:

It is most certainly a disturbing, misogynistic gore-fest populated by unlikeable sadists.

It is also interesting and pretty.

Whether or not its virtues are sufficient to redeem it from its hateful aspects is really an individual determination. However, if your stomach turns at casual brutality then you may wish to avoid it.

The books are worth reading. Though they have some weaknesses that stand out. Haven't seen the show.

When I discovered it I think I watched most of the first season in one day
The story is just so deep and interesting, it's hard to explain in words, I'd just go ahead and watch.

I haven't read the books but I have friends who have. They have me watching the TV show.

Spoiler :
It's not bad, and I'd recommend the first season because it's basically Mr. Smith goes to Washington and gets beheaded. After the active war dies down a bit, parts of it seem to drag on, but the fourth season hasn't disappointed so far. There's also a lot of unnecessary-for-storytelling nudity.

I am watching and like it. I wait for it to come out on Netflix then watch an entire season in a few days.

It's ok, I don't like show Stannis though, book Stannis had my support.

It's very good, both the books and the show, so I'd recommend either.

I don't like it. Rather silly show. Wouldn't waste my time on it.

Hm, interesting opinion. I thought that behind the façade of sadism and brutality it is actually a very PC show destined for modern and young audience (not sure if the books are like that). It's full of extremely powerful women, including great female warriors. Several of the best fighters are gay or bisexual. The most likable of the throne contenders is engaged in a pretty silly and dislocated slave-liberating crusade. So there are a lot of messages behind this mask of violence and amorality, and they're all PC.

They are just buttering up the Aryan eff-puppet before she gets slaughtered. Makes it more impactful that way.

I'm hoping she's the mad one and visersy was just trying to warn us.

The show has more empowered female characters than almost any other show I can think of. Lady Stark, Arya, Sansa, Brienne, Cersei, Daenerys, Margaery Tyrell, Ygritte, Melisandre, that old Tyrell woman whose name I forget, and I'm sure there are more I'm missing. Yes, there are some titillating female nudity scenes and scenes of violence against women, but often these are just depictions of misogyny.

That's a curious interpretation, to me it was just a universe populated by random people, some of whom happened to be gay. The things you point to as PC-ness to me are just regular conflict devices. But then again that's just my take on it.

If you compare it to more classical works of fiction, specially of the "fantasy" genre, it has far more empowered female characters, as well as non-stereotypical gay characters.

Two of the most popular shows, game of thrones and walking dead are about really bleak worlds full of relentless brutality. I like and follow both shows but I do wonder what it says about our times that they are what people are watching now.
