As promised a while ago, I've now finished the creation of my soundtrack expansion module. It does mainly two things:

- split the previous shared soundtracks for Buddhism, Hinduism, Confucianism and Taoism into a Far East (Taoism, Confucianism, Buddhism if China, Japan, Korea or Mongolia) and a South Asia (Buddhism and Hinduism) soundtrack. The Far East soundtrack remained the same, and I added a number of subdued/meditative tunes for the South Asia soundtrack (mainly Sitar).

- replaced the old Middle East (Islam and Zoroastrianism) soundtrack with Islamic music from the Sword of Islam.

I also added two Christian songs from SoI to the (Christian) medieval soundtrack.

This addition is completely modular and should work without problems with the SVN. It won't work properly if you are not on the latest SVN revision however, since the necessary SDK adjustments are only available through SVN.

Simply download the package and unpack it into your "RFC Dawn of Civilization" folder. It contains an Assets folder which has to be integrated into the one that's already there.

Thanks! For me this is more important than elaborate city/unit/terrain styles. It will make Islamic/South Asian civs much more fun.

Still, the module is quite large. If I delete some of the music files, it will still work, right?

Yes, but you might get some "file not found" errors during the game. Better delete the corresponding tracks from Modules\DoC Soundtrack\CIV4EraInfos.xml as well.

I see. Thanks!

Is anyone familiar with how to find public domain (classical) music? This module could be expanded in several directions: Russian/Slavic; Christian/Medieval European; Industrial/Modern.

Edit: So far what I found is this:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Sound/list

The quality of the music here is uneven. So it helps for you to sort by performer. IMO the better performers on this list include:

- U.S. Air Force Band
Horst (Modern Era)

- Roxana Pavel Goldstein & Elias Goldstein
Telemann (Medieval Europe)

- Randolph Hokanson (Highly recommended! This guy is sublime)
Liszt
Schubert

- Neal O’Doan
Grieg
Liszt

- MIT Concert Choir
Handel (Medieval Europe)
Schubert

- Fulda Symphonic Orchestra (these guys are in Germany)
Beethoven

There is a sore lack of Russian music. Not surprising though.

i DL'ed VD and this soundtrack thing just now along with the most recent SVN patch. however, my dawn of civilization folder has a blue exclamation mark and many folders inside now have either a exclamation mark or a qustion mark.

the mod plays fine though, but I dont hear any new music. VD seems to be working although a few units seem to have their skins messed up (such as russian musketman appearing like a asian musketman variation)
so, what could I have done wrong in setting up these soundtracks? I just unpacked them into the main folder

In which order did you install them?

Blue question marks mean the folder/file isn't part of the SVN repository (to be expected for everything that comes with the music module), red exclamation marks indicate that the file is different than its equivalent in the repository. This usually happens when something is overwritten. The VD package does that for a couple of files. In general, that's nothing to worry about, because I designed it to work regardless. It could lead to conflicts if you want to update your SVN after that.

I think VD has its own sound defines which are overwritten by the new sound defines by both SVN changes and this module. If you want to hear the extra music, I guess you'll have to make do without the extra VD sounds, i.e. install VD first, then the music module and overwrite.

That the soundtracks for menu, victory, & defeat haven't been touched yet, i.e. the four music files in the
\Beyond the Sword\Mods\RFC Dawn of Civilization\Assets\Sounds\Soundtrack folder.

I think polishing up the music for the modmod would really make the game more unique and less... vanilla. For instance, I recently changed the main screen music from that really old psuedo-African chant music to an instrumental version of the Beatles' Within You Without You; the effect is a less repetitive and attention-grabbing screen for us niche users that know what map and civilization we're going to play before we even pick.
What do you think about completely changing the soundtrack? Maybe adding some of my favorite songs to the modern era that isn't cold and bloodless like the current soundtrack, like some good old gospel music from the 50's :)

Link to video.

If you want I can maybe work on a modmodmod that replaces the music, but I'd like a soundtrack that specializes beyond my coding knowledge.

Speaking of gospel music, the version of Baba Yetu on iTunes (Sowetu Gospel Choir) has a much more raw, gospelly tone, as well as a better arrangement of the piece. Considering the context of the previous post, I think the iTunes version would be,just as good or possibly better for the opening soundtrack than the Civ4 arrangement of Baba Yetu.

I just find Baba Yetu overplayed. At least by people who overplay Civilization :D

NEVER!!!!!!!!!!?!!!!!!?!!!!!!!!!?!

But seriously, the arrangement on iTunes is leagues better than the Civ4 version.

The link was outdated, it should now work again.

Please add in pop/rock/jazz stuff in the modern era. That is the most popular music these days, and will be better for ambience than the contemporary classical stuff. Renaissance and Industrial already has classical. Can you please add some to the modern soundtrack?

Civ 3 had Smash (Rock) Stars (Jazz) TechnoMix (Techno) and ModernFull (Pop/Easy Listening). Those songs really added to the feeling of the modern era. I have a copy of civ 3 and I could send them to you for use in the soundtrack.

I would really appreciate if you do this.

Thank you,

Bobby Martnen

I think the minimalist music is fine. MAYBE in the future era there should be more techy music, but I think that's it. Then again, this is coming from the perspective of a classical music geek who hates most non-classical music from the 50's onwards.

The music they play in the modern age is terribly dull and cold though. Not even Wagner.
