Also, how'd the Romans kill all our units we had over there? With archers? By us attacking and losing?

I will play in about 9 hours, as I have to go to work now :-/

And yes they did have archers, but the unit that destroyed about 7 or 8 of our units was the spearman-one of them. And yes by attacking and losing.:confused: :(

Please try again gunning, and remember that it's probably case-sensitive.

btw, out of curiosity, why does everyone put .sav files in zip files, when you can just so much more easily get the game to compress them??
 
Saves in zip files, for security reasons. This forum tends to corrupt some .sav files. The hassle of having to go back and get a new file even ONCE is major compared to the moments spent zipping and unzipping. Plus the zip still does compress the files a little more.

Anybody NOT zipping files in one of my SG's :eek: would be sure to hear about it. :nono:

Sometimes there are reasons for things being done a certain way that, although they don't appear to make sense, do after all have purpose.

Sirian, are you sure that the forum corupts .sav files? I find that fairly difficult to believe to be honest, since there is no good reason whatsoever why it would. Both zip files, and Civilization III files are just raw binary data. Zip files don't provide any error correction (they do provide error detection, but then, so do .sav files) either.

Can you provide an explanation as to why zip files wouldn't get corrupted and sav files would?
 
An explanation, no. But the facts are the facts, whether or not I can explain them. There have been instances of .sav files that do not function after passing through uncompressed. There was an outbreak of problems after Firaxis added compression to the sav files themselves and people stopped using zip files, around about the same time CF had file troubles and brought the new file server online and begged us all to stop using the forum attach feature. These same save files proved uncorrupted in their own right, and worked fine after being compressed and resent. No such problems arose with zip files. As you have no doubt already learned, this file server has its share of peculiarities.

I'm not interested in figuring out why or fixing it. I'm only interested in not having the issue take up any more of my time than it already has, including time spent debating the matter or reading about it. I regret saying anything. Forget about it. Your SG thread, do things however you please, and it will sort itself out one way or the other.

Sirian: well, I am relatively new to succession games on this forum so I'm afraid I was unaware of the history you mentioned. Liking to discover things myself, I'll probably keep posting sav files in this thread, but I agree it's not worth time debating over, and I'll be sure to use .zip files if/when I'm involved in any succession games that you're in (and I am very interested in those Deity SGs!)

I am not going to get into a long talk on .zip either.
However, I insist on only using the .zip format in my games.

Key difference - .zip will detect a download error, .sav won't.
I had *TWO* games die due to corrupted games. Both were with players using .sav formats.
 
One other problem worth mentioning......

The amount of space available for posted files is limited. Too many files posted has caused this forum to crash on a number of occasions. If you check the "Delete old posts" thread there will be more explaination.
 
Lee: so ok, .zip files have better error detection; that's the best reason I've heard so far. Thanks for the explanation. meldor: .sav files support compression too so the space difference is insubstantial.

Anyhow, sorry, this thread is getting a little off-topic. I'm sorry for bringing up the issue and I really didn't want to get into a debate over it.

back to the issue at hand: gunning, the file isn't at the url you posted, could you please reupload it?

I now see what was wrong. I wasn't uploading them first. It now should work.
 
ok, well I'm at work at the moment, but I'll be able to play in around 6 hours.

It would be nice by the way, if everyone could verify that a saved game is downloadable and works after posting it. I always do this as a matter of course when uploading anything to the web.
