Spaces in player names causes gmail to truncate Civ4 PBEM saves, thereby making them unreconizable to the game. This most definatly happens with gmail and may perhaps happen with other email clients.

The fix for this situation is to simply remove spaces from players names. For example.. change "Civ Gamer" to "CivGamer". Other charectors might also prevent the sending of in-game saves.. such as Civ_Gamer, Civ~Gamer, Civ-Gamer etc.

Also.. You can still play a saved file that has been truncated by renaming the file with the following extension... ".Civ4SavedGame"

The file "Player One AD-2020.Civ4SavedGame is truncated to "Player.file" and so the extension must be replaced.

Thanks to FortyJ at Evolution Games for discovering this.

how do you get gmail to send it? i filled out the alt+d box correctly. is there a gmail setting?

Actually.. I was mistaken to think that removing the spaces would allow gmail users to send in-game saves. All it does is allow us to correctly receive the in-game saves sent from other players.

I've since been told that it's most likely gmails security measures that prevents us from sending our own saves from within the game.

I'll edit my OP to reflect the correction...
