Speculating on (Historical) Civ Progression

Scythia seems like a popular inclusion in Civ6 and could return again. Or they could bring the Huns back--they might fit better in Civ7 than Civ5. Or they could really surprise us with the Rouran or Yuezhi or Xianbei or Xiongnu since they don't necessarily need a leader.
The Horse-head Civ is most likely one of those yeah. I thought about Xiongu because they were led by a Confucius AI.

Otherwise, would a horse's head be a viable icon for potential Sogdian Civ?

Probably - but everything is so messy, so who knows? :crazyeye:
I mean, the Ottomans existed in the Modern Age, but "the Sick Man of Europe" is probably not the best look for them. :crazyeye:

Celtic Tribes ==> Roman ==> Anglo-Saxon ==> Viking ==> Norman ==> English ==> GB
Given the age system it would be Britons/Romans/Anglo-Saxons > Anglo-Saxons/Danes/Normans/English > Great Britain... (Anglo-Saxons listed twice because they could be fit into either era.)

Otherwise, would a horse's head be a viable icon for potential Sogdian Civ?
That would make my year.

I cannot imagine them opting for the Islamic Republic of Iran.

I was taking advantage of the blurry lines, but I definitely acknowledge the Sassanids fit better in Antiquity and the Safavids in Exploration.

Mongolia and Ottomans should both be Exploration.
I think it is very likely that there will be Turkish representation in the age 3, and I bet on the Ottomans. If not that, they will went to Republic of Turkey.

I'm betting on Turkey and Ataturk for Age 3, personally.

Wouldn't Abyssinia and Ethiopia be the same thing? And actually, I think it would be nice to have other horn civs for once, now that we don't need leaders.
Yes, but I guess I was thinking about using that term for the Medieval history, as opposed to having the more modern country of Ethiopia. Though in all likely you might have a point that they might go for another civ like Somali for Exploration Age, considering Aksum uniques also revolved around ocean trading.

But then again, imagine how good Rock-Hewn Churches would look in this game?

Aksum > Somali > Ethiopia would be a cool path to take, much better than Ethiopia > Buganda, which I really hope doesn't happen. Nubia could appear in Age 1 and also be part of this path.

Almost all paths are going to be absurd, and basically tangentially related via geography at best.

There’s literally no way to satisfy historical purists with this system—and I dare say it’s 100% impossible in a videogame spanning all of human history in general. It’s just not meant to do that.
Not mention the challenge of fitting it into the narrow confines of a 3-age system. The concept that nations become something else over time is sound, but the real killer for realism and/or historical purity is having only 2 steps from antiquity to modern.

I think the game needed a Medieval Age before the Exploration Age. Four Ages total would feel better.

I think we will get some really odd things on release. Like, I doubt we will get both Portugal and Peru in the base game. So we could get Nazca -> Inca -> Brasil, or Spain -> Brasil or maybe Maya -> Inca -> Brasil. Which sounds absurd but follows the leaps of Egypt -> Songhai -> Buganda

I don't think we will get three Japans and three Koreas on release, so I am expecting at least one line like China -> Mongolia/Korea/Japan -> Japan/China.

soft confirmation of normans is apparently based on speculation from ign because ed beach gave the example of london as inspiration. there’s nothing saying normans are actually in if IGN just speculated because they misunderstood ed beach.

also hoping buganda have more natural predecessors. i don’t know too much about the history of the great lakes region though

I wouldn't be shocked. Both are huge markets for Civ.
