This thread is for discussing whether any African civs will make it in Civ6 vanilla, except for Egypt, of course.

Since Civ1, the Zulus have been in every iteration of Civilization (even CivRev)

In Civ4, a Saharan empire was represented for the first time with Mali, Ethiopia was also added for the first time

In Civ5, Mali was replaced by Songhai, and Ethiopia came in the Gods and Kings expansion. Zulus were in the Brave New World expansion

Which African civ will make it in the Civ6 vanilla this time? (other than Egypt :p)

Why just one choice?

I think the Zulus are in due to popularity. Maybe not in vanilla, but at some point.

I would like to see the Ashanti and/or the Kongo as new African civs.

I thought they wouldn't put more than one African civ (excluding Egypt) in the vanilla game, Perhaps a moderator can change it to multiple choice?

I'm not sure I'd call the Carthaginians an "African" civilization. Yes, they were located in Africa, but the Carthaginians themselves were culturally Phoenician and still referred to themselves as "Chanani" as late as the sixth century according to St. Augustine of Hippo.

Just included them because their base was in modern-day Tunisia, an African country. I agree with what you said though.

If they are looking for big personalities for leaders, few are bigger than Paul Kruger. Imagine a bible-thumping Roosevelt with a chin curtain. I would love to see the Boers but it's probably not a good idea to represent sub-saharan Africa with a white "colonial" civ of all. They also appear to have somewhat of a bad name in history, but Kruger wasn't nearly as bloodthirsty as Shaka and didn't own slaves, unlike Washington. Still a very interesting civ which could focus on expansion, religion and a strong cavalry. Probably best left to the modding community, or in the best case scenario a DLC.

A very underappreciated civ are the Matabele with Mzilikazi - Shaka's arch rival - as their leader. He deserted Shaka and founded a couple of kingdoms in South Africa and Zimbabwe, killing everybody who stood in his way. Moshoeshoe I of the Sotho would be a less bloodthirsty choice - a very noble ruler who secured the independence of Lesotho.

Given the emphasis on TSL in promises, I don't expect fewer African civs than Civ5. Given that, a Sahel/Saharan Civ is a no-brainer - whether it's Mali or Songhai, I don't know. I also would expect something towards the south of Africa over someone like Ethiopia (and certainly over Carthage or Morocco).

My preference is for Kongo (which would be closer to modern Angola than the DRC). I think they're an interesting Civ that had quite an impressive empire. They did use European Imperialism to help fuel their success in some ways, but that still puts them above the Zulu, who are basically just famous because of resistance (to use an analogy, Kongo is closer to the Iroquois while the Zulu are closer to the Souix).

While I doubt we will see them in vanilla, the new district mechanic works well for the Zulu: the Ikhanda can be what it was always meant to be - a proper military encampment! Add that to the obligatory Impi Spearman replacement, and Kraals as defensive pastures and there's a solid concept to build a civ around there :).

Given that TSL is a pipe-dream for future development of the game, not a reality on release, i can see them adding one more African civ at most.

West Africa has featured in the last two games, and Zulu and Ethiopia are basically staples now. However, i have heard rumours that Kongo were one of two civs that just missed the cut for BNW, so there's already been development into making, or at least considering them as, them a civ. What's more, we have been told for certain there are never before featured civs in this game, and with so many predictable vanilla staples, there are few more fruitful areas there could genuinely be new candidates beyond Africa. Also, Kongo has an iconic female ruler which is a rare and important trait they do look for these days.

Kongo has a very strong case this time around :goodjob:

Instead of the Boers, if they ever want to go that route, it makes more sense to have a united South Africa civ under Mandela. This should only happen after like at least ten proper sub Saharan civs have been added. The series has been so neglectful of pre-colonial Africa. With IV and V, however, it's been slowly getting better.

Why isn't Kush (or Nubia) one of the choices?

Voted for Carthage, because of rich history, arch enemy of Rome, so well known by most.
A very colonial merchant empire, excellent war and trade ships, with armies of mercenaries and war elephants, who can overlook Carthage?. Originally from middle east, but based in north Africa.

Mali should replace Songhai I think. Kongo is very likely to appear in one of the expansions and Abyssinia/Ethiopia played a crucial part in the continent's history too.

They finally gave up on making Zimbabwe the capital of the Zulu, lol, the capital should be Kwa-Bulawayo, I believe, Zimbabwe as Zulu capital is just as accurate as Shoshone building the Pueblo.

Boers would be cool!, but doubt it will ever happen, they could compete with Mandela led South Africa, Zulus and Congo (and perhaps modern Ghana based Ashanti) for the vast and rich south and central African lands on Earth Maps.

I'd love to see Nubia, but I doubt we ever will. Perhaps we could get Meroë as a city-state.

I think Kush/Nubia is a prime choice if they're looking for female leaders. There's a long list of Kandake to choose from. It was a little obvious they were stretching in V with Mad Maria and Dido.

In the absence of Kush, I voted Zulu. I know some people are tired of them but they've been one of my favorites in multiple Civ games. Can't help it.

BTW, I voted Kongo because I was somehow thinking Mali or Songhai were taken as a given (much like Egypt). If there's only one other Civ, it's likely one of those two.

I would love to have nubia/koush, carthage, berbers (numidia ?), egypt, ethiopia and songhai.

Songhai probably isn't returning to the base game two titles in a row the same way Mali didn't. Mali has a perfect leader for the new system in Mansa Musa but still missed the cut in CiV. Kongo has been a very popular choice among fans for a long while, is a new civ that has not yet appeared in the series (which we are confirmed to be getting at least a few of in the base game, as we did with Songhai/Siam over Mali/Khmer last time, and even to an certain extent Assyria over Sumer if you include the expansions), and has very good leader potential in Nzinga Mbande, who is probably the most popular leader pick anyways.

Hmm.. I keep thinking Kongo but what about Ghana? I think the new Civilizations could be Ghana/Burma to replace Songhai/Siam.

Well it seems that I am the only one who voted Benin...
I did so for several reasons :
- rather well-known history
- can have female rulers
- Yorubas are famous for their ruse, which is a rather rare attribute in Civilization (the word Yoruba means astute, smart, playful) - main reason for which I voted for them
- it's an area that has not been explored in Civ yet

If Kanem and Dahomey were better known, I would want one of them, if only for interesting gameplay mechanics that could be put into place, as well as the Dahomey Amazons.

As it stands, Kongo has my vote.

I expect to see Mali in the game (just for Mansa Musa alone), but wouldn't mind seeing Kongo, Ashanti, Benin or Zimbabwe instead
