spies, continued

Know how those go Mîtiu. I can pick it up and play after work today... would work out quite neatly for me as I'm thinking of catching bad films tomorrow night anyway.

That be OK with people?

I can only play tomorow the earliest, so swaping is ok with me.

If the consens is going after freddie I have no problem with that. My thoughts are mostly just, well, Idiot thoughts, spoken out loud anyway. By no means take them too serious, I´m only telling some of my brain slime. :crazyeye:
But sooner or later it would be great to tickle the AI with some silly spy actions, like blowing up their happyness, poison their water or revolt them to useless civics, just for kicks, to retaliate what they´ve done to me so much times.

Wenz - Doh - hadn't recalled the new roster and didn't realise I was in until after you. I seem to be getting slow in my old age. ;)

If I'm to play, what's the consensus on AK's questions?

steal cheap techs. expand up the west coast (but not too fast). set up to attack Freddie.

Mitiu Ioan, no worries. I think remember having a social life at one time.

sorry if this is :deadhorse:, but don't forget to weight the spy points.

Summary:
2 New cities (from dotmap)
Maths.
Our first great spy!
We can see Freddies research - he has just finished Calendar.
Ended up backsettling - seemed easy and sensible at the time - the army is on the way for west coast expansion.
Made an executive decision to research Alphabet - so we can go spying.

Hope these 2 things are OK - they seemed sensible at the time...

In a fit of stupidity, I realise I have 2 workers chopping out a calendar resource we can't use yet. Sorry!

The Full report:
Spoiler :

Flogging that horse is a good idea. IMO can never be reminded of things too many times.

I weight freddie up to 1 as told!

Dead_Horse.jpg

Look over the save for any signs of things to change. I'm disappointed in this quest - everything is in perfect order! And there's a lovely number of wokers.

Press Enter.

475BC (96/1)
Our Warrior beats a barb. In celebration I rename him:

Krusty.jpg

After the crown prince of fools! Or something. He gets a woodsman 2 promotion and runs away from the barb warrior. Amusingly, of course.

Idiot Accademy finishes ziggurat - starts a Vulture. Cretinberg whips the settler for 2 pop.

450BC (97/2)
Cretinberg - Settler > Ziggurat - MM for hammers. Idiot accademy looks developed enough for right now, so move one worker north - the other will road to our coastal cottage city. Lower Science to 80% to eke our cash out.

425BC (98/3)
Idiot Accademy - Vulture to Settler - I like the look of the river city site and it's a 5 turn investment.

400BC (99/4)
The settler moves closer to the Beachfront Property site.

375BC (100/5)
Maths is in. Start on Alphabet - we will need spies to spy on anyone! :)

Sea Views is founded:

Sea_Views.jpg

Tried to call it Beachfront Property, but it wouldn't fit in the little box... It starts a workboat.

Notice we don't have OB with Ghandi - so sign one.

350BC (101/6)
Happytowne finishes it's library, so gets a ziggurat queued.

325BC (102/7)
The vulture makes his first kill:

Vultures.jpg

300BC (103/8)
Idiot Accademy finishes the settler, starts a vulture. Cretinberg finishes the ziggurat and starts a vulture - work a spy specialist for now as it is close to the happy cap.

Could whip the ziggy in Happytowne, but it's able to work the gold and iron and food now - which seems a better use of the people IMO.

275BC (104/9)
Casanova - our first (of many) great spies is born. And a great lover to boot! Fantastic!

Casanova.jpg

He moves to the capital as discussed.

Scumhampton is founded to the east of our capital on the beachfront 2 site - starts a library:

Scumhampton.jpg

250BC (105/10)
Sea Views workboat is chopped out - activates clam power. Starts a Ziggurat.

We can see Freddies research now - making 12 EP per turn. Nice! Currently he's 1 turn from Calendar.

250BC (105/10)
Workers mill about. Nothing much else

Commentsfor next person:
The Great Spy is unmoved - it has not wasted any turns. Was 99% certain it is to be settled in Idiot Academy, but left it for discussion.

We are 7 turns from Alphabet at 60% running a profit.

Think we should hold off on taking the barb city till at least one more Ziggurat has finished.

Enjoy it!

General comment:
It's weird - the Ziggurats are more expensive than organised Courthouses, but they feel like a better deal to me. Perhaps I need more sleep or something? :)

Zigs are hybrid, halfway from normal CH's but they're more early-game-oracle-gambit-friendly.

Agree on Gspy in our big commerce city, the capital (bureaucracy anyone?)

He gets a woodsman 2 promotion and runs away from the barb warrior. Amusingly, of course.

Looks good. Agree with casanova going to the capital to woo the ladies. Need to start thinking about how we will be using the spies when alpha comes in.

Just checking, everyone, knows about WFYABTA and won't be trading alpha for archery, mono and something else?

Revised roster:
beorn - found 2 metal!
mitiu -up
wenz - on deck
trivial - Just played very well
ak - recovering from that triposomething chemical in turkey

O.k. - I played my turns ( 10 or 11 - not sure, because I feel that is necessary to disscus a little bit the next steps ).

Good news : We captured Scythian on NE of our empire without any loss. :) Didn't rename it - this is left for disscusion too ...
Bad news : Our north woodsman warrior was lost to a barbarian archer. In fact here was something strange. Freddy seems to be constantly harrashed by barbarians ( which pillaged his copper and so on ). I left the security of a forest in order to cross a plain and I choos to enter Freddy's land where I supposed I'll be safe. Wrong move - I entered exactely near a barb archer.

General situation : Researched Alphabet. Our first spy was trained in Cretinberg and wait there unmoved. Researched Sailing - we have a lot of costal city so this could really help ( anyway it was a cheap tech - 3 or 4 turns ). :) Because Freddy already research Monarchy - which I found due to incredible performance of Cassanova to German ambassador wife in capital ... ;) - I belive that we could aim for Civil Service now ... and after another hot night Cassanova will found out the secrets of hmmm ... something related with kings, queen and their crowns ... :mischief:
Finnishing one more Ziggurat - so the research rate is stable now at 70% ( even after adding Scythian to our empire we are exactely at the edge ). However maybe will be a good ideea to start accumulating some spy-points too. Finnished a temple in Idiot Academy - so happiness limit is at 8 now.

A stupid mistake - didn't try to do any tech-trade.

That's all for the moment ... I'll attach a save with our new city ... and the save.

Regards all and please feel free to criticise any of my decision.

Looking good :)

The warrior in german land was a good call, it just didn't work. Shi† happens.

Not trading wasn't bad; IIRC tech trading is off altogether.

Scythian was founded on rice, it's not the best location one could find ... we can't disband cities in civ4 now, can we? Or we could gift it to Freddy, start a war ... :borg:

As for spy points, we do need them but the slider is not the solution.

Good turns there! Nicely done adding a new city!

Hell, no probs with the scout - I'd have thought he was safe there too, but what can ya do! :)

Wonder if freddies barbarian issues are partly down to the great wall? That might be pushing them into his territory?

I think spy specialists offer much more bang for the buck right now than the slider does?

In fact here was something strange. Freddy seems to be constantly harrashed by barbarians ( which pillaged his copper and so on ).
all those barbs that can't enter our borders are visiting Freddy.

Tech trading is turned on. Bede had it set for no tech brokering in WH-02. I took that restriction away.

We'll just have to live with it.

Haven't opened the save yet. what's the state of our military?

Had a brief look at the save, will play tomorrow.

Heres our military:

milmt2.jpg

some random thoughts:
- dont like warriors in our cities as its now christs birthday, even with great wall better units are preferred
- what was our statement on the pyramids? would take ~20 turns in the cap, I´m not sure it would give us much
- civil service research is fine with me, it will take my entire turnset
- don´t bother with no tech trading, Mitiu, there is only archery and mono available
- on foreign affairs, I´d like to become Hindu when possible, because Gandhi and Pericles are following that faith, what do You guys think?

We have Hereditary rule, don't we? That does it for me: no need for pyramids. We'll capture them later.

Peri and Gandhi make it sound like Shiva is the winning number.

I think some better units is no bad idea. Like to keep the warriors for MP duty with hereditary rule. But I kinda prefer to put decent stuff on potential frontlines or areas an AI could reach in a turn or two with galleys.

Agreed on the mids - 20 turns is a long investment for +3 beakers per spy.

CS sounds fine - we have a strong capital/weaker other cities, which would make it pay well.

Think Hindu or no religion both work well. Although if we build up our military we could happily go confucian - with a decent military we have nothing to fear from those 2 goons - we don't need to trade as we're going to steal all their tech anyway? :)

- what was our statement on the pyramids? would take ~20 turns in the cap, I´m not sure it would give us much skip em
- civil service research is fine with me, it will take my entire turnset okay by me

this early, I like to save the spy points to start revolts in the city right before the attack.

preturn: first, some criticism:
-the brand new captured barb city wont need monument, we are creative, change it to granary
- I see 4 workers around Scumhampton, while they lack in other locations
- why is there a cottage on the dye near happytowne?

So what I do:
+ micromanage our cities a bit and start a settler in our capital for future great idiot farm
+ send the sitting spy to germany
+ change research to archery, due in only 1 turn
+ Cretinburg resumes building half finished temple for happyness
+ I see the point with all that ziggurats under construction, we want spy points, so I leave these
->press enter

turn 1: archery finishes, onto civil service
Happytowne finishes barracks, start building some archers
change espionage spending, gandhi and pericles get 1 point each as a gift :)

turn 2: our workboat in india has finished its exploring duty, I delete it to save money
freddi finished monarchy, after some debate I trade it for CoL, so he can build us some courthouses in his cities ;)
immediately revolt to hereditary rule (we can switch to caste when we revolt to bureaucrazy)

turn 3: :coffee:

turn 4: I secretly choped a forrest for the library in Scumhampton, it gets doubled ´cause we are creative!!

turn 5: Scumhampton finishes lib, start granary and switch to full growth, I will whip it at size 4
thinking about it, I have set all of our cities on growth since we are monarchs :mischief:

turn 6: Idiot Acadamy finishes settler, starts on another worker, sry for not growing the cottages for another 3 turns

turn 7: GreatIdiot Farm founded + trade Clams to gandhi for Gems!!

idiotfarmqm9.jpg

turn 8: Cretinburg finishes temple, goes back on military duty

turn 9: :coffee:

turn 10 attempt to steal calendar from freddy after waiting for 50% discount -- failed OMG !!, start 2 new spies pronto
+ whip granny in Scumhampton

spiesns9.jpg

turn 11: I have built 6 archers by now for defense, time to go on the offense, start our first swordsmen at the Acadany

turn 12: after burning 40 gold our research is back at break even @ 60%

turn 13: gandhi wants Alphabet as a gift, I give it to him as everybody knows it and it improves our relations bigtime
+ whip a granny at Sea Views

turn 14: our 4 biggest cities finish their buildings, so this is a good time to stop playing

summary:
- I built fine archers for city protection, and granarys in our new cities for faster growth.
- Civil service will be finished in 2 turns, maybe metal casting next??
- Spies are on road to germany, trying to steal calendar and construction if possible
- Start building an Army. We are paying 6gpt for units as of now, maybe delete and/or upgrade some warriors?
- Happyness is no problem now, but health is (but fish will be online soon)

For the raised point: there is a cottage near Happytowne on dyes because we have some dyes anyways up there and plantations don't come for a while.

Btw do we lose those spy points when we get a steal?

Good job with the happy juice, now we can go big.

Nice turns there Wenz - that gems deal is a really nice bonus! :)

Closing in nicely on the all powerful Civil Service...

Do like that great idiot farm - that's gonna be great!

Btw do we lose those spy points when we get a steal?

We don't AFAIK. Which is good! :)

Given that I played 2 sets ago, is it AKs turn? Just checking as I'm unsure what the roster would do now.

I have it. we will be back on regular revised roster after my set. Unless there is great dissension amongts us, I think I'll start gearing up for war. I'd have put the hammers into vultures rather than archers, but that's just me. :crazyeye:

I'm pretty sure EP is like money. You use it and it goes away. will try to get a screenie of this.

anectdotal - better chance of stealing in non-capital. I forget why. then again, I may be nuts.
