Split units?

I don't know if this has been suggested before, but does anyone else think that units should be able to be split up among hexagons? Like, if I have a a full-strength unit, I can split it up into two half-strength units. I figure this would be good if you want to perform flanking manuevers on an enemy army.

I suspect, however, that this might lead to either SOD style combat, or unit-sprawl.

I think it would rarely be worth doing. The entire gain from technology is to get higher strength units. A strength 10 units is much better than 2 strength 5 units.

They did talk about a "Flanking bonus" for attackers surrounding a unit, so it would help.

The way Civ combat systems normally work, 2 strength 5 unit with a +15% strength bonus from extra flanking would do far less damage, and suffer far more in return, than a single strength 10 unit without the bonus.

Also; if its only half a unit on a flank, why should it give the full bonus?

A system like this would be very messy and confusing, for no clear gain.

the only gain it could give would be to use it to spam ranged attacks, ranged units don't get hurt when they attack at long range, so reducing thier strength has a lower effect than it would on say melee units. plus the random chance can make it worthwhile. Although i personally wouldn't like it, to messy as ahriman says.

Which either won't be useful (because half strength means half damage) or will be an exploit.

no i don't think so, destroyers with 50 ranged attack do about 3 damage, trebuchets do about 3 damage as well. Chances are half a destroyer would still do 3 damage. Least thats the way it seems to me. course i could be completley wrong. :P

If all ranged units did the same damage regardless of their ranged attack value, then what would be the point of ranged attack strength? [And indeed, why would a cannon be any better than a catapult?]

Also, I'd note that you've seen a destroyer do X damage to a Battleship while a trebuchet did Y damage to longswordsmen.

Indeed thats why i added that last little bit about my cahnces of being wrong are not low at all. But there not amazingly high either.

Units have about 10 health, units in combat always seem to do at least some damage (in integers its always 1 or 2 or 3 not 0.1234512387), so if you could split one archer into 10 archers (or simply have 10 regular archers) is it possible for them to destroy a tank?, I should hope not, but you can never tell till it happens.
