Squatting

I thought this thread was gonna be about exercise form. Huge disappointment, needless to say. I try to squat daily with some added weights. Helps keep me in shape.

I'm quite dissappointed at your response honestly. Actually, aside from the funny comment by Jolly, only Arwon and Hrothbern bothered to make a direct point to the OP.

Nobody that squatted a piece of land, and build a house on it ?

Some U.S. states know of a legal concept known as adverse possession in which squatted piece of land eventually becomes property of the squatters, provided it is abandoned.

Aren't many ghetto's squatted areas ?
I think then especially about big cities in countries where there is still a urbanisation process ongoing because the rural areas generate more children than the food productivlty rates increase and rates per farmer are increasing..

That is perhaps a grey zone. I'm not particularly well informed about the favela's in Brazil for instance, though it seems that it could have been Terra Nullius prior to their construction, if we can call it as such.

No experience with squatting. I have the impression there is not so much squatting going on here nowadays. I do know a few people who have done anti-squatting: cheaply, temporarily renting a place (without rental protection) so that it is occupied and is not allowed to be squatted.

I've been hiding in your attic for years.
So You're the one who stole all the insulation from my wall and ate my cable line! I thought it was a squirrel but it was you! I even have pictures to prove it!

I don't have an attic, and if I did, I would have found you by now. ;)
Have you considered the possibility that your lack of belief in having an attic was why I was able to hide in it so long?

Exactly. Such laws are in place to encourage property owners to actually make use of the property they own, rather than just let it sit there unoccupied and disused. Basically, it's the state telling property owners "Hey, if you don't want your land to be stolen from you, you better make use of it".

They are squatted, in the sense that they are normally built on occupied state land. The owners don't have any rights over the land, though this is being changed in some places, nor, in fact, do they want them in many cases.

Do you happen to know which states do this?

Not at all. For the most part, in Rio anyway, they were public parks in the forest where construction is not allowed. That's why there were no regular constructions: they are not allowed! Favelas (the famous ones in the hills) are largely built in national and local parks or environmental preservation areas. No more Terra Nullius than Yosemite.

This leads to a very carioca paradox, where people who follow the law are completely constrained by often abusive building regulations and restrictions, which lead to ultra high property prices, but people who choose to completely ignore the law and build illegally are not only left alone but heavily subsidized by the rest of society.

If white people are squatters in America, are non-white people squatters in Europe?

:mischief:

No, as it turns out all those southern Greeks, southern Italians, Spaniards and Turks have been there for a very, very long time. Honestly, it's just very hard to take anyone for full who still uses 'wide peebles' as if it wasn't some arbitrary meaningless distinction. If Diogenes the Cynic, a man literally born in modern day Turkey, is a white dude, then Arabs and Berbers and Iranians and Syrians and Assyrians and so forth are most definitely white. If Turks and Arabs are somehow 'non-whites' then so are southern greeks.

That was not my point. Let me rephrase. If all people of European descent in America are squatters, is everyone of non-European descent in Europe a squatter?

Yes, I get your point. It revels the idiocy behind the intrinsic idea of squatting, or even more concrete, material ownership of land: The fact that somehow, living in a geographically seperate area for a certain amount of time gives you any sort of territorial claim over it. The Indians, just like the European settlers, migrated to America at some point. There are no true indigenous peoples, just a bunch of hairless monkeys that left Africa at some point.
