SPOTLIGHT:
Solopolis, Summer 2008
A group of men come up along the frozen river to the deserted capital. It is half covered in snow, and midsummer is one week past. The group wanders unhurriedly, and in broad daylight. There is nothing to see, and nobody can see them. All around them is the frozen wastes of endless snowdrifts. The sun is bright, but gives off almost no heat. The wind is billowing up snow, but the men carry on unaffected by the cold. They flick their fingers once in a while, presumably to cast a spell to keep warm. They wander into the city of Solopolis, straight to the Academy of Air. The building, marked by its topless towers is easily visible from miles around. From the ground, it is even more impressive, but now all the magic contained within seems dead and forsaken. The men approach the gates and begin casting a spell. They seem a bit shocked as the gates remain silent and shut. After a series of trials, they rest, visibly irritated. Then they talk for a while, but eventually leave. As they exit the city, more snow drifts down - the dark clouds have gathered anew to bring more snowy torment to this already wasted land.
Western Steppes, Spring 2008
A camp can be seen in the dark dusk. The still cold air blows harshly from the east, carrying the smoke both high and far. the band that rests by the fire wear either a warrior's armor, or the more casual outfit of an official. They are Delenlor scouts and Shaban clerks, bound for the distant Academy of Air in the far off capital Delril. They have set up camp for the night, but will move on the next day to reach the next road sentry a few miles further west. From there, the clerks will be relayed to the next and the next, making sure they have escort all the way to their final destination. They still have far to go, and with Shaba on the move, they are not sure how long it will take back...
Suddenly, the campfires go out at once, as if by magic. The startled men can only gather the noise and the smoke. Suddenly, screams are heard, and men begin to fall, clutching wounds or simply tripping on kettles and bedrolls. After a short while, there is nothing more than the dead bodies of soldiers and clerks. A few of the clerks run off in the distance, screaming in panic.
An hour after, on the sentry post a few miles west, the clerks are now dead. the Delenlorian soldiers are also gone.
Outside Deleril, Fall 2008
A band of darkly clad men walk out from the riverbed and onto a small hill below the capital city of Deleril. They have kept low not to be detected by locals and the swarm of Ramonian soldiers, both seemingly running wildly around the area. From what they make out, the Ramonians are not dropping by for a tea party. Some of them were witnessed setting fire to a farmer's house and raping his wife and daughters on the side of the road. The farmer and his sons were generally hanging about in the burning building. The darkly clad men were not moved by this either way, but maintained utmost discretion as they moved right along. They were here to enter the capital.
After they came up on the small hill, they could clearly see the city. They had seen proof of what they eyed before they came up there, but they came up anyway for the sight, and to have solid evidence. It was there before them: the magnificent Academy city of Deleril - engulfed in flames. Two huge winged beasts of pure flame were circling above it, spewing liquid fire onto the charred houses and streets. There was nothing living inside the walls. The men on the hill, seemingly satisfied, nodded and walked away as silently as they had come.
Global News: The cold weather is still creeping northwards. Now most of 2007 delenlor and Shaba is as frigid as Westshire was last year. The cold is still expanding with a level speed, which might mean more lands are plunged into the icy desert next year. In any case, the relentless cold has driven hundreds of thousands homeless, and many refugees are still trekking northwards and dotting the landscape with freshly frozen corpses.
The plague is still spreading. The list of nations affected are: Kingdom of Soltyria, Shaemar, Kulta, Horus, Ramon, Fa'el, WE and Rollux. The plague has only recently spread to the Empire, Horus and Rollux, and the effects here are still minimal.
Note that some nations now have radically altered borders and city placements. This reflects the change of the political status of the nations, meaning migration or worse has rendered territorial claims far off from the actual population either too vague or irrelevant. The cities of these nations are placed to reflect where most of the population are gathered.
Westerns Shelf: Starting with the relatively calm Western Shelf. Westshire has vanished from the map, the bulk of the population merged with what was known as Bellfern. Some of the refugees went over the border to Shaemar, but what remains of the army of Westshire has gone north. (Westshire units added to bellfern's military) Bellfern, toughly strained by the rush of hungry mouthes and freezing refugees stretched in every way to accomodate the displaced Shiremen. This went tremendously well, thanks to the charitable government of Bellfern and the bright minds of the Nature Adepts. Large "growhouses" were built to help the crops survive the cold. Outside these growhouses, equipped with windows on their roofs, the cold resistant crops were grown. These crops, highly nutritious and easy to grow are beginning to be a favourite of the people. They are most commonly known as "tates". Shaemar has rallied the population to settle the lands beyond the Dragon spine mountains. The earth here is very rich, as is to be expected after the scorching of the entire countryside. Moreever, the tiny settlements are boosted by Delenlor refugees who seem to be overjoyed at the chance of growing crops in peace, far away from the wartorn east.
Kulta: has left the Western Continent entirely. The capital and the Illusion Academy is moved to the Nether Islands in the new capital of, well, New Orzema. Their capture of the islands was, as expected, retaliated by the Empire. a fierce sea battle was fought outside the islands. The Kultan navy consisting of many smaller ships was badly outdone by the larger and stronger Empire ships. After a tiresome battle, the Empire was vicorious, but a few unexpected things made their victory less sweet. For one, Empire ships seemed to be attacked from under the waves suddenly, and high waves washed across the decks to sweep away tens of sailors at a time. What more, when the Empire navy sailed back, a thir of their fleet was severed from the rest in a storm and was never seen again... Kulta: (-165 Cv, -1250 B, -2100 AW, -350 HI) Empire: (-70 Ck, -50 Fr, -3400 LI, -400 B, -350 LB)
Heartlands: The Eastern Empire was particularily hard hit by the plague, but the nation is also wrecked by civil war. The reason for Barragh's return to his capital was due to a rebellion of one of his lieutenants. Upon return, they had taken the capital Rashal and fortified it. Barragh sent his men forward, and ruthlessly put down the rebellion. The lieutenant's head was put on a stake over the main gate and set aflame with an everburing flame by Barragh. The decoration has now degraded to a burning skull, but it still remains as a dead(ly) warning against any other would-be rebels. WE: (-900 LI, -300 HI, -200 LC, -50 HC) It is apparent that Barragh is less and less liked by the local population. For Horus, this incident has saved them from the onslaught for a precious while, and the nation has wxpanded peacefully west along the coast. Seth Dethos is also building a massive black tower in the center of his realm...
Ramon has invaded Delenlor! This came as an reaction to the "Betrayal of Eastern Gate" where the Academy of Life was lost. Ramon, simply enraged of their war ally's honourless behavious took arms to redeem the honour of the men who lost their lives in the three year long campaign to capture the Academy. The war was quick and dramatic. First, the eastern task force from Delenlor was cut off by a spreading front of burning grassland. The Delenlor general at the eastern front was pre-occupied with the war against the Eastern Empire, and could do nothing to prevent the coming of the Ramon army shortly thereafter. The western expedition to claim the lands west for Horus was hastily called back, and managed to return to Deleril before the Ramon army. The former was weary of the long journey, the latter was huge: counting ten thousand men. The battle was as quick and brutal as the invasion was. The horrified citizens of Deleril watched as their defendants were hewn down under a wave of storming Ramon soldiers. Soon, the beasts of pure flame came down on the city to ravage it by fire. The Academy was naturally reduced to cinder, forever lost and inredeemable. The entire city was burned to resemble an overfilled ashtray. Nothing was left behind but the charred hulk of the walls.
This caused a rush of migration of the Deleri. Already weary of war and the threat of the incoming winter, they packed up everything they could and sought a new home. Some went to Shaemar and Horus in the west. Most, though, went straight north into Ramon. Now the refugees have formed cities of their own inside the country that broke their own. The only thing that remains of Delenlor now is the army in the east that controls a strip of the western Steppes. What the Delenlor decides to do after this devastation remains to be seen. Also, will the refugees who have settled in Ramon be allowed to live in peace, or will the Ramonians still seek revenge for their fallen soldiers through spilling the blood of the innocents?
A startling news comes from the eastern front of Delenlor: the capture of on of the Triad, Trisan. He was captured while he was in hiding in one of the cities claimed by the Delenlor army. He was accompanied by a rather small retinue, but his baggage was large and bulky, not to mention spectacular. It was bars of solid gold: according to him bound for Rollux to fund a war against Pashawan. This information, as well as the capture of Trisan, just might give the ramins of Delenlor the chance to survive. (+3 spending points)
Steppes: Shaba has evacuated the southern reaches, and the people are made ready for a mass migration northwards. Already, the army is marching north to crush the Eastern Empire and secure land for the following Shabans. The army was also going to group with the Cairen Defenders, who made a daring outbreak just after the snow melted in the mountain pass. The Empire forces were hardly pressed between the two armies, and eventually had to pull back to regroup and avoid being cut off from the capital. Now the bulk of Shaba's army has reached the Cairen forces and formed a front aimed at Jaid. the Eastern Empire seem pressed, and the end of the Triad might be closer than expected. Shaba: (-450 LI, -600 SB, -150 HC, -15 A) Cairo: (-1550 CD) EE: (-1850 LI, -600 HI, -600 LC, -400 HC, -250 B, -350 LB) The Academy of Life is still in the city of Cairo, in the safekeeping of the city militia. These men, although only commoners, have sworn to protect the city until a new capital has been built and firmly established. The militia is huge, numbering thousands, and the Academy itself is guarded by the Life Adepts of Cairo.
Konahn: The barbarians in the Spine of the World seem calm and content. The Wild Walkers are concentrating more and more on structurizing and cataloging their magic and spells. Also, many of the Adepts are working with figurines, so-called totems. These magical artifacts are still completely unknown from the lands in the west, and also kept secret from the non-Adepts... The barbarian lord Konahn is content with letting the regions be ruled by local heroes, but keeps a sharp eye against any amassing of forces. So far, the situation is calm, and everyone seems to be happy. At least they don't have war, famine and plague.
Islands: The isles of Felaskhar was not attacked by the Empire this year, and have remained relatively calm. The waves are all natural, and the waters free from magical animation. Or are they? What goes on in the dark depths remains hidden from the eyes of the world...
I'm sure there are things missing in the update. Just go ahead and pepper me. I will be off to embrace the life-sucking oblivion.
