Is it possible to rid yourself of cities with a religion other your state's? For example, I'm Hindu, and I want to make them ENTIRE WORLD completely Hindu, especially my own cities. Anyway I can get rid of those few extra meaningless cults such as "Islam", "Buddhism", and "Christianity"? (joking, btw)

Furthermore, would that even be beneficial to my empire?

The only benefit is that the other religions shrine would stop collecting gold. Having other religions in your city allows you to build temples and cathedrals of that religion, and gives you happy faces from free religion civic. Diversity makes people happy... in civ4 world anyway. I too would like to see a "holy war" mod or a "persecute" option, to force out competing religions, and actually gain a significant benefit from having only one religion. But in the current setup, the religions presence is not negative except that it makes it a lil harder to spread your religion, and gives money to their shrine. But.... if you capture their shrine city in the end its your gold anyway. Having lots of religions everywhere does not make a big difference, as just having the religion does not mean that a neighbor civ has it as its state religion.
