Star Wars: The Mod Strikes Back

Exactly!! Very well stated!!!

These facts must be remembered when making the mod pack, so the units can be as realistic as possible. And about the doors, they definatley leave the ship weaker when open, but how strong are they when closed? I would assume that they're very strong because the ship is very good but i don't know for sure.

I hope i don't sound cynical or anything, but the biggst difference betwen the venator and the victory is that LUCAS DOESNT BELIEVE IN THE VICTORY.

Lucas is a moron for the last three films - i know we're making a str wars mod, so this may be seen as blasphemy, but if you think about it, what is more realistic:
- victory destroyer, upgraded to isd - mostly inferior ship, in 20 research upgraded to something reasonably good
- venator destroyer, upgrade to isd - awesome cool looking fear-inspiring ship, upgraded only slgihtly in 20 years

the EU makes more sense than the films, and for this we should follow the EU's representation of ship upgrades.
However, some EU stuff is complete sh**e - such as the eclipse star destroyer - a huge warship which was only really to defend the core world of palps which about a gazillion other destroyers. This EU was jsut incredibly stupid, and i suggest we miss it out.

It may have some references that te venator was used by the empire, but this was only while it was being upgraded. There are NO venators in episodes 4,5 or 6 - and reasonably there should be, if it was an assault ship that was almost as powerful as the ISD. So obviously it was deeme uterrly shoddy and removed from service.
I haven't read the unit list, i'm sure it's very good, (no offence meant, im too busy with stuff, downloads are slow due to cruddy internet, and im not quite sure how many viruses have broken into my version of excel...), but this is a list of imperial star cruisers (im going by an earlier unit list)
Big ships (pardon the tacky naming, in a rush)
- Victory Star Destroyer
- Imperial star destroyer
- Imperial (II) star Destroyer (if you need another one)
- Super class star destroyer
LESSER SHIPS
-Carrack Cruiser
- Lancer Frigate
- Interdictor Cruiser
- something else that looks cool but ive forgotten the name of

4 of each type, one for each age. easy. make them have different stats, so that say isd is tougher (defence and HP) than the VSD, but the VSD is strogner (attack etc). lesser ships are stronger in total, but big ships carry fighters and stuff. Whatever works, really.

Although there are no Venators in Episodes IV, V, and VI, I've read that they were still in heavy use. The reason they were not in the movies is because the movies were depicting the best fleets and so on. I don't think they would have a Venator in Darth Vaders personal fleet, unless he specifically uses for one mission or something, although this hasn't happened.

Plus there is the fact that the Venator wasn't in the original movies. But these facts are made official by the new films and text references.

According to most sources there are more than 25,000 Imperial Star Destroyers in the Imperial fleet. Now the Imperial Star Destroyer is big and is used in important missions. But doesnt 25,000+ seem small for a galactic power with millions of inhabited planets? This means that there are dozens of other types of vessels which number in the thousands or even millions. So why would the Empire throw out the Venator if they have already been built in large numbers and they proved themselves as very powerful in the Clone Wars? The Venator, according to a Star Wars online encyclopedia and other sources, was used several decades after the Clone Wars and during Galactic Civil War. The fact is that it was still being used, it just wasn't seen.

But this is just for the ACTUAL Star Wars universe. If we gave the Empire all of the units that it had plus those that it used from the Republic, it would give the Empire a huge advantage. So there are differences that must be made. Plus it would be really hard make a tech tree with all of those ships for the Empire.

So i suggest just using the Venator and various other units for the Republic only, for the sake of gameplay.

Sorry for jumping in. But this is not neccesaringly true. Rebel units could be a lot stronger than others. Tech trees can contain a lot of units. Look at TCW by El Justo or Rhye's of Civilization.

Good point, but usually the Rebels have the best fighters and small ships. However their infantry are overated (I believe). Despite the fact that they potray them as excellant in the films, these are only films. In the novels and in the actual reality they are good yes, but Stormtroopers are on average better than rebel troops. It is unfortunate that the films potray the Stormtroopers as easily killed. They are not the Emperors shock troopers for nothing.

But dont get me wrong though, the rebels do have the best fighters, excellant small and medium sized capital ships (such examples are the Nebulon-B frigate and Mon Calamari cruisers.) Though the Nebulon frigates were actually stolen Imperial ships they were more important to the Rebels. But most of their strenght lies in their fighters and a few warships

I always thought empire troops were better personally. Yes the rebels fighters/pilots are a lot better than the empires. Is the death star out now?
Personally, I think it should be a nuke unit.

Having the Death Star as a nuke unit makes sense. But it should be able to be beaten other wise it would be unfair cause the Empire already is probably the strongest in the warships and walkers.

Have a defensive rating. Something like 15 so it would be strong enough by itself but should be guarded.

The Death Star could be used as either a nuke unit or a nuke carrier like the Civ3 nuke sub. I personally think it should have an attack of 1 because it wouldn't engage in ship-to-ship combat although in the Battle of Endor it did destroy a couple of Rebel ships using the superlaser. Defense should be like 50% higher than other warships. It also should get a high hp bonus like +5.

If it is used as a nuke unit, you could only bombard with it once and when it bombards the whole Death Star will fly down from the sky to nuke the planet destroying itself with it. But if it is used as a nuke carrier, you could build superlaser nuke units to load up into the Death Star and it could bombard with those. However, I don't know about the AI using the superlaser units effectively.

That's a good idea. I would have an attack of 1 also. I think it should have all those features.

I agree with the idea of having it be a nuke carrier. But how powerful do you think the superlaser should be?

Exactly what i had in mind. LOL

if it has an attack of one, what would be the point of having superlasers inside? that'd be like a stormtrooper standing on top firing his pistol...

the death star could have a seperate bombard anim - turbolaser firing. make it do like alot of damage, but have a tiny range - one square or soemthing. This represents the idea that the death star shoots (bomabrds) with a lower shot than its planet killing ray to attack ships. VERY low defense rating compared to other ships - they were both killed by snubfighters...

Anyone have a blue print of the original JSF? Or have any clue as top where the firing points are? I'm assuming it is twin lasers like all Lucas' fighters.
I've mostly finished the unit except for the attack animation. I stopped because I couldn't be bothered to redo all the textures twice in the same weekend. The first set (used in default, fidget, run, death animations) uses a blue based texture. This allows the death animation to include flames. But since everyone insisted that it had to have BLUE lasers, the attack animation must have a different civ palette and different textures (in RED).

I'm hoping sometime this week to finish this unit, so some guidance on where the guns are would be great.

Well, you don't have to go through the blue-laser trouble on this one, because it had red lasers. As for the lasers, they come out in twin laser ports here:

Oh? I posted a link to my render of the same fighter and 3-4 people chimed and insisted it have blue lasers, were they refering to the ETA2 even though that is not the one I linked to?
