Stellaris

regarding that comic, i started a new game and did not go for my usual warmonger purge all aliens playstyle. instead i went for the opposite and build federations, sign migration treaties etc. i found the peaceful playstyle much easier, however the game becomes incredibly boring because there is barely anything to do. my current federation has 5 members (2 are factions i liberated) and there is no threat from any neighbour. however i also can't expand anymore, i can just add more members to my federation via liberating factions. i will probably abandon this game and go back to my old purge the alien playstyle.

Nah, I can get the joke for things I totally disagree with.
It just doesn't have any punch or wit about it.
So it's not really that I didn't get the joke after all, it's just that the joke is totally flat.

How many Fallen Empires are in your game, Ailedhoo?

I just had the sleeper awakened event as well for a FE that was on the other side of the map. A couple of years earlier I had forced a nation to be released and automatically was guaranteeing them and of course this is the nation that they decided to declare war on. My main fleet of 20k was accidentally caught and died before any ships could attempt to flee.

Will continue the game for a bit as whilst the war is definitely lost I don't think I'll lose any systems from the peace treaty.

Four with two awakened.

Also I ended the Ironman game due to facing my doom/game crashing when I decided to try leading the League of Non-alignment; I was between them both and did not match their military power.

Spoiler death :

Now I am trying a Commonwealth of Man walk-through... which includes meeting the U.N.E.

Spoiler fellow humanity :

Spoiler outdated map :

I should note that the UNE are next to not just a Fallen Empire but an Enigmatic Observers; for the Commonwealth of Man this raises a particular issue of strategy...

So far, in my vanilla Pacifist/Fan-Xenophile newt game, I managed to find another PFX species to ally with and I'm currently leading in tech, due to my plethora of systems as a peaceful bureacracy. So far though, I've only discovered one Fallen Empire on the other side of the galaxy.

With the rise of the War in Heaven, Paradox really needs to provide better support to those that the non-aligned. Maybe non-aligned worlds can jointly build a space station where aliens could work out their differences peacefully. It would be a port of call, a home away from home for diplomats, hustlers, entrepreneurs, and wanderers. It might wind up being a dangerous place, but it could be the last, best hope for peace.

Jests aside, I had something interesting happen in a game the other day. An empire with whom I was at war fielded a flotilla of Fallen Empire ships under the empire’s own flag. The Fallen Empires themselves had not awakened nor even interacted with me previously. I have no idea how my enemy got Fallen Empire ships. Anyone know how or why this would happen?

I have decided to start again, this time as a new power focus on fanatic spiritualism and militarism; the Apd, whose naming is based on Ancient Egyptian.

Spoiler the Solar Kingdom :

Anyhow I found something interesting: guarded by vast forces...

Spoiler what is it? :

Spoiler is that unclaimed?! :

It appears I have a prize to work towards...

I know its ill manners to double post but... my Seshem game ended when a defense pact leaded me into war against not one but TWO advance AI powers, who so happen to be the Cypp (who came to overwhelm my fleet) and the Muta. After my fleet bitten the dust guess who decided they wanted some extra room for their labs?

Spoiler space parrots :

So now I am to play as a new power, who are to be collective fanatically materialist. The species are known as...

The Quodumbra

Some bits I manage to screen-shot include...

The scientist who went on holiday...

Spoiler the Exile :

A strange, black orb...

Spoiler strange black orb :

Result?

Spoiler black orb result :
I took the peaceful route, helped its calculation and got sentient AI free.

Also humanity is a fallen empire that has... a rather 'interesting' choice of ethics.

Spoiler if Trump ran a fallen empire :

O and the power I played last time ended up invaded by ourselves and was henceforth made into a tributary.

Spoiler the Solar Kingdom sets :

Anyhow: the current map.

Spoiler the galaxy :

The Umbranmare Hive will continue its expansion!

baparap

Spoiler :

btw Djomar Crusaders is an awakened asendancy

I sort of remember somebody mentioning a strategy to defeat the unbidden, but I couldn't find it

so help?

EDIT: Turned out that fallen empire took care of them :/

The Unbidden and the Prethoryn each use basically one kind of armament and one kind only. Thus they can be overcome by adapting your designs. I think the Unbidden are energy and shields while the Prethoryn are missiles and armour.

The Unbidden fleet power is MASSIVELY overrated. They are mainly using shield and energy weapons - use torpedoes (which ignore shields), hellfire guns (which have such a fire rate they prevent shields from regenerating), coilgun/artillery (which ignore a good part of shield and armor) and disruptor (doing massive shield damage) and you can really tear through their armies. Protect yourself with shields (their weapons ignore armor IIRC, so shields are better).
I managed to annihilate about 600-800k of their forces with 100-150k of mine, losing about half my ships in the process. I can rebuild my forces far faster than they get reinforcements, and I actually feel so barely threatened by them that I let them expand so they eat my competitors, and I even started a war against the FE they have battered for a while - that's how easy they are to counter.

Spoiler :

The teal empire, the leftmost arm of the galaxy and a good chunk of the inner right arm (right above the double-eagle) were part of the Sakyt Arbitrator just before the latest war, where I nabbed a good chunk of their territory and released the teal empire (the Sakyt Arbitrator and the blue circle inside their borders, are both awakened FE). I was much more afraid of them (they had just as much territory as me, and had a large advance in both technology and fleet power), but they seemingly had bad ship design, as they lost most of their forces to the Unbidden. I thought it was better to stop the Unbidden before they became unstoppable, so I sent all my fleet to fight them, but after the battle described above, I realized they just weren't that dangerous if I used the right weapons, so I went back to capitalize on the opportunity to have them push through the FE on one side :p

(and yes, I use a mod to remove sector limits. I just find them annoying and frustrating, and it makes the game boring because there is nothing to do)

The Prethoryn are their opposite : lots of armor and missile weapons. Just use arc weapons (which ignore armors), tons of Point Defense/Flak, and lots of armor (I'm not sure, but I think their weapons do raw damage, so armor actually reduces it a ton). You'll probably be able to tear through them even more than the Unbidden, as you can actually destroy their offensive power before it reaches you.

hellfire guns

see I've never heard about hellfire guns before now

last time, when I asked about the prethoryns, I got advise to use lances, which I didn't have

I don't understand how you can plausibly get all the technologies you need - and building your fleet up to max - before the end crisis starts

nice empire though, btw

it is not the weapon that is important but the bonuses it grants, i.e. you need armour penetration against the scourge as well as point defence. you can make massive leaps in technology via wars by researching debris.

Well, the lances are pretty high-tech, rather end-of-game stuff, so you might not have them. Hellfire guns come much sooner.
As of how I can get this tech, well two main reasons :
1) I'm not using sectors, it improves quite a bit my efficiency.
2) It's rather late-game (2500 or so), so I've had plenty of time to tech up.
3) I'm militarist, so I got weapon tech more often.

I also tend to optimize a bit my empire when it comes to tech (I don't colonize planets which are 15 or less).

What mod is this, thinking about jumping back into Stellaris (haven't played for a few months) and would like the sector limit removed as it is very annoying.

You don't need a specific mod. You can just edit "00_define.lua" (it's raw text), search for the line "CORE_SECTOR_SYSTEM_CAP" and put whatever number you want. A mod is just cleaner way to do it, so it doesn't alter original game files and so on.

Thanks, will try this when I start back up :goodjob:

yes, you can adjust your economy a lot better with multiple sectors, i usually have at least a smallish mineral sector, a medium energy sector and a giant science sector.

Also another question

what determines how much war score war goals cost (mainly ceding planets)?

Most of those I go to war with cost around 30 per planet (sometimes as low as 20, sometimes close to 50), but taking from fallen empires is usually cheaper than 15 per planet, and for the other empires taking planets from me is usually just 3 war score.
