A Matter of Faith
Has nothing to do with religion, honest.
"Close the door," came a steely voice[1], echoing across the large, windowless room[2]. The room was dark, as there were no candles. Ha Fei[3] suddenly felt reluctance, but there was no turning back now. He had not felt anxiety since several years before, back when he was still taking The Highest Examination in the Academy. Hearing the voice made him feel it again.
The door creaked to a close, and the little light that trickled in through the corridor windows was gone. All there was now was darkness. Fear crept into Ha Fei Tsu's skin, but it was not the great wall of black that scared him.
He took one step forward. The sound reverberated in the room, which was supposedly made of pure stone and marble. He took another step forward, and then another, and yet another. He found that the low ringing at every step took some getting used to.
He took a deep breath in and put his mind away from distractions. What was important was the matter at hand. He continued moving forward. The letter he received that morning, the same one that had instructed him to go to that room in the first place, gave a specific number of steps to follow once inside the room. It even gave a specific length for every one.
Normally he would not just follow the call of an anonymous letter. However, that one was special. It may not have had a real signature, but the drop of blood at the corner of the page was all the signature it needed, something he found out early on in his time at the throne. All of a sudden he realized that he already took one or two steps too many.
"You took too many steps, Lord-Magistrate," came the steely voice once more. It had some measure of respect, but it all could have been Ha Fei Tsu's imagination. Everyone knew that even the monarch treaded lightly around the Rabbit Snare. "But it is forgivable. Let us now talk business."
