StKNES5: A New Lease on NES

Emperor Heizei sat quietly in a lotus position, watching the sun rise from the hills to the West of the capitol city, Kyoto. His gaze was unfocused, yet he could see, in his mind's eye, the lands beyond, or at least how he imagined they looked. The island Nihon was centered upon - Honshu - was quickly falling under his control. Shikoku and Kyushu were already under Nihonese control. But what of the world beyond? Korea and Beijing were not so much more advanced than Nihon. The mainland, for all its impressive size, was not so impressive in other regards. And it was already peopled. As he searched his thoughts on the matter, he found no real desire for anything there. Perhaps, someday, Nihon would found a port for trade with the mainland peoples, but it was a trifling matter.

No, Heizei was more interested in what lay in the direction which he now gazed: the East. What was out in that giant ocean? Was Japan on the edge of the world? Did the Sun rise first on her? Or was there something out there? He resolved that his sailors must gain greater experience in open-ocean sailing. They would someday find out what was out there. And what of the South and the North? As one went farther North, it got colder, and father South, warmer. Surely going far enough North would yield little land of value, but what of to the South? There had to be something there as well. The expeditions from Kyushu had encountered small islands. Perhaps... perhaps they would find something larger.

As Heizei thought about it, he was confronted with a conundrum. There was so much to explore and conquer, yet also so much to develop and build. Which to focus on? There were only a limited number of people. As his thoughts turned to this matter, he considered the number of his subjects. After allowing his mind to work on the issue, he made a hand gesture, still gazing out his window. A servant - always on hand - approached, and bowed. "Send word that the Gods have told me that it is the destiny of the people of Nihon to grow and prosper, and populate all the lands we have found. The government will offer monetary benefits in the form of lower taxes to those who heed the call of the prophecy of the Gods."

The attendant repeated his words for confirmation, before bowing and departing to begin the process of sending news to the public. Heizei smiled softly to himself - he would solve the conundrum by doing both.

OOC: Kamilian, starting a trade route costs 2 econ levels, not 2 econ points, right?

From: Eire
To: Cantivelliaunii

The clans of Eire grow stronger with each year, though we still hold reverence over yee. We propose a Non-Aggresion Pact under which both our lands can continue to prosper without fear.

Symphony D: Nice story. Trade costs 2 economy points, and give 1 econ point every other turn to both nations.

Giio: St=Story; K=Kamilian1(the mod's name); NES=NeverEndingStory
The two nations are Lesotho (the more southern one) and Zambia (the more northern one).

OOC: Update will be in 3 days.

Added a list of cities on the first page of the thread, below all the nation stats.
For overseas trade routes, you must both have cities that are blue, which indicates water access, on that list.
Symphony D., I will allow a trade between Beijing, which has no water access, and you, Japan. Also, you can choose which of your two seaside cities (Kyoto and Kitakyushu) to send to either or both of the trade routes you're opening.

To Shanghai
From Fuzhou

We agree to your NAP and also offer a MPP and a trade route.

The ship slipped through the Irish sea as fog enveloped it, obstructing all view. Guidance was not a problem though, fires had been set up on the Scottish coast to guide the ship as well as prevent it from running aground. Faolán sat in the center of the ship, a stoic look on his face. They now were on the same island as the Brits, a militaristic bunch of Angles. How they would deal with each other worried him; the troops of Eire were already on the move again, the location of British troops was unknown, for now.

Hundreds of people lined between the villages of Lurgan and Portadown, awaiting the game that was about to begin. Hurling had been around for as long as anyone could remember, an old Gael game that was very popular. The teams, the men of one village against the men of the other village, were supposed to knock the large rock around with sticks into the other village. The people cheered on as the game began, watching a rock go flying around the hillside, falling into sloughs and brush, than hitting someone in the head. Men often were tripped, kicked, tackled, and smacked with the stick. The game continued for hours; the teams running back and forth along the hillside, until finally they rock went flying into Lurgan, landing in a thatched house.

We will agree to a NAP once you give us your settlements in Scotland.

When are orders due? 4th of July weekend is eating up my time.

From: Eire
To: Cantivelliaunii

Give Scotland to you? Are you mad! I feel you underestimate the might of Eire. One day you shall tremble in our splendor and wish you hadn't been so arrogant and miserly.

From Cantivelliaunii
To Eire:
Ha! The day that we tremble to you will be the same day we abandon our beliefs in all our various gods in favor of just one! In other words, for your less-advanced minds, NEVER!

Also, you can choose which of your two seaside cities (Kyoto and Kitakyushu) to send to either or both of the trade routes you're opening.
Technically Kyoto's inland on a lake and Osaka's the seaside city, but Japan is small and map borders are thick so we'll ignore that. Kitakyushu.

Orders submitted.

Orders and story later this evening.

Byzantium
DIPLOMACY:

From emperor Leo I
To Dacia:
My father has done wisely when signing a NAP with you. To ensure that our friendship will be a lasting and productive one, I propose that we also start a trade route between our nations! We would pay one economy point and you would pay the other one that are required to start the route! It would most certainly benefit both of our nations greatly. Will you agree to it?

***

Byzantium
ORDERS:
-Increase economy.
-Pay for the economy point to start a trade route with Dacia, if they agree to it.
-Expand towards west along the coast mediterranian sea with 300 soldiers killing off all resisting barbarians coming their way.
-Start a GREAT PROJECT, the “project of three reforms”. It is explained in the story below. Brings me +1 education, +1 culture, +1 economy LEVEL.

***

An age of reforms begins!

The crowd stood in awe. All 1000 citizen that lived in the city of Byzantium stood there and raised their hat and bowed one last time for the late emperor Valentin as his coffin was revealed at the central agora of the city. Valentin would be long remembered; it was him who established the empire of Byzantium several decades ago. It was him who had stabilized the nation, made it a real country, foudned the empire. When his coffin was taken away and the Byzantine people took a last glare at their late emperor, most of them truly mourned.

But out of darkness always rises a new hope.

After the coffin was taken away, Valentin’s son Leo received the crown of the emperor. He was Leo I, later known as Leo the Reformer.

“People of Byzantium!” he spoke, “my beloved father has passed away and we all mourn for him. But the fact that we respect his life work does not mean that we would have to stick to his old ways. Oh no, this is the time for great reforms, and great reforms I shall do, reforms which my father, despite the fact that he was a great man and a great leader, was too afraid to accomplish! I will start these reforms by declaring myself "Imperator Graecorum", Emperor of the Greeks! That’s right, Byzantine will start expanding to the west! But that is just the beginning, for my reforms shall be so great that world has never seen anything that could be compared to it! I want to make Byzantine the envy of the entire world!”

And the reforms which took place looked as follows:

EMPEROR LEO I’s “PROJECT OF 3 REFORMS”:

1) Political reform: Military is divided into 4 divisions, each having their own general. These generals will form the tetrarchy, a group that will give me advice and perhaps even decide some things for the emperor’s behalf! Still the emperor will, of course, always have the last word.

2) Cultural reform: Our people are not stupid but they could always be wiser! Let there be douzens of libraries build around the empire! Also, arts and sculpture should be engouraged, especially when they support the emperor and his decisions politically. Here is a good example of “good” culture, it’s a sculpture that shows the newly appointed tetrarchy in all it’s glory:
tetrarchs.jpg

3) Economical reform: Farmers have wheat and when we move more towards west we might end up finding gods know what great luxuries and resources.. but we can’t move them as easily as we could if we had better roads! I want an all-around road network to be build to any place where we can get goods, minerals, resources, etc. Once these roads are built, our economy should get improved greatly!

And with these reforms, Leo I “the Reformer” became eventually even more popular than his father had been.

Travancore Orders:
