stNNES7: Worlds and Empires

The Elders were having a meeting, discussing the war in Europe.
They had mostly been betting on who would win, when one of them proposed that they should join the war and attack the Germans.
-This would be a good way for us to make a name for ourselves. We would be feared across the world, everyone would look up to us!
-I have heard that the Germans are centuries ahead of us in warfare techniques - we would have no chance!
-But they are in war with several other nations, their troops can't be everywhere at once. our attack would completely surprise them.
-Let's not fight about this. We all seem to have different views about this, so let us vote about it instead.
They agreed that this was a good idea. After all but one of the Elders had voted, there were five votes for, and five votes against.
The last voter had a hard decision to make.
-So... Are we going to war?
-I think... I think the chances for victory are too slim to be worth risking the lives of our citizens for. I vote against.
The room was filled with both relieved and dissatisfied faces.
-No war, then.

Bah, I always have these great ideas for stories, but then I wait until the last minute and they end up like the above :/

The Great City of Knossos

Trade, the lifeblood of nations. Trade has created the city of Knossos and trade will continue to make it prosper. Ever since the early days of the Minoan Republic, Knossos was one of its most important centers and over the years, the capital has become one of the most important centers in the mediterranean, perhaps the world.

Stratigicly located in the heart of the Eastern Mediterranean at the entrance to the Aegean Sea, Knossos is an important stop for merchants of the west and east. This has caused a great influx in trade and ship traffic. This caused some problems but they were relieved by the completion of the Grand Harbor of Knosos, allowing a greater influx of trade to enter the city from the sea. Now many galleys can remained docked at Knossos before they set sail for more distant markets.

Speaking of distant markets, the goods of many nations arrive in Knossos every year. It is quite obvious that trade from Greece and Syria goes through Knossos on the way to western markets such as Italy and Iberia. But the trade network expands far beyond that. Ships from Britian arrive to trade tin, an combined with copper from Cyprus, allows for a bronze trade, but as the world adapts to iron, this trade will decline. Products arrive from as far east as Persia, where the luxurys of the east enter the western world.

As the Minoan trade network is ever expanding, it needs more markets. Just recently, the Kingdom of Illium merged with the Republic of Minoa. This allowed Minoan markets and trading posts to expand into northern Asia Minor and the Black Sea. The reasoning of trading posts, was the catalyst behind the Minoan expansion into the islands of the Mediterranean. By possessing certain islands, the Minoans could have trading posts along the Mediterranean, all centered around Knossos.

Knossos is not all about trade, there is a developing Minoan Culture. Unique about Minoa is the tradition of bull leaping. A dangerous game where a man would try to leap over a bull's horns and land on the bull's back, sometimes doing a handstand. This has become a popular event, as stadiums are filled whenever this even occurs. It even attracts the attention of merchants passing through, who bring the tales of the game back to their nations.

The Minoan Republic continues to expand and prosper. Bright time are ahead for this seafaring nation.

Orders sent. Sorry that I didn't have time to finish the voyage story.

Nice stories, all.

La Roi d'Nord, we (or I, anyway) begin waiting for the update. Do not disappoint us.

The horses had been skittish and uneasy when tied up the previous evening, but their handlers attributed this only to the new regions in which they had stopped. It was humid here, and warmer, and the horses were not yet accustomed to the climate. However, the horses were skittish for a different reason. Of course, the soldiers did not reveal themselves until well after nightfall.

Numbering perhaps 120, the settlers were entirely unprepared for an onslaught from a numerically-superior force in the dead of night. Caught by surprise, the men were unable to reach their horses, and, though they fought bravely, they were soon cut down, and the women pressed against the ground and raped, then their throats slit alongside the children.

In their brutality, the soldiers failed to notice the escape of two warriors on horseback. They set off into the hills to the north. This was what had been awaited. The massacre would be avenged with war.

Of course, there was no command for the actions of these soldiers – they acted on the orders of their captain only, who believed it crucial to cleanse the land of settlers such as these. Nonetheless, blood would run thick in the years to come.

No revised orders now, so y'all can post what evil things your doing. Those of you who have failed to send orders yet, my patience is thin. I might be nice and let you send them. Might.

BOTH of them should update! And then we'll choose which version we like better in a combination of a democratic poll and a military coup d'etat.
