The Great City of Knossos
Trade, the lifeblood of nations. Trade has created the city of Knossos and trade will continue to make it prosper. Ever since the early days of the Minoan Republic, Knossos was one of its most important centers and over the years, the capital has become one of the most important centers in the mediterranean, perhaps the world.
Stratigicly located in the heart of the Eastern Mediterranean at the entrance to the Aegean Sea, Knossos is an important stop for merchants of the west and east. This has caused a great influx in trade and ship traffic. This caused some problems but they were relieved by the completion of the Grand Harbor of Knosos, allowing a greater influx of trade to enter the city from the sea. Now many galleys can remained docked at Knossos before they set sail for more distant markets.
Speaking of distant markets, the goods of many nations arrive in Knossos every year. It is quite obvious that trade from Greece and Syria goes through Knossos on the way to western markets such as Italy and Iberia. But the trade network expands far beyond that. Ships from Britian arrive to trade tin, an combined with copper from Cyprus, allows for a bronze trade, but as the world adapts to iron, this trade will decline. Products arrive from as far east as Persia, where the luxurys of the east enter the western world.
As the Minoan trade network is ever expanding, it needs more markets. Just recently, the Kingdom of Illium merged with the Republic of Minoa. This allowed Minoan markets and trading posts to expand into northern Asia Minor and the Black Sea. The reasoning of trading posts, was the catalyst behind the Minoan expansion into the islands of the Mediterranean. By possessing certain islands, the Minoans could have trading posts along the Mediterranean, all centered around Knossos.
Knossos is not all about trade, there is a developing Minoan Culture. Unique about Minoa is the tradition of bull leaping. A dangerous game where a man would try to leap over a bull's horns and land on the bull's back, sometimes doing a handstand. This has become a popular event, as stadiums are filled whenever this even occurs. It even attracts the attention of merchants passing through, who bring the tales of the game back to their nations.
The Minoan Republic continues to expand and prosper. Bright time are ahead for this seafaring nation.
