Wow, should go more in end game. My games normally finish around infantry.
:sarcasm: Big talk usually comes from small men. I mean we know now, you have said that a couple of times

About the Cossack, you're all right that it's kind of balls as far as UU's go, but then you have to figure... Cavalry is *still* a dominant strategy. Beeline for Rifling, build lots and lots of Cavalry (or build lots and lots of Cuirassiers and upgrade to Cavalry) and even with the delay Cavalry got in BTS you can still take out a large amount of land.

So if Cavalry in and of itself is good, and Cossacks are *strictly better* than Cavalry, then Cossacks are good. Are they brokenly overpowered? No, not at all. But not every Unique Unit has to be as broken as Vultures or Praetorians... If anything, those two units should be toned down, not everything else ratcheted up a notch.

Anyhow, forgive me if anyone already said this, but I'm on Page 1 right now and have to leave for a barbeque, so can't read the other four pages until tomorrow =)

What about Tanks? Can't they do collateral damage and kill things too? And Battleships?

I prefer the Redcoat, Really. If you're anywhere on par with the rest of the World, Redcoats with Pinch will put you over the top.

Whoops, forgot about tanks.

Perhaps I should say: the only unit that does collateral damage *and* can kill stuff before the industrial era.

Can I vote for BeserkSamurai, since you're allowing ImpiVulture?

Well I have to say Beserker has been very impressive. Ragnar with Financial can beeline to him much earlier than normal, and with the Aggressive trait the Beserker starts off effectively 20% stronger than vanilla macemen. Amphibious is also easy to leverage and you don't lose it when you upgrade to riflemen.

Finally, Beserker is draftable and you get Nationalism right before you get Rifling. Can you say Globe Theater?

Really, the end of the Praetorian era is the dawn of the Beserker era...

Samurai is also good, at least for the AI. Toku is a nightmare to go after once he gets his Feudalism/ Civil Service/ Rifling. Why would you want to attack into a city of 10 Riflemen, each with 5-6 promotions? Yikes. When he takes a city, you aren't really taking it back...

Cheers,

Dai

NO YOU CAN'T DAI. WHY DO YOU HAUNT ME SO!!!

Obviously, "best" is objective. Though depending on the circumstances, I'd say Landsknecht and Carrack.

So why does nobody think the Hwacha or Jaguar rock?

Samurai with togu, comes with strength 1, Drill 1, and its unique ability of 2 additional first strikes, with trebs these things cannot be stopped, even against charlemange and his uu, as he was defending his cities with them and i had my stacks covered with crossbowmen, my Samurai were able to defeat them easy once a few trebs had withdrawn, the great thing is when you upgrade them to rifles.. CR 3, Strength one, Drill one, with just 10xp spent :D, meaning as soon as you get to 17xp from victories you can pop pinch aswell incase enemies get city defende grenade people :D.

So take the Continent with Samurai, then the world with Riflemen

I find the Gallic swordsman pretty strong, gets to level 6 promotions no bother, and the Dun gets it halfway there anyhow

Finally put my vote - I voted for the Cho Ku No as I am playing the early game most often quitting, winning or losing before rifles.

So why does nobody think the Hwacha or Jaguar rock?
Don't know about Hwacha, but I can tell you why nobody votes for Jaguar:
They suck.
It's that simple. When you think, What UU do I want?, you don't end up thinking: "I've got it! A weak version of the swordsman with a woodsman promo!"

Just to play devil's advocate though, people like the weak version of the horse archer that Carthage has. The Numidians weaker 5 strength flanking spearman killing self is quite good. So just being weaker doesn't mean it necessarily sucks.

Since woodsman III promos I wouldn't consider the Jaguar a bad unique unit. And there are actually people who don't quit a game, when they don't have iron and copper near them :) Otherwise me and my friend(s) could never ever finish a game.

I'm all for Quechua. I know that Immortals are nice, but with Incan UU have great synergy with other features, so early protection right up to the barb axemen, You can steal workers, kill whole nations, and it's not getting obsolete really, because Combat one stays there. Some of Your unit will gladly get Woodsman II for movement and that unit is really close to Woodsman III, Medic unit.

I love them, the Incas. Best civilization :king:

Horse archers are bad enough as it is, but I suspect the Numidian UU has some kind of bonus - defense modifiers applied, or some flanking?
Plus, Mounted units damage siege in the stacks they attack. Jaguars doesn't.

Why is the Impi not given its own spot? I love that unit, you can use Shaka's Agg trait to promote them quickly, send horses, Impi and a worker into your enemies lands, build a fort and stock it with Impi. A horse killing unit that can catch the horses, it's brilliant.
Any, I voted for Impi (not vulture although that's alright) followed by Panzer (tank-killing is so good for so long) and then Oromo Warrior.

...I played LAN with a friends who got rushed in the start of the gunpowder age. He lost only a pair of cities although he only had a couple of Impis in each. Does this show us the good of Impis or the bad of AI tactics? Or both?

All of the above, plus the Jaguar is actually cheaper than vanilla Swordsmen. It's a zerging unit -- quantity over quality.

That said, I still voted for the Immortal. Persians with Horses can easily start the Classical age with two or three "capital" city sites to call their own....

I'm more or less a culture, religion and wonder whore in the early stages of the game. Therefore the Landsknecht fits my game style the best. It's a cheap counter against the two main unit classes and combined with the protectiv archery units no1 can enter my borders :).
And later in the game my culture will eat them up :D

The Holkan is an insane rush unit but I'm the only one who voted for it >.<
